FREDERICKSBURG RECREATION COMMISSION Minutes of October 17, 2013 The October meeting of the Fredericksburg Recreation Commission was held on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Maury Commons. The meeting was called to order at approximately 7:02 p.m. Present: Commissioners: George Foster, Marcus Tepaske, Matt Kelly and Susan Tyler. Absent: Timothy Duffy, Calvin Glover, Malvina Kay, Ken Kroko and Gary Olsen. Also in attendance: Robert Antozzi, Tiffany Capehart and Patricia Sparks. I. Approval of Minutes: The minutes of September 19, 2013 were unanimously approved. II. Public Comment: None. III. Communications from the Director: The Commissioners reviewed the following reports: Sports Report – September-October 2013 Leisure Report – October-November 2013 Follow-Up Report – October 2013 Letter from Ruzena Rok to Tiffany Capehart with response documentation from Tiffany – Tiffany Capehart discussed the concerns outlined in a letter from Ruzena Rok in regards to the 2013 Fredericksburg Art Show held at Riverfront Park on September 21st and 22nd. Tiffany addressed the concerns in an email to Ruzena Rok. Commissioner Tyler agreed that the concerns made by Ruzena Rok were valid, but also agreed that Tiffany had addressed each of the concerns very well. Tiffany also provided the Commissioners with an Event/Activity After Action Form that outlined; what worked well; areas for improvement and recommendations for next year. Also discussed was the City’s Business License Requirement. Commissioner Kelly stated that he would be discussing the business license issue with Council and the Commissioner of Revenue. IV. Noteworthy Dates: The Commissioners reviewed upcoming programs and trips. V. Old Business: A. Pathways – Dr. Antozzi stated that there was no new business. B. Riverfront Park – Dr. Antozzi reported that there have been two meetings with Rhodeside and Harwell in regards to developing the park. C. Idlewild Park – No new information to report. Take off agenda. 1 VI. New Business: A. 27th Annual Volunteer Awards Banquet Nominees – A motion was made by Commissioner Kelly, seconded by Commissioner Tyler and unanimously approved to honor the following volunteers at the 27th Annual Volunteer Awards Banquet. Sunshine Lady Foundation Contributor of the Year: WBQB 101.5 - $62.500 Sports Volunteer of the Year: N.D. Jones – 195 hours New Volunteer Coach of the Year: Tim Davis – 150 hours Alvin Staples Leisure Volunteer of the Year Award: Charles W. “Bill” Stanton Hall of Fame Award: Jeremy Williams Special Support Award: Guy J. Mussey Meritorious Service Awards: (500 hours or $5,000) N.D. Jones, Philip King, Guy Mussey with Master Gardeners Association of Virginia, James Nance, Rick Simpson, Todd Spangler, Bill Stanton, Chaplin Youth Center, Michael Wellman, Chick-fil-A, Ci Ci’s Pizza, Fredericksburg Academy, Fredericksburg Parent Magazine, Kilgore & Smith, Papa John’s Pizza, So Wise Art Distinguished Meritorious Service Award: (1,000 hours or $10,000) Fredericksburg Police Department, Valley Crest Landscape Maintenance, WBQB-B101.5 Golden Partnership Award: (2000 hours or $100,000) None Diamond Partnership Award: (4000 hours or $200,000) Star Radio Group Excellence in Service Award: (10 years of service then increments of 5) Wayne Washington (20 years), Stephanie Snellings (10 years) Eagle Scout Award: None 2 Recreation Commission Award: Dominion Power Parks and Recreation Staff Appreciation Award: Fredericksburg Safety Office Past Recreation Commissioners: None VII. Commission Concerns and Topics: Commissioner Tyler commented on the cars parked on the grass last weekend at the Wine Festival. Dr. Antozzi stated that they are currently assessing the damage. Commissioner Tyler also asked if the mildew on the front of the center could be removed. Dr. Antozzi stated that he would look into it. Commissioner Foster asked if we could get a snow fence placed on the narrow shoulder side where the parents stand on field #4 at Dixon near the Blue and Grey Parkway. It would prevent balls from going into the ditch. Dr. Antozzi stated that he would respond to him by email. Tiffany Capehart stated that she had received a phone call from the local Benjamin Moore Paint Store in regards to Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation receiving a donation from them of $800.00, plus paint and paint supplies. Benjamin Moore had an initiative this year that for every gallon of paint they sold they would donate a dollar to a charitable organization. She will be receiving a formal letter from them.
