CITY OF GALT GALT CITY COUNCIL YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes, October 1, 2018 Meeting held in City Hall Chambers A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Chair Gonzalez called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Collier, Cross, Flores, Gordon, Klotz Adult Mentors Absent: Lampson Youth Members Present: Franco, Gonzalez, Ramos, Rivas, Yebra Youth Members Absent: Martin, Rodriguez, Stalians, Trevizo C. PRESENTATIONS: Tina Hubert from the City Clerk’s Office swears in the new commissioner Carolina Cuevas at the start of the meeting. Robin Nelson came to say thank you for helping with the Kevin Tonn Memorial Run and presented the commission with a $700 dollar donation. The commission was also informed that further events dealing with the Kevin Tonn Run will be turned over to Jackie Garcia. D. PUBLIC COMMENT: TJ Guidotti, representing the Galt Police Department, informed the commission that the start of the Police Chief’s Advisory Committee will be postponed. He anticipates the Chief will start back up in two months. E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Approval of minutes for the meeting of September 10, 2018 The Commission took action to approve and amend the minutes. Moved: M. Franco Second: A. Yebra Ayes: 6 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 2. Treasurer’s Report Commissioner Franco reviewed the funds in the GYC account. The new total balance remains the same as last month though it will be adjusted to reflect the addition of the donation from the Kevin Tonn Run. 3. City Council Update No update due to Councilmember Lampson’s absence.  4. Lights on Afterschool Event Crystal Vallejo, ASES Coordinator at Galt JUESD, overviewed the event and requested support from the commission. Lights on Afterschool is an event that celebrates the various programs available to students afterschool. Vallejo requested that the GYC help by having a face painting booth. The event will take place Thursday, October 25th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Greer Elementary School. A motion was made to support the event. Moved: A. Yebra Second: D. Franco Ayes: 6 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 5. Icebreaker The Commission played a game called Ninja to take a short break throughout the meeting. 6. Community Project: It Can Wait Campaign Commissioner Yebra provided an update on this idea saying that she met with Liberty Ranch High School Principal Joe Saramago, who expressed that he did not want an assembly to take place for this event. Commissioner Yebra will be exploring potential lunchtime activities to promote this campaign. 7. Community Project: Random Acts Of Kindness Commissioner Yebra presented this idea on behalf of Commissioner Rodriguez. This event would be done by a subcommittee and some of the activities would consist of making care packages and a book drive. This event would happen during a week in February. Commissioner Stalians had arrived at 6:30pm. 8. Community Project: Supporting People in Need Commissioner Ramos provided an overview of this idea on supporting more students with low-incomes. Her idea is to help students at Greer and Valley Oaks Elementary Schools by creating certain partnerships to help more kids with activities after school. Anyone who is interested on helping the students out is more than welcome to come and help do projects for kids. She mentioned that the rummage sale could help fund this endeavor. 9. Community Project: Health/Fitness Seminar Commissioner Stalians provided an overview on this idea of a Health and Fitness seminar. This event would be a one-time event geared toward the youth to share the importance of health and fitness. He is considering approaching the two local gyms to see if they’re interested in hosting. 10. Community Project: 40’s Band Event Commissioner Rivas provided an overview on this idea of wanting to combine different age groups together through a dance. This event would take place at the Estrellita Ballroom possibly on March 23, 2019. Rivas proposed a budget of $3,600 and the cost of  admission would be $20 per ticket. She would look into partnerships and the GABY grant to offset the cost. 11. Community Project: Helping Adults with Technology Commissioner Franco presented this idea on behalf of Commissioner Martin. This activity would help seniors with using their phones or tablets. Martin researched a similar project in Modesto and felt that the cost would be very little to run. She figured teens could assist about once a week at the Galt Library. This event would be great to form bonds with different age groups and to learn more from each other. Martin would need to see if senior groups are interested in this type of activity. 12. Community Project: Helping Adults with English Commissioner Gonzalez provided an overview on this idea of wanting to help adults learn English. It is a great way for parents or adults to learn and expand their vocabulary and literacy. People who are interested in helping would need to be fluent in Spanish to be able to help others. Gonzalez approached high school students about volunteering and will be contacting Spanish speaking families to see if there is a need to provide this service. 13. Community Project: Rummage Sale Commissioner Franco presented this idea on behalf of Commissioner Trevizo. This Rummage sale would be a good way to fund and the profits can go to a non- profit organization if possible or other community projects. There is still some decision making being made on when this event can take place. Commissioner Trevizo offered his own home as a location or they could try to have a more recognizable location with visibility. There will also be the procedure of contacting different people and places for donations. 14. Decision(s) Making - Community Projects After receiving feedback from the adult mentors and commissioners no decision was made to adopt any of the projects for the 2018/19 year. The commissioners will need to conduct further research and go more in depth with the outcomes of their projects. A decision will be made at the next meeting. 15. Galt Herald Newspaper No update due to Commissioner Trevizo’s absence. 16. Galt Herald Editorial Articles Subcommittee members reported on upcoming editorial topics. Commissioner Yebra will work on a voting article that is happening at Galt High. Commissioners Yebra and Rivas will work on a Halloween article. Commissioner Gonzalez will work on an art article and Commissioner Franco will work on the Man on the Street article. F. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS Inviting Jackie Garcia to next month’s meeting. G. AROUND THE HORN GIVE YOUR GRATITUDE On October 3-4th, voting will be happening in the Galt High Auditorium. There was gratitude for the commissioners for the various conversations and feedback given to each of the community project presentations.
