Hampton Senior Citizen Advisory Committee November 6, 2017 Hampton Senior Center Members Present: Martha Clark, Sarah Drew, Christine Evans, D. Farmer, Y. Gaynor, G. Gwynn, Jr., M. Johnson, Ingrid Kirschmann, Peggy Marshburn Agency Representatives: Mayor Donnie Tuck, Jimmy Gray, City Council, Wanda Rogers, Barbara Stewart, Linda Burke, Hampton Dept. of Social Services, Gina Lewis, Foster Grandparent Program, K. Trotter, S. Elswick, G. Jones Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, Laura Fitzgerald, City Manager’s Office, Vivian Clayton, Peninsula Agency on Aging, Linda Scott-Stone, Hampton Health Dept. Citizens: L. Kindred, R. Massengill, L. Wells, L. Williams, B. Boyd, Y. Dawkins, F. Holly, J. Francis, E. Alston, R. Gabriel, M. Schetting, S. Schetting, B. Anderson S. Drew opened the meeting and welcomed guests. G. Lewis read the minutes. A motion to accept the minutes as read was made by I. Kirschmann and seconded by P. Marshburn. The minutes were accepted by a majority vote. Mayor Donnie Tuck welcomed guests and informed citizens that the Hampton Chamber of Commerce sponsored a “State of the City” address, which will be aired on Channel 47. A citizen requested information regarding the lack of city-sponsored trips for senior citizens. Currently Parks and Recreation provides a school bus for trips, however citizens are concerned about the safety of those buses and would like to hear about the possibility of chartering coach buses that provide restroom facilities and comfort. Mayor Tuck and Councilman Jimmy Gray will investigate the possibility of a coach bus for future trips. Y. Gaynor provided on update on the Senior Citizenship award. The nomination period was closed on November 1st and the committee received 8 nominations. Voting packages were provided to all voting Committee members. The committee will continue to work with Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services regarding the food order and decorations for the event. The committee will plan for 60 participants. Y. Gaynor requested items for the gift bags to be forwarded to her by November 17th. S. Drew reported that the Senior Safety Summit was a great opportunity to spread the word about the SCAC activities. B. Stewart provided S. Drew with a list of resources for seniors to be distributed at the Senior Safety Summit. The listings included: Retirement communities on the Peninsula, Apartment listings for seniors (55 and older); Peninsula soup kitchens/food assistance/pantries/meal ministries; Energy Assistance Program fact sheet, nursing facilities located on the Peninsula, Elder law attorneys, Duties and authority of agents/Code of Va., Assisted living facilities in Hampton Roads, What is Medicare Fraud and Abuse, Medicare/Nursing Home comparisons, applications for health coverage, Indicators of abuse, neglect and exploitation, facts and tips for caregivers, Identify Theft information, What is Guardianship and the Power of Attorney duties and responsibilities, and Home health agencies. Fitzpatrick noted that City Hall and Healthy Families have an “Angel Tree” for needy families and inquired about the participation of SCAC. W. Rogers mentioned that there is also an “Angel Tree” at social services. SCAC members agreed to participate. L. Fitzpatrick also announced that she will be leaving her current position and joining the City Manager’s office for the city of Chesapeake B. Stewart reported that she will submit information to City Council regarding persons interested in joining SCAC. The scheduled speaker, Dr. Andrews was not in attendance.
