Hampton Senior Citizen Advisory Committee July 1, 2019 Hampton Senior Center Members Present: Cynthia Harris, Martha Clark, Doris Farmer, Peggy Marshburn, Ingrid Kirschmann, Christine Evans, Linda Kindred, Martha Johnson, George Gwynn, Jr. Agency Representatives: Sean Clark, Gloria Jones Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services; Barbara Stewart Department of Social Services; Bill Massey, Beatrice Page-Perrin Peninsula Agency on Aging; Gina Lewis, Foster Grandparents Co-Chair Cynthia Harris called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m., called the roll and read the minutes from the May 6th SCAC meeting and a motion was made to accept the minutes by George Gwynn as read and the motion was 2nd by Doris Farmer. Minutes were accepted by those present. Old Business: Subcommittee reports: Cynthia Harris presented for the Awards Committee. Members will be contacted to set up an initial meeting following the holiday weekend; currently Christine Evans, Doris Farmer, Linda Kindred, Sally Waldo, Gloria Jones, and Martha Clark has been asked to join the committee. Catering is to be handled by Hampton Schools Food & Nutrition Services again and the site would be the Senior Center unless there is an increase in interest and attendance. Mrs. Waldo presented for the Resident Association subcommittee. Ms. Waldo sited no recent visits made due to inclement weather conditions, but that the committee would meet with Gloria after the SCAC session. Next site is The Woodlands at which flyers providing contact info for Amazon, UPS, USPS, and FedEx would be distributed. Langley Village has a new event coordinator and Ms. Waldo will attempt to contact her. Linda Kindred presented for the Town Hall subcommittee. Chris Bowman held a debriefing with committee on what went well/what could be improved. Linda noted that the next Mayor’s Town Hall Meeting will be July 18 at Bethel Temple, 6pm-7:30pm. Agency Reports: Gina Lewis provide the agency report for Foster Grandparents. Gina announced that the summer program currently has 20 volunteers. Foster Grandparents also has 2 hardworking students working with them through the city’s summer youth employment program. Bill Massey provide the agency report for Peninsula Agency on Aging. Mr. Massey noted that former Executive Assistant Maria Santasiero accepted a position in Richmond, but not before helping in securing a new assistant, Beatrice (Bea) Page-Perrin, who was present at this session. The in-Home and Meals on Wheels programs both have waiting lists, noting the demand for those services are great, but funding is still an issue. Newport News recently increased its funding for PAA services, Hampton is pending. A recent fundraiser for Meals on Wheels took place at Traditions Brewery in Newport News and netted $2000. A reminder given about the meals program at Ivy Memorial Baptist Church three days a week, 10am-2pm, for those older citizens in need. Bill is to forward brochures and information regarding the programs or contact him at 757-873-0541. PAA also submitted an area plan for aging services to the state for approval. They are also waiting on reauthorization of the Older Americans Act. Congressman Bobby Scott is chair of the oversight committee and members were encouraged to get the word out about the reauthorization and to contact Congressman Scott with questions.  Hampton Senior Citizen Advisory Committee July 1, 2019 Hampton Senior Center Public Comments: Chris Schetting (TRIAD) noted that SCAC members must become more visible in the community, stating that TRIAD attends SCAC meetings and is involved with/visible to several other area community activities. She noted that TRIAD’s annual fish fry at the Senior Center is a huge fundraiser and gets more attendees out to the annual senior picnic. Chris also encouraged members to attend TRIAD meetings the first Tuesday of each month at 10am. It was also announced that TRIAD will hold an expo on September 12 at Queen Street Church North, 8am-2pm. Guest Gary Banks added that another good community outreach would be the monthly bingo event for seniors at the Moose Lodge (Mercury & Pembroke), the second Monday of each month, 11am- 1:30pm. He added that several vendors are usually on hand and often there are speakers who address older citizen concerns.
