Hampton Waterways Restoration Project – May 12, 2022
6:30pm -8:00 pm, Fort Monroe Community Center, 100 Stilwell Dr., Fort Monroe, VA
BOARD APPOINTED MEMBERS
PRESENT: Linda Boone, Mara Yoko, Kathy Rogers ABSENT: *Chris Grady,* Grady McLean *City Council appointed
ATTENDEES: Robert Boone, Rory Hendricks, and HCCC staff -Cris Ausink
PRECIDING MEETING- Linda Boone -Linda thanked everyone for coming.
MINUTES: Kathy made a motion to accept January 13, 2022 minutes as recorded. Mara seconded the motion and carried.
REPORTS:
BBGF TRASH BASH-On May 5, Betsy McAllister, two Kecoughtan Biology & Environmental Science teachers, Adam Newland
and Linda had a Zoom meeting about the Trash Sculptures Project. Students will make a video sculpture prototype. On June
2, students will go on a field trip to BBGF to see possible location of sculpture.
BBGF –PMN OYSTER REEF- Linda reported that she put in a Project Proposal on March 24 to the Peninsula Master
Naturalists so PMN members can volunteer for their Oyster Reef Project that needs restoration. Adam contacted VIMS &
CNU graduate students to assess both shoreline and reef at BBGF.
EARTH DAY TABLE- Saturday, April 23, YH Thomas Complex- 10:00 AM- 1:00 PM- 88 visitors came to our HWRP table

JUNE 18- HWRP TENT- 9:00 AM- 1:00 PM-Buckroe Farmers Market. Linda & Robert will help with set up that morning.
HWRP MAY-AUGUST CLEANUP SCHEDULE- After discussion about tides & possible locations, the following schedule was
agreed upon:
MAY 21-Saturday, Pembroke Spit shoreline (low tide) 9-11 am. Park at pump station across from Spit- Need Site Captain
to pick up equipment and Liability Release Sign in sheet. (Cris –unavailable due to Rain Barrel Workshop and Farmers
Market)
JUNE 4- Saturday-CLEAN THE BAY DAY- Dandy Haven Marina Shoreline- 8:00-10:00 AM- Andy Gurkin- Site Captain
JUNE 9- Thursday-BUCKROE BEACH-6:30-7:30 pm
JULY 16-Saturday BBGF-NEWMARKET CK BOAT CLEANUP- 10:00 AM- 12:00PM, BBGF floating dock.
AUGUST 11- Thursday, Grandview Nature Preserve- 6:30- 7:30 pm
HWRP EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH using HWRP monies:
Rory suggested we have a tablet with time-lapse videos of oysters cleaning the water (instead of buying
aquarium tanks to show impact of oysters). Mara suggested display items with QR codes that will link to
information on topics such as oysters, litter and plastic. For example, a QR code on an oyster shell could show
where people can dispose their used shells for building a reef. These display items would be used at special
events or even at seafood restaurants. Another idea Mara mentioned is having a deck of cards with a picture
on one side and a QR code on the other side with information about the picture. Creative juices were flowing.
We will put to together a list and see what would be the best idea to use first.

Clean & Green Workplaces Meeting Notes 3

Absent: Alex Maness; Barb Abraham
Welcome & Roll Call
Jim welcomed attendees, roll call conducted. A quorum was present. Debbie took the meeting notes.
Meeting notes
Debbie made a motion to accept the May minutes with one minor correction, seconded by Jim and all
approved. Clean & Green is looking at ways to attract more members for this committee. Clean & Green
Award nominations: Woods Orchard, Buckroe Beach Farmers Market, Mercury Garden Center, and ask
Eboni about Coliseum Central businesses. Cynthia asked Hampton Parks & Rec employees to nominate
businesses. There was a suggestion to do a Lunch & Learn on Recycling for City employees using Zoom,
in-person, or a hybrid class. All Clean & Green members please look at the webpage and provide
feedback at the next meeting. Looking at doing an update on previous Clean & Green Award business
winners and choose some for highlighting. Beginning July1, the new business protocol is to post minutes,
after they are approved, online and post the agenda for the next meeting 1 week prior. Courtney will be
sending the minutes and agendas to be posted online.
