LaVerne Johnson, Treasurer Aug. 1, 2018 2 | Page Liaison’s Reports: City Manager’s Office – Mr. Bond stated this is a busy time for the city, as it is going through some transitional stages for personnel changes. In addition, he adds information for any city Liaison who may not be present at the meeting and offers assistance to the committee upon request. He has stated that citizen input is helpful and always welcomed. Education Hampton City Schools – No representative available Parks & Recreation – Ms. Patrice Richards reports on several upcoming events the Hampton Parks & Recreation is having, which are as follows: Adult Rec Connect Dice, Cards & Board Games…Monday – Friday 9:30 am to 1:30 pm – They are open from September 4, 2018 to May 31, 2019 (Closed during Teachers’ workday, Winter Break Camp, and Spring Break Camp) Fee: $20.00 HPRLS membership. Therapeutic Recreation Center is located at 4315 Kecoughtan Road, Hampton VA 23669 / 757-728-1710 Therapeutic Recreation-Afterschool Program – 2 pm-6pm (during school year) Ages 6-22 / Fee: $55.00 for each week / Assessment fee of $35.00 ***Full Day Programs are available on Teachers’ Work Day. For information regarding programs, visit the web site at: www.hampton.gov/parks Emergency Management – Information was shared regarding the Hampton Roads, Let’s Get Ready TOGETHER! Emergency Shelter Exercise for People with Disabilities & Access / Functional Needs. It was held on Friday, August 10, 2018, from 2:00 to 8:00 PM EDT, at George P. Phoenix School, 1061 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, VA 23666 For future events and emergency shelter exercises, contact Ms. Jenny Redick, HRPDC at 757-420-8300 or email her at: jredick@hrpdcva.gov Fire Department – Mr. Corey Johnson reported the importance of checking and replacing smoke alarms, for fire and heating safety. He also stated for those who may require special accommodations, there are adaptive materials / aids to detect fire and heat safety as well. He encouraged anyone to request these aids 3 | Page by contacting the fire department for more information or assistance with these devices. Mr. Johnson gave information regarding the Fire Alarm Festival activities which will be held at Sims Middle School, 170 Fox Hill Road, Hampton VA (fire station 7) on Saturday, October 6, 2018 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm. Topics will include: Fire Facts; Cooking/Heating Tips; Importance of Smoke Alarms; (Home) Escape Planning; Hoarding; Unintentional Injury/”Fall” Prevention; Poison Prevention; Medication Safety; Holiday Safety; Videos, & More! Open and free to the public! Ms. Denise James will be taking her place and can be reached at: denise.james@hamptonu.edu and her phone contact number is: 757-727-5913 Ms. Shackelford will reach out to her by telephone welcoming her to the committee as the Liaison for HU. Subcommittee Reports: Accessibility – Ellen Shackelford reports she will be calling 311 requesting a representative to phone her regarding the replacement of signage at the Hampton main Library on Victoria Blvd, as the signage there is very out dated and should be replaced with the appropriate verbiage – Reserved Parking (with universal wheelchair sign) and the fees attached to deter illegal parking. She encourages the committee members to report things that could be made more accessible or other issues related to accessibility to 311, so the matter can be corrected in a timely manner. As of the last report, she has not heard back from the city, but she will follow-up with the appropriate person to get an update on the status of the report. Transportation – Ms. Brown was not able to give a full report for the transportation committee, but will have more information at a later time. She apologizes for the delay. Awards Luncheon – Mr. Townsend was not available to report on the Awards Luncheon which will be held Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Crown Plaza. Ms. Jane Hobbs stated information will be given to the printing company by the August meeting, so there will be time for people to review the information. It was reminded that Ms. Jennifer Green, Deputy Clerk receives the information as well. 4 | Page Teachable moment/Education – Ms. Rita White, COACH Mentor-Team Coordinator, Community Knights, Incorporated, spoke today regarding the services CKI provides regarding how the organization feels the gap of community needs financially. She stated all the moneys raised are recycled back into the community as much as possible. There are many programs within the organization to assist those interested, such as, volunteer, developmental programs and mentors to oversee the programs. For more information regarding the work that CKI does, visit them at their web page at: www.communityknights.org or call them at: 757-870-6255 Legislation – No one to report information Publicity / Public Awareness –Barbara Stewart and Ellen Shackelford have attended The National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) annual conference, held in Washington D.C., July 2018, and will report on the content of the conference, upon Ms. Stewarts return. Old Business – LaVerne Johnson thanked the committee for approving the financial support for the purchase of the ALS books for the students learning American Sign Language. She stated it was a tremendous asset and appreciates the monetary contribution. Ms. Jane Hobbs stated that Ms. Ariel Jimenez was recognized at the City Council meeting for her participation for the Special Olympics National Games this year. New Business – Ms. Jane Hobbs mentioned the 2018 Christmas party for the group she supports at AbleRUs will ask for a monetary donation for the 450 participants, so each one will receive an individual gift this year. A nomination committee has been formed and will be comprised of the following: 1. Pat Brown, Chair 2. Sharon Griffin 3. Evelyn Austin They will report at the August meeting, once everyone has been contacted on his/her desire to serve as 2018-20 officers for the HMCFPWD’s. Ms. Griffin, expressed her concerns of the traffic pattern for down town Hampton, and wanted to know what can be done regarding the timing of the lights in order for pedestrians to cross the street safely. It was suggested she contact 311 and express her concerns, so a tracking number can be established and a follow-up, ticket number attached to the call / concern. Her call is likely to be forwarded to streets and roads for assistance with the issue. 5 | Page Ms. Jane Hobbs has recommended an amount of $300.00 be set aside for the luncheon as give-a-ways for guests attending the conference. It was determined this should be an ongoing line item, as the committee has an awards ceremony each year.
