CITY OF GALT GALT CITY COUNCIL YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes, October 2, 2017 Meeting held in City Council Chambers A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Jesus Cuevas, Youth Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Cross, Gordon, L. Klotz, Lampson Members Absent: Flores Youth Members Present: Cuevas, Franco, Celio Gonzalez, Cristian Gonzalez, O. Klotz, Muller, Rodriguez, Sessions, Trevizo, Yebra Members Absent: None 6:05pm – Adult Mentor Flores arrived. C. PUBLIC COMMENT: Steven Sharp recommended that the Galt Youth Commission apply for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp. He shared that it is a great program that develops leadership skills for juniors. D. PRESENTATIONS: Mark Clarkson, Deputy Public Works Director, shared that Commissioner Trevizo had mentioned a problem to him regarding the safety of Marengo Road. Commissioner Trevizo told him that since there was no sidewalk beside Marengo Road, students had to walk on the side of the road where bushes obscured the driver’s view of them. Clarkson reported that a work order was issued to trim the bushes back and make it safer for students. E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Ice Breaker - Kickstarter The Galt Youth Commission and adult mentors split into groups of four and worked together to draw a picture. 2. Lights on Afterschool Event Jennifer Collier asked the Galt Youth Commission to have a table at the Lights Afterschool Event on October 26, 2017 in order to educate the youth about the Galt Youth Commission and encourage them to apply. It was decided to participate in the event and Commissioners Celio Gonzalez, Cuevas, Franco, Sessions, Trevizo, and Yebra volunteered to attend the event. Adult Mentor Flores will serve as support. Community Project: “It Can Wait” Campaign Commissioner Yebra shared that she was the lead for Liberty Ranch High School and Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez was the lead for Galt High School for contacting the principals about the project. 6:30pm – Adult Mentor Gordon left meeting. 4. Community Project: Recycling Project Commissioner Klotz and Rodriguez shared that the subcommittee met and discussed combining the recycling project and art exhibit. They came up with the idea to promoting Trash on Your Back at the exhibit as well as incorporating recycling into the theme of the exhibit. 5. Community Project: Art Exhibit No formal reports were made. 6. Hurricane Relief Efforts Commissioner Muller shared her ideas to fundraise money for the victims of recent hurricanes. One idea suggested was asking participants of the art exhibit to donate their art to be auctioned off and the proceeds would go to the hurricane relief efforts. It was decided to take on the hurricane relief fundraising efforts as a project. Commissioners Franco, Muller, and Trevizo volunteered for the subcommittee. Moved: Rodriguez Second: Cuevas Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 7. Treasurer’s Report Commissioner Franco reviewed the funds in the Galt Youth Commission account. She shared that the Galt Youth Commission’s total balance is $2,106.95. 8. John Moran Scholarship Funding Commissioner Franco recommended the commission to put $500 aside for the John Moran Scholarship. A motion was made to save $500 for the John Moran Scholarship for a student from either high school. Moved: Muller Second: Trevizo Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 9. Community Project: Little Library Project Commissioner Rodriguez shared that the main goal of the Little Library project was to make reading more accessible. She shared that they planned to make five boxes and gift them to the community, but check on them once and a while to make sure they’re in good condition. A motion was made for the budget not to exceed $350 for five boxes and the assembly. Moved: Sessions Second: Trevizo Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 10. Community Project: Youth Career Fair Commissioner Cuevas shared that the Youth Career Fair would be on October 23, 2017 from 9am to 12pm. Everyone but Commissioner Muller committed to attending the Youth Career Fair. A motion was made for the budget not to exceed $50 for refreshments for the Youth Career Fair. Moved: Muller Second: Franco Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 11. Lessons of Leadership Adult Mentor Klotz related differences in foods to the differences in people. She shared that people may look different, but everyone is the same in the inside. 12. Approval of minutes for the meeting of September 11, 2017 A motion was made to approve the September 11, 2017 minutes with a revision to the Galt Youth Commission’s total balance from $4,920.84 to $1,920.84. Moved: Klotz Second: Cristian Gonzalez Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 13. Editorial Board Update Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez shared that the editorials for that month were about the shooting at Las Vegas, the ground-breaking ceremony at Liberty Ranch High School, and band. A previous article about freshmen vs senior views of school will also be run. Commissioner Yebra shared that future editorials will include end of the term and post homecoming. 14. Galt Herald Newspaper Tabled for next meeting. 15. City Council Update Council Member Lampson shared that Marylou Powers retired from mayor and they were accepting applications to appoint a position. She also shared that waste water rates were being raised and sidewalks were going to be put in near Liberty Ranch High School. 16. Future Agenda Items Economic Development Survey Results 17. Around the Horn/Give Your Gratitude Commissioner Gonzalez shared that the Galt Youth Commission’s Instagram followers had increased. Commissioner Rodriguez asked the chairs of projects to contact her if they needed to fundraise. Commissioner Klotz mentioned an article about the 90th celebration of Cal Waste and encouraged the commissioners to read it. Adult Mentor Flores commended the commissioners wearing the Galt Youth Commission shirts. Adult Mentor Cross expressed that she thought it was a good idea to combine the recycling and art exhibit projects. ADJOURNMENT: Youth Chair J. Cuevas adjourned the meeting at 8:00P.M.
