CITY OF GALT GALT YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES CITY COUNCIL MEETING ROOM, 380 CIVIC DRIVE GALT, CALIFORNIA MONDAY, APRIL 3, 2023, 6:30PM Mission Statement - Encourage the youth to participate in activities that are purposeful in building better citizens. - Stimulate community service in Galt. - Encourage family participation in building civic unity. - Strive to emphasize the diversity in our culture by encouraging interaction within the community. - Collaborate with organizations devoted to the growth of youth. - Recognize that it takes all members of the community to sustain change for the betterment of our youth and families. A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER/FLAG SALUTE: Chair Kaur called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM. B. ROLL CALL: Youth Commissioners present: Akers, Bulahan, Caron, Murillo Cuevas, Cullers (Zoom), Kaur, Jones, Lallian Youth Commissioners absent: Brixey, Gold Mentors present: Paige Lampson, Jessica Goerzen, Alan King; City Council Representative: Mayor Jay Vandenburg C. PUBLIC COMMENT: The A-Z Foundation thanked the Commission for their help and service in the Veteran Dinner held on April 1st and donated $2,000 to the funds. D. PRESENTATION(S): 1. Officer Selvy presented information about the condition of the unhoused in Galt and the Sacramento region, and the work the police department has done in relation to the issue. The Commission discussed various topics including shelters, services, and efforts with Officer Selvy to determine a scope of authority and action possibilities. E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Icebreaker Information Item Mayor Jay Vandenburg shared a vital life lesson to the Commission through a triangle with points titled “Sleep”, “Fun”, and “Good grades”. 2. Minutes from March 6, 2023 Action Item Commissioners reviewed and approved the minutes from the March meeting with the correction of “3th” changed to “3rd” under Agenda Item 7. Motion made by Akers, seconded by Jones. Motion passed, 7-0. 3. Community Career Fair and Fashion Show Discussion/Action Item Commissioners Kaur and Bulahan provided an update on the upcoming Community Career Fair and Fashion Show. They reported the planning is going well, and the Commissioners hope for a successful event. 4. Out with the old, in with the new Action Item The Commission discussed and voted on Pastosa and a budget of $250 for the last meeting of the year with the new and outgoing commissioners. Motion made by Bulahan, seconded by Caron. Motion passed, 7-0. 5. Recruitment for 2023-2024 school year Discussion Item The applications for the upcoming term are available to the high schools and middle schools in Galt. The commissioners and mentors alike were urged and assigned to spread the word and applications. 6. Treasurer Report Information Item Commissioner Caron presented there were no current changes in the funds. A total of $9,486.99 is accessible. 7. Projects for the year updates _ Information Item Activities for the year were reported on. • Animal service-Akers/Kaur; No new information. • Zip lining- Scheduled during summer. 8. General survey for high school Information/ Action Item Commissioner Lallian provided an update on the General Survey and expressed hopes of gaining authorization from City Manager Hines to extend the survey to the high schools in Galt. 9. City Council Update Information Item Mayor Vandenberg presented information and updates on ARPA funds and the Saturday markets in Galt. 10. Council Appearance Information Item Tabled due to the physical absence of Commissioner Cullers. 11. Eggstravaganza fundraiser Information Item Commissioners reported on the success of the event. Plans to make thank you cards for the businesses who donated were made. Commissioners reflected on ideas for next year in order to improve. Ideas included bringing application handouts and taping winning raffle tickets to the baskets. 12. Around the Horn Information Item Commissioners and mentors went around and shared thankfulness, good thoughts, and more. 13. PRESENTATION(S) Homeless presentation from police personnel. E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Icebreaker Information Item Mayor Jay Vandenburg will provide. 2. Minutes from March 6, 2023 Action Item Commissioners will review and approve the minutes from the March meeting. 3. Community Career fair and fashion show Discussion/Action Item Sub Committee report 4. Out with old, in with new. Action Item Vote on food for last meeting of year with new and outgoing commissioners. 5. Recruitment for 2023-2024 school year Discussion Item Applications are out.
