Reading/Approval of Minutes
There were no minutes from the June meeting as there was no quorum and no official business
was conducted. Minutes from February 7, 2019 approved.
Chair’s Report – Nancy Eason
2019-2020 School Grant Program
o The 2019-2020 application has minimal changes (updated names and phone
numbers).
o Nancy will include a cover letter.
o Ann Bain will assist with distribution of application within school system.
o In past, Commissioner visits to awardee schools has not worked out due to
school/teacher scheduling conflicts. This year, HCA will provide two options for
awardee reports: 1) Awardees will be invited to the October 2020 HCA meeting
to provide a grant report; 2) Optional site visits will be arranged – the site visits
will accommodate the teacher’s schedule therefore they will not be mandatory for
all Commissioners to attend. These options will be communicated in the grant
award letter.
o Each approved grant will award up to a total of $5,000 in funding unless an
application warrants additional funds. The 2018-2019 granting program did
require additional departmental funds, and if supplemental funds are needed for
the 2019-2020 cycle, they will be provided.
Artistic Director’s Report – Richard M. Parison, Jr.
Hampton Arts Activities
o The American Theatre’s 2019-2020 season begins with the 32nd Anniversary
Gala on October 5, 2019. Commissioners are encouraged to attend the event at
the early bird price of $150 ticket.
o The Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center is opening a new exhibit: 2019 Virginia
Artists Juried Exhibition. The opening reception is October 12, 2019. All
Commissioners are invited to attend the reception. Fall classes began October
1, 2019.
o Hampton Arts coordinated a call for proposals in conjunction with The Kroger Co
for a large mural at the Riverdale Shopping Plaza Kroger which is presently
1
under construction. Richard Nickel won the project grant. His design is very
Hampton-centric. Installation will begin December 2019 and the artwork will be
unveiled in January 2020.
Hampton Arts Education
o Hampton Arts Education had an incredibly successful summer with the Summer
Stage program. 33 children participated and ranged in age from 7-17. The all-
day, seven week course culminated in the production of Dr. Doolittle on August 1
and August 2, 2019. The Summer Stage program is led by Claire Geary, the
Assistant Education Manager. Plans for the 2020 Summer Stage are underway.
o Currently, the Fall Home School program is underway. 21 children between the
ages of 7-17 are enrolled. The program meets twice a week on Mondays and
Wednesdays from 1:00pm-3:00pm. The children will perform Elf Jr. on
December 20 and 21, 2019. The Home School program is led by Claire Geary,
the Assistant Education Manager.
o A new program, ArtWorks is kicking off during the fall 2019 Semester. This
program will launch a focused Master Teaching Artist-in Residence immersion
program in four Hampton City Public High Schools. Teachers are actively
submitting their schedule requests and instruction should begin in late October or
early November. The ArtWorks program is grant funded through the Hampton
