Hampton Senior Citizens Advisory Committee Hampton Senior Center, 3501 Kecoughtan Road March 4, 2024 Call to Order and Welcome Chair Linda Kindred opened the meeting by welcoming all in attendance and reminded all that the attendance sheet at the back of the room was to be signed upon arrival. She added that if anyone needed to be absent from future meetings to contact her directly at 757-776-2286. She noted that if anyone had questions, to ask them at the end of the meeting. Opening prayer was then offered. Roll Call & Approval of February Minutes Present: Linda H Kindred-Chair, Lewis Dawley III- Vice Chair, Martha L. Clark, Camilla Doctor, Phyllis Porter, Lynda Burke, Remi Travis Wright, Cassandra Alston-Townsley, Tonya L. Grant, Jamie Chapman Absent: C’Faison Harris City/Lead Agency Reps: Mayor Tuck, Vice Mayor Gray, David McCauley (HPRLS), Susan Elswick (HPRLS), Shaeron King (HPRLS), Shantel Hudgins (HPRLS), LaNetta Davis (PAA), Stephanie Taylor (Foster Grandparent Program), Phyllis Pallin (Hampton Human Services) Guests: Chris Schetting, Mike Schetting, Audrey Johnson, Ralph Burch, Angela Perry, Connie Buckler, Sandra Luckey, Gloria Jones, Aubrey Green Shantel Hudgins conducted the roll call; a quorum was present. The opportunity was given to the advisory board to review the February minutes. A motion to accept the February minutes as written was made, seconded, and unanimously approved. Opening Remarks Director McCauley and Mayor Tuck presented the “Special Work of Heart” award to Linda Kindred for her continued/outstanding dedication as a volunteer to the Hampton Senior Center and her active involvement as a board member of the Hampton Senior Center Advisory Committee. Linda thanked everyone for recognizing her for such an amazing award. 1 Director McCauley gave some additional opening remarks and proceeded to discuss informative updates on special current and future events that are to occur in the city in the coming weeks/months.  Mary Jackson Neighborhood Center playground ribbon cutting is scheduled on March 30th from 11am-2pm.  The Mosaic Festival will return on April 20th in Downtown Hampton. It will be a combination of Earth Day, International Children Festival, and Hampton History Museum Heritage Festival.  Blackbeard Festival is scheduled for May 31st-June 2nd at Mill Point Park.  Groovin’ by the Bay series will return nightly on Sundays from June 9th-August 26th at Mill Point Park.  Crabtown Seafood Festival is scheduled on August 31st and September 1st at Mill Point Park and Downtown Hampton.  The Bluebird Gap Farm Festival is scheduled on October 26th and October 27th at Bluebird Gap Farm.  The Hampton History Museum also has a series of programs and events that will be available on www.hampton.gov. Subcommittee Reports Senior Residential Committee: Tonya Grant shared the following information: • Lynda Burke met with the residents from SinClair Commons in reference to their concerns about the building. • Lynda also registered four residents from the facility to attend the Community Forum on Aging on March 6th. • Residents were encouraged to attend the upcoming SCAC meetings, but transportation continues to be a concern for the facility. Linda Kindred shared that they are working with SinClair Commons to ensure that they are comfortable and have everything that is needed. She encouraged residents to speak with the facility manager about their concerns and give an opportunity for the facility manager to correct the issue. Linda also stated that there is a new facility on Pembroke Ave in Hampton, VA and she will speak with the facility managers to find out more information in reference to their services. Hospitality Committee: Cassandra Townsley shared the following information: • Next meeting is scheduled for March 4th. • The Hospitality Committee will meet with the Awards Committee in June. 2 Mayor’s Town Hall: Lewis Dawley III shared the following information: • Next meeting is scheduled for March 4th. • Some community members approached with the idea of having upcoming meetings held at another community center. The committee is considering the idea of changing the meeting location. City/Lead Agency Updates PAA: LaNetta Davis shared the following information: • On March 6th, The Annual Community Forum on Aging will be held at Liberty Live Church in Hampton, VA. The keynote speaker is A’Leila Bundles who is the great-great-granddaughter of Madame CJ Walker. Linda Kindred shared the following additional information: • There will be an insurance seminar from TransAmerica Insurance Agency at Little England Cultural Center from 11am-12pm. • There are a variety of fitness programs that are offered at the Hampton Senior Center. Flyers are available for more information in reference classes offered. • Each board member should be involved in at least one of the subcommittees. Public Comment Linda gave an opportunity for visitors/guests to speak. Visitor, Sandra, expressed her gratitude for the SCAC board. Judy Richardson (President of the Citizen Police Academy Alumni) expressed her appreciation for Linda Kindred. Gloria Jones invited the HSCAC board to West Hampton Community Center to possibly hold their meetings at that location to expand to more seniors within Hampton. Vice Mayor Gray expressed his appreciation for Linda Kindred and he also reminded everyone that the budget is being prepared. The budget will be presented to the community and gives citizens an opportunity to weigh in concerning the budget. The meeting will be held at Bethel High School on March 7th and at Kecoughtan High School on March 9th. He strongly encouraged all to attend. Adjournment Linda closed the meeting by asking all to remember to be a ray of sunshine in someone’s cloud, adding that you may be the only person someone sees, and your smile or act of kindness will brighten someone’s day.
