CITY OF GALT GALT YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES CITY COUNCIL MEETING ROOM, 380 CIVIC DRIVE GALT, CALIFORNIA MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2023, 6:30PM Mission Statement - Encourage the youth to participate in activities that are purposeful in building better citizens. - Stimulate community service in Galt - Encourage family participation in building civic unity. - Strive to emphasize the diversity in our culture by encouraging interaction within the community. - Collaborate with organizations devoted to the growth of youth - Recognize that it takes all members of the community to sustain change for the betterment of our youth and families. A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER/FLAG SALUTE: Chair Kaur called the meeting to order at 6:33. B. ROLL CALL: Youth Commissioners present: Akers, Brixey, Bulahan, Caron, Murillo Cuevas, Cullers, Gold, Kaur, Jones, Lallian Mentors present: Paige Lampson, Jessica Goerzen; Mentor at Large: City Manager Lorenzo Hines, Jr.; City Council Representative: Mayor Jay Vandenburg C. PUBLIC COMMENT: None D. PRESENTATION(S): None E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Icebreaker Information Item Mayor Jay Vandurberg and Mentor Goerzen and the Commissioners took turns introducing themselves. 2. Minutes from December 6, 2022 Action Item Commissioners reviewed and approved the minutes from the December meeting. Motioned by Kaur, seconded by Caron. Motion passed, 10-0. 3. Community Career Fair and Fashion Show Discussion Action Item Tracie Cross was absent; however, the commission discussed and reviewed plans for the subcommittee to meet. 4. Partnering with Commission on Aging Information Item Commissioners Kaur, Brixey, and Cullers participated in the blanket drive alongside former Mayor Farmer and shared their positive experiences. Marengo Ranch Elementary fifth and sixth graders made cards for senior citizens. The mention of participating in the event in the future with the addition of mitten, hat, and scarf donations was suggested and discussed. 5. Escape Room Information Item Participants shared various lessons learned from the event, successes, and difficulties they faced while working as a team, and the overall enjoyment of the event. 6. Treasurer Report Information Item Commissioner Caron presented current funds with print outs from the City Clerk. The Galt Youth Commission currently has $9,486.99 accessible. 7. Projects for the year updates Information Item Activities for the year were reported on. • Animal service-Akers/Kaur: Human Connections agreed to allow dog walks on Saturdays. Updates were also provided on community service opportunities. • Random Acts of Kindness-Gold: There have been communications regarding planning and budgeting for Random Acts of Kindness. Ideas included purchasing sweets for school staff, leaving positive notes in public places, writing positive chalk messages, giving back to special needs teachers, shouting out sports coaches, etc. • Zip lining-March: Discussions took place regarding dates. It was decided a survey would be created to help determine when the event would take place. 8. Scholarship Committee Action Item Subcommittee members; Mentor Lampson and Commissioners Cullers and Murillo Cuevas, recommended 2 $500 scholarships from Galt High School, Liberty Ranch High School, and/or Estrellita High School. Motion made by Cullers, seconded by Jones. Motion passed, 10-0. 9. Commission Handbook Review Information Item City Manager Hines presented various excerpts from the City Commissions and Committee Handbook. The Commissioners and City Manager Hines discussed future plans regarding the city and the role of the Galt Youth Commission. 10. City Council Update Information Item Mayor Vandenberg presented this month’s update regarding the future of market property, cannabis discussions, Measure Q assisting Walker Park, homelessness issues, economic development, and more. 11. Future City Events Information Item The Commission discussed participating in the Easter Eggstravaganza and collecting donations. Ideas were also formulated on future action related to the unhoused in the city. 12. Around the Horn Information Item Commissioners and mentors shared thankfulness and good thoughts. 13. Future Agenda Items Information Item - Homelessness action discussions - Bringing law enforcement in for public comment / information / perspective - Easter Eggstraganza planning and donations - General Survey for High Schools - Galt Youth Commission application process for 2023-24. Icebreaker Information Item Introducing Mayor Jay Vandenburg as City Council representative. 2. Minutes from December 6, 2022 Action Item Commissioners will review and approve the minutes from the Dec. meeting. 3. Community Career fair and fashion show Discussion/Action Item Traci Cross will discuss and finalize the Commission participation. 4. Partnering with Commission on Aging Information Item Attendees will report out on blanket distribution. 5. Escape Room Information Item Participants will share lessons learned from the event and success and difficulties working as a team to escape.
