Fourth of July Committee

Glendale, Wisconsin 53209 Present: Jenna Kunde Ann Deuser Eric Zentner Mary Lynn Cinealis Jessica Ballweg Marty Hersh Bryan Kennedy Steve Schmelzling The meeting was called to order with the Pledge of Allegiance. We discussed who is still on the committee and who is not: Ann Markuson, Sarah Acker, Bobbie Hughes, and Robin Benedon either didn’t reply to Bryan’s email asking if they are returning, or said they’re not returning. Bryan is going to: • Follow up with Sarah and Bobbie to see if they are returning • Contact the Glendale/River Hills PTO (he wants to go to a meeting with Steve) to recruit someone to run the Children’s Parade • Contact the Nicolet athletic department to recruit someone to run games/sports • Contact the Bavarian (with Ann D.) to see if someone from there would like to join the committee Mary Lynn said we need to figure out what needs to be cut because we don’t have enough people. Bryan said we can usually get people to volunteer for day-of. Jenna suggested asking the Lion’s Club to see if they would like to take over the daytime games, activities and bands. Bryan said he’s going to their event on Saturday and will ask them. Quickly booking a nighttime band is a priority. Bryan thought we could still ask Sarah to help even if she’s not on the committee. Jessica said Shawn could still help identify and contact bands. Ann is going to a band event for people who hire bands. Last year’s nighttime band cost $3,250 with lights, sound all day, and the band. We will look for bands in that price range. Ann mentioned that we should look at the band’s social media presence, marketing, etc. Bands that do this well draw a larger audience. Steve said he will send out a Survey Monkey to ask people their opinion of specific bands. Please send band ideas (and links to sound clips if you can find them) to Steve by December 10. Marty asked what our budget is. We never got the numbers from last year. Jessica said all the vendors paid. Ann said all the sponsors paid. Jessica doesn’t know if there was a surplus in 2019, but she knows we stayed within budget. We typically raise $22,000 and get $20,000 from the City of Glendale and spend all. Roles: Chairperson - ? It included: ATM at park on day of Videotaping the talent show (and charging $5-7 for copies) All tables should have a tent (Those present thought vendors should bring their own. Some have their own but use ours. Eric mentioned our quantities and volunteers to set them up and take them down are limited. Steve suggested we could charge for them.) rd July 3 pizza order quantity was just right Make sure we specify how much water we need for the musicians; we were short this year. Mary Lynn asked if we should still do the Talent Show. Jenna said not unless we have a coordinator who runs it, and Steve agreed. Bryan said we could have it for a few years, then not for a few years and alternate. We could use that money for an afternoon band instead. Jenna suggested the sound guy who did sound for the Talent Show could be doing the sound for alternate entertainment. Ann said we usually get bands who have their own sound person. Ann said she could put out a request for volunteers. We need a Talent Show coordinator by December 31st, or we won’t have a Talent Show. Jenna asked about advertising on Next door. Bryan said he would do this. Ann observed that this year 4th of July attendance was great at the beginning (right after the parade) but a lot of people left, because there was not enough food vendors and not enough that took credit cards, so we really need an ATM. She said the Talent Show was great but was mainly attended by parents of the contestants; it didn’t draw others. We need another tent with adult entertainment. We need kosher food. Marty mentioned that July 4, 2020 is a Saturday, so the Orthodox Jews won’t come. Ann wants a Jumbotron or something before the fireworks thanking our sponsors and talking about future events (we have the biggest captive audience of anything we do). Ann said the Women’s Club wants to revive the old town hall where they do a skit about the history of Glendale at the old Town Hall. There was concern that it might be logistically difficult to add one more thing to Fourth of July and to get more kids in the place where we’re staging for the parade. Ann said she’d ask if they can do this at the little league picnic instead. Ann proposed having reduced sponsorship rates for Glendale chamber of commerce members. Jenna asked Ann if we could bundle the volunteer water along with the other water. Ann said yes. Marty said tent set up was good. Steve said there were no noise complaints. Jessica said the basketball was a great idea; maybe we should have two hoops next year. Bryan said he has one we can use. Marty suggested a clothesline across the inside of the tent with signs for all the food vendors. Ann wants to do this in a way that it doesn’t have to be redone every year. Bryan asked who would do this; do we need more volunteers just for this? Is the Brick coming back? We probably need two big food vendors next year. Steve wants to get the Sprecher truck again, but the Brick doesn’t want beer competition. Jenna said we should think about what’s iconic in Glendale; we should have them there. Bryan will call Tim tomorrow to see if The Brick is coming back. If they do, they should have more staff and more food in 2020. Jenna asked when we’re meeting. Most people can make 3rd Tuesdays.
