City of Galt MINUTES COMMISSION ON AGING 610 CHABOLLA AVENUE, GALT, CA Thursday, May 25, 2023 10:00 AM Chairperson: Andrea Johnson Vice Chair: Libby Robbins Commissioners: Bob Balliet, Phyllis Johnson, Bob Wilson 1. Call Meeting to Order 10:04am 2. Roll Call: Andrea Johnson (absent), Libby Robbins, Bob Balliet, Phyllis Johnson, Bob Wilson Advisor: Monica Lopez – Parks & Recreation. Guests: German Ayon (AAA/4), Antonio Galvan (resident), Mary Maaga (Sunshine Food Pantry), Elizabeth McDaniel (resident), Tara Wilson (GSRC) 3. Public Comment: Under Government Code Section 54954.3, members of the audience may address the Commission on any item of interest to the public or any agenda item before or during the Commission's consideration of the item. Speakers shall restrict their comments to issues that are within the subject matter authority of the Commission and limit comments to a maximum of five (5) minutes. Elizabeth McDaniel, Galt Place resident, shared with the Commission that changes that she had asked to have made in regards to management have not yet been made. 4. Acceptance of Minutes: Meeting of April 27, 2023. P. Johnson and B. Balliet move to approve minutes, 3 ayes (Wilson abstained) 5. Presentations: Sunshine Food Pantry (Faye Gaines, Mary Maaga) Pastor Mary presented on the Sunshine Food Closet and Affordable Housing. Housing – United Methodist Church is helping with this. Residents will never be charged more than 30% of their income. 1. F St across from convenience store, 2. Across from Brewsters, 7 3. UMC empty lots. This may be done by 2024. Food Closet - $25,000 raised, $250,000 possible grant money available. Looking into a modular building and hope to break ground later this year. Can purchase bricks for the brick memorial $100 ($87 goes to the construction costs). 6. New Business: A. Spaghetti Dinner BINGO Fundraiser Commissioner Balliet would like to see this happen in September. Looking for others to help. Maybe ask restaurants to help cook. Other Commissioners expressed concern on whether the Commission has time for this project or not. Commissioner P. Johnson suggested reaching out to La Familia and/or Meals on Wheels to help. Co Chair Robbins suggested that a committee be formed (Balliet seconded the motion, all in favor). This will be added to the July Agenda. B. Ordering laminating supplies for BINGO Co-Chair Robbins would like to be able to purchase laminating supplies for bingo (P. Johnson and Balliet moved to approve up to $75/year to be spent, with all approving) C. Ordering chairs for Senior Fitness Programs at Chabolla – Commissioner P. Johnson/Co-Chair Robbins moved to allow up to $400 to be spend on chairs (motion failed). Looking for other agencies to donate. 7. Old Business: A. Budget Review – $8,064.92 in the account as of the meeting date. B. Bus Trips for Seniors to Casinos Update – approximately 60 interested. Checking on buses to Red Hawk, checking with Sky River for options. C. Bingo Updates -65-70 attendees each week. Commissioner Wilson is hoping more volunteers will be cleared soon. Commissioner P. Johnson requested more bingo cards. Co-Chair Robbins would like to print labels to mark the cards to help prevent cheating. Commission voted to purchase more $25 gift cards for bingo blackout games. D. SWAG tabled until June. 8. Commissioners’ Reports: a. Chair A. Johnson: b. Vice Chair L. Robbins: Suggested that all Mondays at bingo be the day to celebrate birthdays of attendees. c. Commissioner B. Balliet:will be collaborating with the Chamber of Commerce president. The meeting should be in June. d. Commissioner P. Johnson: Brought pies to bingo in honor of Women’s Day e. Commissioner B. Wilson: has been meeting with the Chamber as a liaison 9.
