Meeting Minutes, March 6, 2017
A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Juliet Rodriguez, Youth Chair, called the meeting to order at
6:04P.M.
B. ROLL CALL:
Adult Mentors Present: Cross, Flores, Gordon, Lampson
Members Absent: L. Klotz (late)
Youth Members Present: Cuevas, Gamez, Hassey, O. Klotz, Miller, Munoz, Rodriguez, Sessions, Yebra
Members Absent: Muller
C. PUBLIC COMMENT: Council Member Lampson announced the Strawberry Festival will have an art
contest and will be awarding $300 in prizes. The deadline to submit is March 10th.
D. PRESENTATIONS: None
E. REGULAR BUSINESS:
1. Lessons of Leadership
Commissioner Klotz conducted an icebreaker where commissioners opened an envelope and had to guess
quotes from famous leaders.
2. Dia de Los Libros de Los Ninos
Chair Rodriguez overviewed the commission’s participation at last year’s event. This year’s event will be
held on April 29th from 10-2pm.
A motion was made to commit to the event.

3. Climate and Sports Student Summit
Adult Mentor Gordon provided information on a leadership summit happening at the Golden 1 Center on
June 27th and 28th. The summit would educate youth and motivate them through the power of sports to make
a sustainable difference on the planet. Commissioners Gamez, Klotz, Rodriguez, Yebra, Cuevas, and
Hassey expressed interest in attending. No action was taken.
4. College and Career Fair Reflection
Commissioner Miller shared that the college fair went very well. Adult Mentor Cross was excited with the
attendance of the fair, but disappointed by the lack of commissioner support after the commission voted to
support the event.
5. Youth Financial Literacy Workshop Update
Commissioner Hassey shared that she anticipates the workshop will happen in either April or May at Galt
High School. She is currently working with the school principal and teachers on the logistics.

6. GYC Recruitment
Adult Mentor Gordon presented a timeline for the recruitment process to select commissioners for next
year. The open application period will begin March 13th and close on April 13th with a formal announcement
at the May 1st meeting. There will be five seats available as Commissioner Hassey will be graduating high
school and Commissioners Rodriguez, Gamez, Miller and Yebra’s terms are up.
Commissioners Klotz, Hassey, Sessions and Cuevas expressed interest on serving on the interview panel.
7. Economic Development Survey Update
Adult Mentor Gordon shared that surveys were distributed to high school students at both high schools on
February 22nd. He reported that he received 902 survey with 655 from Liberty Ranch High School and 297
from Galt High School. The next steps will be inputting the data into an Excel spreadsheet.
8. Tiny Smiles Kid’s Run Reflection
Commissioners Gamez and Sessions felt the Juice it Up smoothies given to finishers were successful,
especially since they received donations to cover the cost. Foot traffic to their exhibit table, which provided
various resources to keep youth active, was slow. Overall, they were happy with the outcome.
6:56pm – Adult Mentor Klotz arrived.
9. Art Exhibit Update
Commissioner Rodriguez reported they are seeking to identify eight unsung heroes as part of the exhibit.
Also, the deadline was extended to continue to solicit art submissions.
10. Crafting with Santa Reflection
The report was tabled for the next meeting.
11. John Moran Scholarship/Eggstravaganza
A motion was made to offer three scholarships in the amount of $500 per scholarship.

A motion was made to approve a budget not to exceed $300 for the pancake breakfast.

12. City Council Update
Council Member Lampson shared about upcoming light improvement projects at Walker Park.
Additionally, she talked about city council discussions regarding the impacts of the passage of Proposition
64 which legalizes marijuana.
13. Editorial Board Update
Subcommittee members shared upcoming articles including an editorial on the dependency of
smartphones.
14. Approval of the minutes of January 9, 2017 and February 6, 2017
A motion was made to approve the January 9th minutes with amendments.

15. Treasurer’s Report
The Treasurer’s Report was tabled.
16. Galt Herald Newspaper Articles
Commissioner Cuevas reported on a February 22nd article highlighting fellow commissioner Rodriguez’s
art exhibit in Lodi. He chose this article to inspire others and remind them that anything is possible.
17. Future Agenda Items
Future agenda items include the February 6, 2017 minutes, Publicity Update and Financial Literacy
Workshop.

decide whether to participate.
