Parks & Recreation Advisory Board

Advisory Board Agenda Monday, April 11, 2022 7:00 p.m. I. Call to Order at 7:05 pm. Quorum not present. Many Board members are out of Town due to Wake County Public Schools Spring Break. Director Cox recommended proceeding with an informal meeting to share information with attendees. Board/Staff members present: Jonathan Cox, Jason Wunsch, and Jerry O’Connell II. Pledge III. Public Comment Ron Nowcyk, Jo Ann Emery, Linda Brem, and Sherrill Stanley in attendance. No comments. IV. Community Center North – Exterior Facade Presentation / Selection (Cox) Presented two exterior options with corresponding components designed by H & H Architecture. Town Staff will recommend option 1 to the Board of Commissioners. Director Cox explained the process and benefits of the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR). Edifice will be the CMAR for this project. Other topics included schematic design, site design, parking, coordination with Wake County Public Schools, the importance of natural light within the building, and a general layout of the facility. V. Recreation Program Update – May-August 2022 Program Brochure (O’Connell) The new Program Brochure can be accessed online; hardcopies are available at the Community Center. Summer Camp enrollment opened this morning. Camp enrollment nearing capacity with 285 out of a possible 288 spots filled since 8 am. Provided a sampling of new programs that included STEM and coding programs/camps for youth and preschool, special events for teens, sports and beginner belly dance for adults. New Active Adult activities include day trips (4), a balance program, and socials (2) that will be held at the newly renovated clubhouse at Hilltop Needmore Town Park and Preserve. VI. Project Updates a. Hilltop Needmore Town Park & Preserve i. Community Center North (Cox) Topic covered during exterior facade presentation. ii. Former Clubhouse Redesign / Construction (Cox) Renovation 90 percent complete. Wake County will be using the clubhouse to conduct early voting from April 28 – May 14. The PRCRD will begin leasing the facility on July 1st for private parties/activities. Active Adult socials (2) scheduled for May and July. iii. HNTPP Master Plan (Cox) Contract awarded to CLH Design. Emphasized that this master plan is separate from the Community Center North Project. CLH and the Town will host numerous public engagement sessions. Jo Ann Emery asked about access to surveys for people who are not computer savvy. Director Cox mentioned  that post cards will be mailed to residents and paper copies will be available at Town facilities. Linda Brem asked about additional Pickleball courts. Director Cox mentioned that this could be a possibility and stressed the importance of participating in public input sessions. b. Hidden Valley Greenway Design The Town is working with Kimley-Horn and pursuing grant funding for this project. c. Alston Ridge Greenway Design The Town is working with Kimley-Horn and pursuing grant funding for this project. This greenway will connect Fuquay-Varina to Holy Springs. d. Action Park Dugouts This project is 95% complete. VII. PRCR Staff Updates (Cox) Beth Stephenson left the PRCRD after six years of service to pursue a different career. Appreciate her hard work and wish her well in her new endeavor. Consequently, the department will be looking to fill the vacant Recreation Superintendent position. Leslie Poole was recently promoted to Recreation Program Administrator. She will be running the day-to- day operations/programming at the Community Center. VIII. Upcoming Events (Cox) Mentioned the strong lineup for the spring concert series. a. FM2FV – April 21, 2022 – The Embers b. FM2FV – April 28, 2022 – Chairmen of the Board (Cox) This concert was rescheduled from April 7th due to inclement weather. c. FM2FV – May 12, 2022 – Liquid Pleasure IX. Next Meeting a.
