Town and Gown Committee Meeting Tuesday, August 14, 2018 Lawson Conference Room, 8th Floor City Hall MINUTES ATTENDEES: Ann Bane, Steve Bond, Novelle Dickenson, Mary Fugere, Tommy Hunnicutt, Rodenna Kirksey, Dr. Richard Mason, Darren Robinson, Chad Smith, Raymond Tripp, Donnie Tuck, Toni Williams, and Brenda Bailey I. Call to Order – The meeting was called to order at 12:18pm by Chair Raymond Tripp II. Roll Call III. Approve June 12, 2018 Meeting Minutes – Mr. Hunnicutt moved to approve the minutes as presented, Mr. Dickenson seconded and the motion passed unanimously. IV. Nominating Committee Update – Mary requested recommendations from current committee members and offered the following suggestions: Downtown Hampton Development Partnership – Steve Mallon or Cyndi Masterstaff Thomas Nelson Community College Student – defer to Chad Smith At Large Members: Lakesha Renfro Brown, owner-Mango Mangeaux, Simply Panache Nail Bar & Pedi Spa, and Simply Panache Place Bob McKenna, Executive Director-Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Lisa Wornom-Zahralddin, Assistant Vice President-Private/Public Partnership Division, Peninsula Council for Workforce Development Peninsula Town Center business owner/manager City of Hampton Representatives: Steve Bond, Assistant City Manager Dacia Walker, Marketing & Communications Dan Mackey or Sgt. Nakia Peek, Hampton Police Department Tolu Ibikunle or Will Bane, Community Development Department V. Strategic Direction Subcommittees Goals & Objectives Update Communication/Community Education – Mary advised there are ongoing conversations about including Town & Gown information in SDV100 classes at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) and Hampton 101 classes at Hampton University (HU); Chad announced TNCC adjunct professors will have an all-campus meeting on Thursday, August 16 where he will present this proposal; he also advised that he became aware of a community service opportunity that pays $100/semester/student which Raymond inquired if it could apply to Hampton City Schools student interns, as well; *Novelle will determine how to reach faculty members at Hampton University in order to share Town & Gown webpage information; Mary advised Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau will begin producing updated visitor guides twice a year with a portion having custom wraps for HU and TNCC VI. Key Updates Since the June 12, 2018 Town & Gown Committee Meeting *Hampton University Freshman Move-In August 17 & 18, 2018 – Novelle advised Freshman Move-In and Orientation will take place August 17-18 with additional activities planned for Saturday evening, as well; Mayor Tuck suggested a Hampton Heat outing since the event was canceled due to inclement weather and rescheduled to 7p Saturday, August 18; Mary stated HU “Welcome” banners will be installed in time for the new arrivals; Mayor Tuck questioned if welcome banners with logos for all local education institutions (i.e.: Hampton University, Thomas Nelson Community College, Hampton City Schools, etc.) could be acquired and installed *Steve will investigate whether a welcome banner could be installed on I-64, at Raymond’s suggestion *Mary will investigate installation of banners on Mallory Street in Phoebus, at Toni’s suggestion Rodenna advised TNCC’s fall semester all-college day for faculty is scheduled for Thursday, August 16 in preparation for classes beginning August 21; Thomas Nelson Night at th the Races is scheduled for 7p Saturday, August 11; a 50 Anniversary Gala is scheduled for Saturday, October 13 at Hampton Roads Convention Center; a Founder’s Day celebration will be held at the Hampton Campus on October 4 Toni announced The Bistro at Victorian Station is now open daily for lunch; Sly Clyde Ciderworks will open their tasting room August 25 Robin stated TNCC will be spotlighted at the September 26 evening City Council meeting along with Boy Scouts “Moat Monsters” Troop and historical Fort Monroe tour guides Chad advised TNCC’s 10th Annual Car Show will be held 7a-2p Saturday, August 25; staff met with Hank Morgan to discuss utilizing War Memorial Stadium for TNCC games; he has been collaborating with Brooks at CVB to bring regional tourneys to Hampton; TNCC will be providing support for the City of Hampton football game at HU in September; TNCC is now offering a women’s tennis program Darren announced that Mayor Tuck will conduct a Mayor’s Forum at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea on September 27 from 6-8pm; he distributed a flyer for “Hampton 101” at Ruppert L. Sargent Building on Saturday, September 22 from 8a-1p, breakfast will be provided and a bus tour is scheduled from 130-330p Steve advised Hampton will host the 2019 Cities United Conference for Mayors, a national movement focused on eliminating the violence in American cities related to African American men and boys, committed to reducing homicides and shootings of African American men and boys by 50 percent by the year 2025; the 2019 Commission is seeking student involvement in activities being planned for upcoming events Mary stated the 2019 Commission Committee is planning a presentation in an upcoming Town & Gown Committee meeting; Virginia Governor Northam will attend a ceremony at 11a on August 24 where he will commemorate a grant received for archaeological investigations within Tucker Ceremony and sign an easement agreement; she announced the following events: ¨Virginia State Beekeepers’ Association Eastern Apiculture Symposium August 12-18 at Hampton Roads Convention Center ¨Jehovah’s Witness Annual Convention August 16-19 at the Hampton Coliseum ¨Bassnectar September 1-2 at the Hampton Coliseum ¨Phish October 19-21 at the Hampton Coliseum  ¨8th Annual Buckroe Beach Arts in the Park Saturday, September 8 from 10a-6p at Pavilion Park – Buckroe Beach ¨Virginia Community College System (VCCS) 2018 Workforce Professionals Academy September 18-20 at Hampton Roads Convention Center Novelle indicated he is looking forward to upcoming football games now that HU is part of the Big South Conference; he announced that Rev. Joan S. Parrott, Senior Pastor at Hampton First Baptist Church, passed away Sunday, August 12, arrangements are pending VII. November 13th Meeting Conflict with 2019 State of the City Address By consensus, the committee agreed to change the November meeting to 12p Thursday, November 15 VIII.
