Hampton Senior Citizen Advisory Committee October 2, 2017 Hampton Senior Center Members Present: Martha Clark, Sarah Drew, Christine Evans, George Gwynn, Jr., Ingrid Kirschmann, Peggy Marshburn Agency Representatives: Wanda Rogers, Barbara Stewart, Hampton Dept. of Social Services, Gina Lewis, Foster Grandparent Program, S. Elswick, G. Jones Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, Laura Fitzgerald, City Manager’s Office, Vivian Clayton, Peninsula Agency on Aging, Linda Scott-Stone, Hampton Health Dept. Citizens: L. Kindred, C. Fair, E. Alston, R. Gabriel, M. Schetting, S. Schetting G. Scott, B. Anderson S. Drew opened the meeting and welcomed guests. G. Lewis read the minutes. A motion to accept the minutes as read was made by I. Kirschmann and seconded by G. Gwynn. The minutes were accepted by a majority vote. C. Fair reported that the Citizenship Award sub-committee distributed the fliers to numerous locations and the committee will be developing a score sheet to rank the submissions. B. Stewart will join the sub-committee to facilitate any needs from the City. S. Elswick suggested that the remaining plaques made for last year be used after having the date removed. She also reported that last year the committee spent approximately $600 for food. There was discussion regarding the menu and the committee agreed that the menu will be heavy appetizers and cupcakes. S. Drew commented that the event should be open to all. L. Scott-Stone suggested limiting attendance to all nominees, SCAC members and winners with 2 guests, since the Senior Center will be hosting their own event in December. There was discussion concerning how many to prepare for at the holiday/senior citizenship award event. The committee agreed to invite all nominees. The winners of the awards would be able to invite 2 guests. The Subcommittee will meet and discuss details regarding number of participants and specific menu and report back at the November meeting. B. Stewart reported that there are eight (8) applications to serve on the committee. She reported that there are two (2) positions that will expire at the end of November and one (1) that will expire at the end of October. Three (3) members; B. Reese, L. Johnson and B. Farmer terms have expired but are eligible to serve a second term. B. Stewart will contact them to ascertain their interest in continuing on the committee. C. Perenzin has reported that she will no longer serve on the committee. L. Fitzpatrick reported that she is meeting with the City Attorney regarding the by-laws and the issue of excused and unexcused absences will be discussed. Drew reported that the Senior Safety Summit will be held on October 18 and that SCAC should have a table. S. Drew will secure materials from S. Elswick to have at the Senior Summit. S. Elswick reported that the Peninsuala Task Force on Aging meets the 4th Thursday of every month and suggested that SCAC have a representative at the meetings to report back to the Committee. Idea will be discussed further at next meeting. S. Drew commented that she has heard several complaints from seniors that SCAC is not active and only provides speakers. She suggests SCAC members go out into community to encourage participation. She is also concerned about seniors and depression over the holidays and would like to have a speaker at the November meeting address this issue. B. Stewart will contact Dr. Andrews at Thomas Nelson regarding a presentation at the SCAC meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Gina L. Lewis Secretary . Page 2 of 2
