Galt Parks & Recreation Department, 610 Chabolla Avenue  Parks and Recreation Meeting Date: May 14, 2025 Commission Agenda Report FROM: ARAMNDO SOLIS, PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR SUBJECT: NAMING OF PARKS RECOMMENDATION The Parks and Recreation Commission 1) to review the list of names submitted to the Parks and Recreation Department; 2) evaluate that it meets the policy criteria; and 3) provide recommendation to the City Council on the naming of parks. BACKGROUND On June 20, 1995, the City Council established a policy for the naming of City Parks and buildings. I. OBJECTIVE A. To establish a uniform policy and procedure regarding the naming of parks and buildings. B. To facilitate the prompt naming of such facilities so they will be readily identified and will reflect on the history and geography of our local community. C. To encourage public participation in the naming of such facilities, and as well the dedication of land or funds by individuals or groups for public use who wish to perpetuate a name of their choice. II. POLICY A. Neighborhood parks adjacent to public schools shall be named similarly. B. Neighborhood parks not adjacent to schools, major parks, recreation facilities and buildings, may be named for the following. 1. Geographic features, such as: adjacent streets, neighborhoods, plants or trees, etc. 2. Events or persons of historical significance. 3. Individuals or organizations of local significance bearing a relationship to the City of Galt or its parks and recreation system. Generally, this relationship is noted by outstanding and unusual contributions to the community in terms of leadership, involvement, or substantial and significant donations of land and/or funds. AGENDA REPORT- NAMING OF CITY PARKS DISCUSSION With the construction of the Liberty Ranch and Elliott subdivisions underway, there will be four new parks added to the City of Galt’s parks system. The City Manager has directed the Parks and Recreation Director to solicit names for these parks using the policy set forth by the resolution 95-91 Naming of Parks. City staff solicited names from the public through its social media pages (Instagram, Facebook and Nextdoor), the City’s newsletter and an article was in the Galt Herald. The City received thirty-seven (37) submissions through these efforts and one (1) from the developer of the property, Elliot Homes. There are nominations for Officer Tonn and Officer Grewal within the 37 submissions. The City has already dedicated the Officer Grewal Parkway that will run through the Liberty Ranch subdivision and the Officer Tonn Blvd that runs through the Elliott subdivision once completed. Although it does not prohibit a park to be named after them, there are plans to honor these two fallen officers. There are also nominations for Barbara Payne. The Barbara Payne Community Garden has been named after her. Again, it does not prohibit another park to be named after her, but there is already a facility in her name. FISCAL ANALYSIS There is no fiscal impact by providing a recommendation to City Council. ALTERNATIVE The Commission can reject all submissions and recommend that the City Council reopen submission.
