Hampton Senior Citizen Advisory Committee June 5, 2017 Hampton Senior Center Members Present: Sarah Drew, Doris Farmer, Yvonne Gaynor, George Gwynn, Jr.,Martha Clark, Christine Evans, Ingrid Kirschmann, Peggy Marshburn, , Martha Johnson, Agency Representatives: Barbara Stewart, Linda Burke, Hampton Dept. of Social Services, L. Fitzpatrick, City Manager’s Office, Gina Lewis, Geneva Fitchett, Foster Grandparent Program, S. Elswick, G. Jones Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, Wanda Rogers, Hampton Dept. of Social Services, Linda Scott-Stone, Hampton Health Department, Bill Massey, Peninsula Agency on Aging Citizens:, E. Alston, G. Scott, W. Shackleford CALL TO ORDER:  S. Drew called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.  M. Jones welcomed everyone to the meeting.  G. Lewis called the roll and read the minutes from the May meeting.  Motion to accept the meeting minutes as read made by I. Kirshman…2nd by Y. Gaynor.  Minutes were voted and accepted by committee. SPEAKER: Anton A. Bell, Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney: Topic: Committing Fraud Against Seniors  Seniors have to be aware that there are criminals that prey on older Americans.  If anybody asks for personal information, you should never give it out. If you are not sure who you are speaking with, he suggests getting a number to call the establishment back to confirm that the call is legitimate.  Never give out personal information on the phone. If someone calls and ask if they are speaking to you never say YES they can use that YES as a way to open up accounts. Instead ask them who you are speaking with and most of the time they will hang up.  Also you can call 311 or you can use the white pages program application to search a telephone number  Unfortunately sometimes family members try to take advantage of seniors..  William Shackelford is reorganizing and formulating an Elderly Abuse Task Force. This task force will be a part of the Attorney General’s Office. They will address:  Dispute Resolutions, Predatory Lending and an Anti-Trust issues NEW TOPICS:  Debbie Blanton of the Clean City Commission – will be invited by S. Elswick for July meeting;  Chief of Police/Triad Speaker for August  Fire Safety / Cory Johnson – October (fire safety month)  Social Security Update, Long Term Care, and Nursing Homes  HRT updates/ bus shelters/ transportation  Housing for seniors  Hoarding OPEN DISCUSSION:  G. Gwynn raised questions about the incorporated status for the committee.  L. Fitzpatrick noted that she is working with the City Attorney’s office regarding the structure of HSCAC. She commented that historically, the city committees, commissions and boards are not separate legal entities. Additionally, she informed the group that the by-laws are being reviewed in regards to the Long Term Care Commission. ADJOURNMENT: S.
