Meeting Minutes, August 6, 2018
Meeting held in City Community Room
A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: John Gordon, Adult Mentor, called the meeting to order at
6:00P.M.
B. ROLL CALL:
Adult Mentors Present: Collier, Cross, Flores, Gordon, Klotz, Lampson
Youth Members Present: Franco, Gonzalez, Martin, Ramos, Rivas, Rodriguez, Stalians, Yebra
Members Absent: Trevizo, Wilcox
C. PUBLIC COMMENT: None
D. PRESENTATIONS: None
E. REGULAR BUSINESS:
1. GYC Retreat Follow up: Maintaining Motivation
Adult Mentor Collier facilitated an activity to follow up on the youth commission retreat.
2. Ordinance, Bylaws, Brown Act Review
Adult Mentor Gordon reviewed a crossword puzzle with commissioners pertaining to the
ordinance, bylaws and Brown Act.
3. Officer Elections
Adult Mentors conducted the election of officers. Cristian Gonzalez ran unopposed for the Chair
position. Amanda Yebra ran unopposed for Fundraising Chair. The results of the Vice Chair,
Treasurer, and Publicity positions were tied at 4 to 4. The Commission decided to conduct
another election next month when nine commissioners are expected to be present. The
nomination period is closed and following candidates will prepare a speech for the election next
month:
The candidates for Vice Chair are Commissioners Ramos and Rodriguez.
The candidates for Secretary are Commissioners Rodriguez and Rivas.
The candidates for Treasurer are Commissioners Franco and Stalians.
The candidates for Publicity are Commissioners Martin and Franco.
Gavel was passed to newly elected chair Gonzalez and he conducted the meeting.
4. Approval of minutes for the meeting of July 2, 2018
The Commission took action to approve the minutes.

5. Treasurer’s Report
Adult Mentor Gordon presented an invoice from Gary’s Signs & Screen Printing of $162.21 for
the purchase of additional youth commission shirts. A formal Treasurer’s Report will be
presented at the next meeting.
6. National Night Out
Commissioners Rodriguez and Yebra reported out youth commission assignments to support
National Night Out.
7. Police Chief Youth Advisory Committee Update
Commissioners Martin and Ramos reported on the subcommittee’s meeting with Police Chief
Sockman. The Chief is looking to formulate an advisory committee of ten high school students
with diverse backgrounds with the intent of changing perceptions of law enforcement.
8. Kevin Tonn Fun Run Update
Adult Mentor Cross reported that 18 volunteers supported the Kevin Tonn Run. The race
organizers thanked us for our support.
9. Lessons in Leadership
Adult Mentor Klotz shared a YouTube video from Derek Sivers called “How to Start a
Movement.”
10. City Council Update
Council Member Lampson shared that new crosswalks were installed at the promenade as well
as a safety committee meeting was postponed.
11. Galt Herald Newspaper
Adult Mentor Flores shared an article called “From Galt to San Juan Unified School District” in
the August 1st edition of the Galt Herald. The article reported on former Galt High student
Steffanie Kramer who was a former foster child and currently a school community worker at San
Juan School District. Flores reported that the article highlighted the resilience of this former
student and the article reminded us to “keep your options open” and “it’s ok not to be ok.”
12. Galt Herald Editorials
Adult Mentor Gordon shared that the Galt Herald is interested in continuing publishing youth
editorials. Commissioners Gonzalez, Franco, Martin, Rivas and Yebra expressed interest in
participating in a subcommittee.
13. Community Projects for 2018-19
The youth commission briefly discussed possible project ideas. They included: bringing AT&T’s
“It Can Wait” campaign to Liberty Ranch High School, addressing the homelessness issues in
Galt, connecting local and high schools community service organizations together, participating
in a senior citizen Thanksgiving dinner and considering a possible theme for an art exhibit.
Commissioners were assigned to bring one idea for a community project at the next meeting for
consideration and adoption.
14. September Galt Youth Commission Meeting
The Commission took action to move the September meeting date to September 10th.

16. Around the Horn/Give Your Gratitude
Adult Mentor Gordon reported that commissioner Wilcox has resigned. Gordon will work with
the City Clerk’s office on next steps. Adult Mentor Cross shared that Galt Senior Club is putting
on a spaghetti dinner on September 15th and asked for volunteers. The dinner provides
scholarships to high school seniors.
ADJOURNMENT: Chair Gonzalez adjourned the meeting at 8:18 P.M.
