Hampton Coliseum Citizens Advisory Committee Meeting – October 24, 2017

Call to Order/Reading and Approval of Minutes:
At 12:14p.m., Chair Boester called the meeting to order.
Motion made by Ms. Hutton to approve the minutes of the September 26, 2017 meeting. Ms. Lawson seconded. The
motion passed.
Chair Report/Announcement:
Chair Boester stated the committee is now going into a closed meeting pursuant to Virginia Code Section 2.2-
3711 (A)(1) for discussion and recommendation of prospective candidates for appointment to the Coliseum
Advisory Committee. A motion of approval was made by Ms. Lawson and seconded by Ms. Hutton. A roll call
vote was conducted and unanimous consent was given.
Doors were closed and closed meeting sign posted. Closed Session Conducted.
Ms. Vander Vennet stated it is now appropriate to take a roll call vote and that to the best of our knowledge (i)
only public business matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirements under this chapter, and (ii) only
such public business matters as were identified in the motion by which the Closed Meeting was convened were
heard, discussed, or considered in the Closed Meeting. Any member who believes there was a departure from
the requirements of subdivisions (i) and (ii) shall so state prior to the roll call vote, indicating the substance of the
departure that, in his/her judgement has taken place. Such statements shall be recorded in the minutes. No
statements were made. Motion was made by Mr. Boester and seconded by Ms. Hutton. A roll call vote was
conducted and unanimous consent was given. Doors were opened and closed meeting sign removed.
Director’s Report:
Ms. Vander Vennet stated the month of September ’17 had 6 event days and 3 performances with 31,601 in
attendance. Events for September were Basscenter X.
October ’17 has had 6 event days and 4 performances with 33,570 in attendance. Events for October R&B
Superjam and Equipovision.
Statement of Revenues and Expenses for the period ending 9/30/17 shows the Coliseum with a negative
change in net position for the 2018 Fiscal Year. Compared to FY17, we are $194k ahead of this time last year.
Ms. Vander Vennet discussed implementing a request by the committee to host a Coliseum 101 information session
during meetings. Managers from the department divisions will attend to give a brief description of their division
functions. The first session will start in November with Marketing. Ms. Vander Vennet asked the members to submit
questions or information they would like to have covered.
Ms. Vander Vennet gave a tour of the Coliseum and asked for input from the committee on projects they felt would be
beneficial to the aesthetics of the Coliseum. Ms. Hutton presented an idea of having area school art students paint
replicas of concert posters on the walls of the Chesapeake Room.
