City of Galt MINUTES COMMISSION ON AGING GALT PARKS & RECREATION OFFICE CONFERENCE ROOM 610 CHABOLLA AVENUE, GALT, CA Thursday, Sep 27, 2018 10:00am Chairperson: Bob Balliet Commission: Alvin Roberts – Vice Chair, Marie Hall, Andrea Johnson, Pennie Niemeyer 1. Call Meeting to Order 2. Roll Call: B. Balliet, A. Roberts (absent-excused), M. Hall (absent-excused), A. Johnson, P Niemeyer Advisor: M. Lopez Guests – Pat McCormick, Helen Johnson, Ruth, Sylvia Jimenez, Harlan 3. Public Comment: Under Government Code Section 54954.3, members of the audience may address the Commission on any item of interest to the public or any agenda item before or during the Commission’s consideration of the item. Speakers shall restrict their comments to issues that are within the subject matter jurisdiction of the Commission and limit comments to a maximum of five (5) minutes. Helen Johnson shared that she is aware of a program in San Jose called “Outreach” that helps with transportation with seniors. She will reach out to them to get information to share with the Commission. Harlan – Comfry has been working on the landscaping and that now means the residents can no longer plan their own stuff. He shared the letter that management gave to each resident regarding this. 4. Acceptance of Minutes: Aug 23, 2018 meeting. (1st Johnson, 2nd Niemeyer) Minutes approved unanimously. 5. Guest Speaker: Ms Sondra Mattingly – Senior Volunteer Services of Sacramento County Ms. Mattingly was unable to attend. She will speak at the October meeting. Ms. Helen Johnson, who volunteered to be this month’s Guest Speaker, in lieu of Ms Mattingly, told us that she is working on a new business that will offer Placement and Resource Assistance to seniors. Ms. Johnson’s business will be a non-profit and she will also donate time each month to help seniors. 6. Old Business A. Establishing a Senior Resources Center in Galt - (Bob) Update – (1) Results of meeting with City Officials scheduled on Aug 30, 2018 – timeline order of activity for the establishment of the Center, etc…Bob met with the Mayor, City Manager, and Armando Solis to discuss the creation of a Senior Resource Center. The City will provide a room in the Chabolla Community Center (currently MOW and P&R storage room). The City Manager will add the Center to the next budget and the Mayor is contributing $1,000 to the Center. Bob will be working on soliciting money from local businesses. Andrea suggested contacting local contractors to help if any construction is needed. Mr. Solis will provide bins for the Senior Club to store their items that are currently in the storage room. Bob wants the doors to the cabinets to be replaced to look more professional. (2) Announcement seeking volunteers postponed until after Resource Center is discussed by the City Council with Commission Input, etc… B. Senior Health Information Fair – Alvin/Bob update Alvin was absent. Pennie would like to see the Commission providing something quarterly for the seniors to attend. October 9th – Lodi is having a fair. C. Wheel Chair Access – (Bob) Update Ongoing. Bob has not heard from City. 7. New Business (1) Establishing a Senior Resources Center in Galt - (Bob) Update – Meeting with Pres of Senior Club - Bob thanked Armando Solis and Monica Lopez for their help. Bob also thanked Pat McCormick, Pres of Senior Club for her cooperation. (2) Senior Resource Calendars for 2019 – (Bob) Invite changes from Commissioners. 8. COMMISSIONERS REPORTS Andrea – Shawn Farmer informed her that the Commission on Aging is his favorite group. The Commission will invite him to attend an upcoming meeting. Bob – Bob is concerned with the offramp from 99 at Pringle. It is littered with garbage. He emailed CalTrans and they fixed fences that were down, but did not pick up the trash. Lincoln Way has trash also, but the City is addressing this. Pennie – After discussing the need for transportation for Seniors’ to medical appointments within the City of Galt, Pennie volunteered to contact the transit district to seek out possibilities for e.g. handicapped & elderly persons to have dial a ride transport to and from Dr appointments & will give report her findings at Oct meeting. 9. Announcements: a. Sacramento County Adult & Aging Commission Meeting is the fourth Wednesday of each month. (www.sacramentoadultandaging.org/meetings.html) b. Galt Senior Club – 1pm Chabolla Center, 1st Monday business meeting/bingo, 2nd bingo, 3rd pot luck/bingo, 4th Birthday Cake/bingo, 5th donuts/bingo & every Thursday 12:45 – 2:45 Bingo. c. Community Housing & Services Coalition Meeting – 4th Tuesday each month (Oct 25, 2016) location/time – 7000 65th St., Sacramento (Sac Sheriffs Florin Office Community Center). 10. ADJOURNMENT: Andrea Johnson made motion to adjourn, seconded by Pennie no objections were noted and the meeting was adjourned at 11:00 AM.
