Meeting Minutes, April 3, 2017
Meeting held in City’s Community Room
A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Juliet Rodriguez, Youth Chair, called the meeting to
order at 6:08 P.M.
B. ROLL CALL:

Members Absent: Flores
Youth Members Present: Cuevas, Gamez, Hassey, O. Klotz, Muller, Munoz,
Rodriguez, Sessions
Members Absent: Miller, Yebra
C. PUBLIC COMMENT: None
D. PRESENTATIONS:
Derek Miller from Liberty Ranch High School’s National Honor Society shared that NHS
will be partnering with the Galt Police Department to put on the community bike safety
rodeo on May 6th from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Food Truck Mania on C Street. The event,
aimed at ages 5-12 year olds, will teach bike safety as well as raffle off 12 bikes and
helmets. He asked that the GYC fundraise, advertise and volunteer for this event.
Commissioners agreed to help publicize through their personal social media sites and
hand out fliers. Commissioners Cuevas, Rodriguez, Hassey, Sessions, Klotz, and Muller
agreed to individually volunteer at the event.
E. REGULAR BUSINESS:
1. Lessons of Leadership
Adult Mentor Klotz presented this month’s lessons from Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits
of Highly Effective People. These habits included:
1. Be proactive
2. Begin with the end in mind
3. Put first things first
4. Think win-win
5. Seek first to understand
6. Synergy
7. Sharpen your Saw

Adult Mentor Gordon asked the commission to support this Galt library event on April
28th from 10am-2pm. and help the kids make arts and crafts. A motion was made to
commit to the event and approve a budget of $100 for the purchase of craft supplies.

3. Youth Financial Literacy Workshop Update
Commissioner Hassey updated the commission that she spoke with the Galt High
Principal and District Director and is waiting on a response whether the workshop can be
held during school hours.
4. Art Exhibit
Chair Rodriguez shared that the art exhibit had a good turn out and the presentations went
well. She shared that the exhibit could have used more art and volunteers; a formal
budget will be presented at the next meeting. Adult mentor Klotz shared that students had
some trouble with the theme and didn't know how they affected the world. The time
period may have also been a busy time for students. She shared that the subcommittee
would need to write thank you notes to Access Sacramento for taping the whole event.
Commissioner Sessions shared her and Adult mentor Klotz’s experience at the Grant
Advisory Board for Youth (GABY) event. Organizations that were awarded grants from
GABY showcased their projects at the event.
5. Crafting with Santa Reflection
Commissioner Munoz shared that the crafting with Santa event went well. It was smaller
than in past years but this allowed the volunteers to interact with the kids more. Most of
the volunteers were from Galt High.
6. Eggstravaganza Pancake Breakfast Update
Adult Mentor Gordon provided an update on the Eggstravaganza event. It will be held at
the Chabolla center on April 8th from 7:00A.M. to 10A.M. Volunteers will be needed
from 6:15A.M. to 10:45A.M. Commissioners Hasey, Cuevas, Rodriguez, Klotz, Sessions
and Muller volunteered to help out. Adult Mentor Klotz reminded that two
commissioners will need to go to one of the Rotary and Lions club meetings to thank
Rotary for the sausage donation and Galt Lions for cooking breakfast at the event.
7. Publicity Report
Publicity Chair Cuevas shared that he spoke to Liberty Ranch High School AVID class
and Galt Writer’s club regarding recruitment. Additionally, he shared the John Moran
Scholarship with Galt Writers, AVID, National Honor’s Society and Key Club. He also
provided an update regarding the GYC website and working with the City Clerk to
include additional webpages.
8. Treasurer’s Report
A formal report will be provided at the next meeting.
Adult mentor Klotz presented receipts totaling $521.14 that were used for the art exhibit.
Commissioners reviewed the expenditures, which will be reimbursed through GABY
grant and GYC’s art exhibit budget approved at December 2017 meeting.
9. City Council Update
Council member Lampson informed the commission that the city is negotiating with
police officers to address compensation. The city has seen officers leave for higher
paying jobs elsewhere.
10. Editorial Board Update
Commissioner Munoz shared upcoming editorials in the Galt Herald. She will be
submitting an article about the Spring Fling at Galt High and how leadership affected her.
Commissioner Cuevas will submit one about the MESA Robotics Competition and
Commissioner Rodriguez will be submitting one about Clash of the Classes.
Commissioner Hassey also shared her editorial about choosing the military as a career
path, which ran in the March 31st edition
11. Galt Herald Newspaper
Commissioner Klotz shared the article “Palazzo Speaks On Signs of an Improving
Economy”. He spoke on how sales taxes and the economy have risen and retail
development. This is important to teens as they should be informed of development and
event happening in our community.
12. Strawberry Festival Fundraiser
Adult Mentor Gordon shared that the Galt Lions offered the second day of their bingo
booth at the Strawberry Festival on May 21st to the commission as a fundraiser. The
commission took action to commit to the event.

Commissioners Rodriguez and Muller volunteered to chair a subcommittee that will
decide on a budget, volunteer shifts, and what should be given out as a prize.
13. Approval of minutes for the meeting of February 6, 2017 and March 6, 2017
The minutes will be approved at the next meeting.
14. GYC Celebration
Chair Rodriguez presented considerations for the last GYC meeting which included
icebreakers, a slideshow, and scavenger hunt. Dinner will also be provided and options
from Dos Coyotes, Subway and DaVinci’s were provided. However, it was agreed to
look into local businesses such as Wholey Ravioli, El Rodeo, and Subway. A motion was
made to approve a budget not to exceed $200.

Chair Rodriguez and Vice Chair Klotz will further research and make a decision on food.

16. Around the Horn/Give your Gratitude
Gratitude was given to various individuals for their contributions at the art exhibit
including: Cal-Waste and Rotary for the cash award donations given to the Unsung
Heroes, Galt Herald Publisher David Herberger for serving as the master of ceremonies,
Adult Mentor Cross for getting Access Sacramento to cover the event, and Adult Mentor
Klotz for her work on the presentation and overall support of the event.
Additionally, Commissioner Sessions was recognized for stepping in at the last minute to
represent the GYC at the GABY Grant meeting and Adult Mentor Gordon for inputting
over 600 Economic Development Surveys into a database.
AJOURNMENT: Youth Chair J. Rodriguez adjourned the meeting at 7:28P.M.

Adult Mentor Gordon will present an opportunity to partner with the Galt Lion’s at the Strawberry
Festival.

RECOMMENDATION: Approve the minutes.

action on a selection and budget.
