CITY OF GALT GALT CITY COUNCIL YOUTH COMMISSION Special Meeting Minutes, September 11, 2017 Meeting held in City Council Chambers A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Jesus Cuevas, Youth Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Cross, Flores, Gordon, L. Klotz Members Absent: Lampson Youth Members Present: Cuevas, Franco, Celio Gonzalez, Cristian Gonzalez, O. Klotz, Muller, Rodriguez, Sessions, Trevizo, Yebra Members Absent: None C. PUBLIC COMMENT: None D. PRESENTATIONS: Robin Nelson thanked the Galt Youth Commission for their participation at the 2017 Kevin Tonn Memorial Run. She shared that they were donating $485 to the Galt Youth Commission and hoped that the Galt Youth Commission would participate in the 2018 Kevin Tonn Memorial run next year. E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Ice Breaker - Kickstarter Adult Mentor Klotz started off the meeting with an icebreaker called either or. She asked the commissioners and fellow adult mentors questions. They had to choose their answer and then a poll was taken with raised hands on the rest of the commission’s preferences. 2. Community Project: “It Can Wait” Campaign Commissioner Yebra shared she met with Adult Mentor Gordon and Alice Perez from AT & T on September 8, 2017 to collaborate on ideas of the youth commission working together to bring awareness to texting and driving. AT & T currently has a public awareness campaign called “It Can Wait” that includes presenting at high schools on distracted driving, show videos depicting the consequences, and give the students a chance to experience it themselves through virtual reality devices. The tentative date would be in April 2018 during California Teen Safety Week. Two to three volunteers were needed from each school to help run the sessions. Alice Perez shared some distracted driving statistics with the commission and showed a video from their campaign. 3. Community Project: Youth Career Fair Anita Radosevich and Martha Holiday shared about a meeting on September 8 with Commissioners Cuevas and Rodriguez and Adult Mentors Gordon and Cross to discuss a “career path” program they are launching that would inform youth on various career opportunities. They asked the youth commission to attend the first workshop and to bring a friend or two to test out the program and give them feedback. The tentative date for is October 23 or 24. There would be no cost to participate. 4. Community Project: Recycling Project No formal reports were made. 5. Community Project: Little Library Project Commissioner Rodriguez talked about how the purpose of the little library project was to make books more easily accessible and to create more interest in reading. She envisioned constructing five little library boxes and placing them at homes or businesses. After locations were established, she suggested holding a book drive in order to obtain books for the libraries. 6. Community Projects for 2017-18 Chair Cuevas asked if there were any more projects to consider. Adult Mentor Klotz shared that teachers from the high school had expressed interest in another art exhibit for 2018. Chair Cuevas then facilitated a discussion to determine which community projects to adopt. Art Exhibit - It was decided to form a subcommittee to discuss the details of the art exhibit. The subcommittee’s chairs are Commissioners Celio Gonzalez and Klotz. Adult Mentor Klotz would serve as support. “It Can Wait Campaign” - The Galt Youth Commission decided to make the “It Can Wait” campaign one of their projects. Moved: Muller Second: Rodriguez Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 Commissioners Franco, Celio Gonalez, Cristian Gonzalez, and Sessions volunteered to help with the sessions at Galt High School. Commissioners Klotz, Muller, Rodriguez, Trevizo, and Yebra volunteered to help with the sessions at Liberty Ranch High School. Adult mentor Gordon will serve as support. Youth Career Fair – The Galt Youth Commission decided to attend the career path workshop. Moved: Rodriguez Second: O. Klotz Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 The commission will determine the date and logistics with Adult Mentor Cross providing support. Commissioner Sessions stated she can only attend October 24. Little Library Project - It was decided more information was needed before taking action. A subcommittee consisting of Commissioners Cuevas, Franco, Celio Gonzalez, Muller, Rodriguez, Trevizo, and Yebra will research cost, identify potential partners and present at the next meeting. Adult Mentor Gordon would serve as support. Recycling Project - It was decided more information was needed before taking action. One consideration would have recycling serve as the theme for the art exhibit. A subcommittee consisting of Commissioners Cristian Gonzalez, Klotz, Muller, and Rodriguez will research and present at the next meeting. Adult Mentor Klotz would serve as support. 7. Lessons of Leadership Adult Mentor Klotz presented the leadership lesson on Colin Powell who was a general and an American statesman. She shared with the commissioners the thirteen rules by Colin Powell. 8. September 11 Remembrance Commissioner Trevizo shared the story of September 11 to help remember the people that lost their lives in the terrorist attack. He urged the commissioners to always honor September 11 and remember what it means. Commissioners observed a moment in silence. 9. Publicity Update Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez talked about his goals for publicity chair. His goals are to raise followers on the Galt Youth Commission’s social media platforms, keep the website updated, inform clubs and groups when we need volunteers for events, promote major events in the Galt Herald and social media, involve clubs and both high schools, and help with the recruiting process at the schools and spread the information. 10. Treasurer’s Report Commissioner Franco reviewed the funds in the Galt Youth Commission account. She shared that the Galt Youth Commission’s total balance is $4,920.84. She also suggested setting $500 from the general fund aside for the John Moran scholarship. This will be discussed next meeting. 11. Approval of minutes for the meeting of August 7, 2017 A motion was made to approve the minutes of August 7, 2017. Moved: O. Klotz Second: Sessions Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 12. Editorial Board Update Commissioner Yebra shared the Galt Youth Commission will continue its partnership with the Galt Herald to write editorials this year. Upcoming editorials expected to appear in the September 27th edition of the Galt Herald include: homecoming planning, freshman vs senior views of high school, the balance between school, sports, and extracurricular activities, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and a student profile on Steven Sharp. Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez shared possible future editorial ideas. 13. City Council Update Passed due to lack of representation. 14. Galt Herald Newspaper Commissioner Sessions presented the September 6th article entitled “Galt home building going strong, about to get stronger.” Sessions summarized the various home construction projects upcoming. She felt the housing developments would have a direct impact on youth in terms of increased enrollment at schools as well as more traffic affecting safety. 15. Future Agenda Items Future agenda items include the Economic Development Survey. 16. Around the Horn/Give Your Gratitude Commissioner Trevizo suggested attempting to get sidewalks placed along Marengo Road due to the dangers of walking on the side of the road. Commissioner Muller offered to come up with hurricane fundraising ideas to help the hurricane victims and present it at the next meeting. Adult Mentor Cross brought up the opportunity for juniors of the youth commission to apply for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp. ADJOURNMENT: Youth Chair J.
