Hampton Senior Citizens Advisory Committee Hampton Senior Center, 3501 Kecoughtan Road June 3, 2024 Call to Order and Welcome Chair Linda Kindred opened the meeting by welcoming all in attendance and reminded all that the attendance sheet at the back of the room was to be signed upon arrival. She added that if anyone needed to be absent from future meetings to contact her directly at 757-776-2286. She noted that if anyone had questions, to ask them at the end of the meeting. Opening prayer was then offered. Roll Call & Approval of May Minutes Present: Linda H Kindred-Chair, Lewis Dawley III- Vice Chair, Remi Travis Wright, Phyllis Porter, Tonya L. The opportunity was given to the advisory board to review the May minutes. A correction was noted on the second page in reference to the Dockside Seafood Festival. A motion to accept the May minutes with necessary corrections was made, seconded, and unanimously approved. Opening Remarks Director McCauley provided opening remarks and proceeded to discuss informative upcoming updates on special current and future events that are to occur in the city in the coming weeks/months.  Groovin’ By the Bay is scheduled for June 9th-August 26th at Mill Point Park.  The Crabtown Seafood Festival is scheduled for August 31st through September 1st.  Indoor Flea Market scheduled for July 13th at Fox Hill Neighborhood Center.  The Annual Kiwanis Fishing Clinic is scheduled for July 16th at the James T. Wilson Fishing Pier. 1  Blue Bird Gap Farm Fall Festival scheduled for October 26th and October 27th.  Watersports will begin in June at Buckroe Beach  Community Input Meeting is scheduled for June 4th at Buckroe Baptist Church in reference to Buckroe Beach Playground new designs.  An additional Community Input Meeting is scheduled for June 20th at Antioch Baptist Church.  The following information was shared in reference to community, neighborhood, and specialty center summer youth programs: Summer Fun Camp for Ages 6-10 June 17-Aug. 23rd 2024, Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Fort Monroe Community Center, Northampton Community Center, West Hampton Community Center Cost: $20/child, non-refundable registration fee $80/ weekly fee ($75 for each additional) w/PRLS (membership) $100/ weekly fee ($95 for each additional) w/PRLS (membership) Summer Fun Camp includes daily activities, educational speakers, special projects, and more designed to engage, inspire, and entertain children all summer long. Nutritious meals and snacks are provided. Teen Life Unplugged and Video Game Summer Camp for Ages 11-14 June 17-Aug. 23, Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Fort Monroe Community Center, Northampton Community Center, West Hampton Community Center Cost: $20/child non-refundable registration fee $80/ weekly fee ($75 for each additional) w/PRLS (membership) $100/ weekly fee ($95 for each additional) w/PRLS (membership) Teens can experience the ultimate summer camp combining modern technology with traditional outdoor experiences. Teens of all skill levels and backgrounds come together here to share their passion for gaming while enjoying classic camp activities like swimming, basketball, arts & crafts, and more. Free lunch and snacks included. All-City Basketball Camp for Ages 8-14 July 1-Aug. 23, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. North Phoebus Community Center Cost: $20/child non-refundable registration fee & $50/weekly fee Campers will have the opportunity to participate in a small-group basketball training session, teaching players of all skill levels fundamentals of the game. Camp activities include on- court group sessions focusing on shooting, dribbling, defense, and other essential skills. Each basketball camper will receive a weekly post-camp report and important takeaways. Free lunch and snacks included. 2 Therapeutic Recreation Camp Super Star for Ages 6-22 June 17- Aug. 23, 7 am-6 pm Therapeutic Recreation Center Cost: $100 per child/ w/membership $120 per child/ w/o membership Campers enjoy recreational activities with peers, which include games, creative activities, and cooking. This program is intended for individuals with disabilities and requires prior registration and assessment. Participants should be capable of using the restroom with minimal assistance, following two-step directions, and willing to participate. Therapeutic Recreation programs maintain a staff-to-participant ratio of 1:4. Lunch and snacks are included. Summer Nights Fastbreak Basketball 5-on-5 League for Ages 14-18 July 9 - August 15, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-10 pm Northampton and West Hampton Community Centers This 5-on-5 League is played in two, 20-minute halves, and follows Virginia High School League Rules with a few exceptions. Coaches undergo background check and testing to receive a coaching badge. Trophies and a player award are given at the end of the league, and each participant receives a "Summer Fastbreak" t-shirt. Free pizza and a DJ after each game. “The Hamptons” Draft Day Selection Event for Grades 6-8 Saturday, June 8, 6-9 pm Buckroe Beach “The Hamptons" Summer Basketball League will host a basketball draft selection event at Buckroe Beach, where players showcase their abilities to the coaching staff of “The Hampton” Summer Basketball League. Each age group will have 50 minutes to play before being selected for teams. Registration begins on May 21, 2024, at the North Phoebus Community Center. Four teams will be per age group, with a maximum of 15 players per roster. The event is open to all skill levels, and walk-up registration is allowed. The scheduled play times for each age group are 6pm for 6th Graders, 7pm for 7th Graders, and 8pm for 8th Graders. "The Hamptons" Summer Basketball League Powered by C.A.T.C.H Featuring Buck Joyner for Grades 6-8 at Neighborhood Centers Saturdays, July 13th- August 10th, 6pm-9pm Mary Jackson Neighborhood Center (6th Graders) and Y.H. Thomas Center (7th & 8th Graders) The Hampton Summer Basketball League powered by C.A.T.C.H., featuring Buck Joyner will bring back an old-school appeal as summer basketball returns to the outdoor playgrounds in the City of Hampton. Games will be held on Saturday evenings to promote youth crime prevention and will have a family-friendly atmosphere. The league will be divided into age groups to encourage accessibility and participation over competition. This 3 league is coed-friendly and open to all players, regardless of experience or skill level. Each division will have a championship game and a 3rd/4th place game, as well as a league MVP trophy and First-Place medals for the championship team. “Making A Splash/ Parks After Dark” Youth Event Series for All Ages July 12, July 26 & August 16, Fridays, 6 pm-10 pm July 12th (Buckroe Beach), July 26th (West Hampton Community Center), August 16th (Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center) Patterned after the national “Parks After Dark” model, this annual event series is back this year and expanding to three locations! We invite all residents for a fun-filled evening featuring water balloon games, a Slip 'n' Slide, Video Game bus, Dee Jay, karaoke, bounce houses, food trucks, and much more. Bring your lawn chairs and bathing suits if you choose to participate in water activities. North Phoebus Community Center (NPCC) Fitness Center Mon-Fri 8 am-8 pm Cost: $15 per month with HPR membership Sat 8 am-4 pm Age: 16 and over Girls Got Game Too (NPCC) Date: Thursday’s June 27th-August 15th Time: 4 pm-6 pm Cost: Free with Membership Age: 6-17yrs. Girls can join a safe and fun program to explore computer gaming. Only for girls, the program includes a T-shirt, learning, practice, and an ice cream celebration at the end. Grassroots Basketball Small Ball Camp (NPCC) Date: May 4th/May 18th/June 1st Time: 12 pm-1 pm Cost: Free with membership Age: 6-7yrs. Grassroots basketball will provide a basketball camp for our small ballers. Camp instruction and drills will be specifically geared toward youth. 4 NPCC Gaming League Dates: Tuesdays from June 25th-August 13th Time: 4 pm-6 pm Cost: Free with Membership Age: 6-17yrs Description: Join our Battle Lab gaming competition in Roblox and Fortnite! Score big in our computer lab and win a T-shirt and pizza party! Be ready to win big with your family and gain all bragging rights for the night. 5  Northampton Community Center (NHCC) Fitness Center Mon-Fri 8 am-8 pm Cost: $15 per month with HPR membership Sat: 8 am-4 pm Age: 16 and over Taekwondo (NHCC) Date: Ongoing -Wednesdays Time: 6 pm-7 pm Cost: $30.00 per month Ages: Children-Adults 5 and Up Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that focuses on kicking and punching for self-defense, fitness, and confidence building. Our classes are suitable for all ages, experience levels, and special needs. Therapeutic Recreation Center (TR) Family Fun Night Date: July 27, 2024 Time: 4 pm-7 pm, Saturdays Cost: Free, Open to the Public Ages: Families Therapeutic Recreation Center Does a member of your family have a disability? Bring the family to participate in games and activities. You’ll get the opportunity to meet with other families and learn about area resources, all while having fun! Registration is required. Presentation-Hampton History Museum Director McCauley introduced Al Hoilman as the Deputy Director, Curator, and Project Manager of the Hampton History Museum (HHM). Al thanked everyone in attendance for inviting him to speak at the SCAC meeting. He shared that the Hampton History Museum has a wide range of exhibits that include permanent exhibits located on the first floor and a changing gallery on the second floor. Every other year, they display a brand-new exhibit such as the following: • Give Me Liberty Exhibit • Bayshore Beach Exhibit • Hampton One Design Boating The Hampton History Museum approach exhibits by finding a need of a story to be told. They also have opportunistic exhibits to be displayed such as the Hampton One Design Boating. 6 A current exhibit that is being displayed is about Chris Kraft. Kraft was a local Hamptonian from the Phoebus area. He was an engineer and scientist at Langley. Langley was considered to be NASA during the 1950s and 1960s. Langley created a Space Task Force group to come up with the concept of how to control all of the activities in reference to launching a rocket. Chris Kraft was the scientist that developed the concept of Mission Control. The concept was a success where they sent him to Houston to become the Director of Manned Space Flight Center. The Kraft exhibit was created in remembrance of what would have been his 100th birthday. Kraft’s family approached the Hampton History Museum to see if they would like to accept Kraft’s collection of personal memorabilia. The Hampton History Museum gladly accepted the items and began creating the exhibit that is now displayed on the second floor through March 2025. Al began to share the following interesting information about Chris Kraft: • Attended Hampton High School where he played baseball. • Played baseball at Virginia Tech. • Continued to play baseball in his 30’s and 40’s with local club teams. • Light at victory cigar when a mission was successfully completed. • Hampton presented Chris Kraft Day in 1965. • Injured in a fire at the age of 3 that caused him to not be able to join the Navy during World War II. Instead of joining the Navy, he became an aerospace engineer because he wanted to contribute to the war efforts. • Received a degree in aerospace from Virginia Tech and returned back to Hampton to begin his career at Langley Research Center. In conclusion, Al encouraged all to visit the Hampton History Museum website to get more information about the exhibits as well as upcoming events. Linda thanked Al for an informative presentation. Subcommittee Reports Awards Committee Linda Kindred shared the following information: • Committee will meet next month prior to the July SCAC meeting. Mayor’s Town Hall Lewis Dawley III shared the following information: • Committee will meet next month in July to prepare for the next Mayor’s Town Hall. • Linda Kindred added that the Mayor’s Town Hall is to occur every six months (twice a year). 7 Senior Residential Committee Tonya Grant shared the following information: • Committee will meet next month prior to the July SCAC meeting. • Committee requested assistance from Linda Kindred to receive information to combat some of the resistance that they are getting while entering facilities. • The committee is looking to have a second form of communication to seniors that do not reside in facilities. City/Lead Agency Updates PAA: LaNetta Davis shared the following information: • PAA have started the Senior Cool Care Program for individuals aged 60 and older. The program is for anyone in need of a boxed fan or AC unit. • There will be a public forum to discuss the needs for older adult’s gaps in services and under served populations in the community. The public forum is scheduled for June 13th at PAA beginning at 11:30am. Human Services: Ethel Heyward shared the following information: • June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month. • Human Services has relocated to 400 Butler Farm Road. Public Comment Linda gave an opportunity for visitors/guests to speak. Vice Mayor Gray shared that Al from the Hampton History Museum is currently compiling information for an exhibit about the VA School for the Deaf & Blind. He also took the time to applaud the staff in reference to the Air Power Park ribbon cutting that previously occurred. The renovations occurred with the help of a $700,000 grant. He also shared that Council Meetings will be reduced in the summer months. There will only be one meeting for June, July, and August. A visitor asked a question in reference to accessing information for different programs and activities for Seniors. Director McCauley shared that schedule of activities and programming would be available on the www.hampton.gov website. Vice Mayor Gray also shared that Hampton E-News is also a valuable resource of information for a variety of events/programs. Linda shared the following upcoming events:  Father’s Day Cookout scheduled for June 14th at Senior Center from 12pm-2pm.  Father’s Day Celebration scheduled for June 15th at North Hampton Community Center from 2:30pm-4:30pm.  Senior Cruise scheduled for June 19th at the Spirit of Norfolk.  Summer Breeze Timeless Models Fashion Show and Brunch scheduled for July 26th at West Hampton Community Center from 11:30am-3pm. 8 Jamie Chapman asked if a subcommittee could be created regarding the challenges that seniors face. Linda approved for the subcommittee to be created. Adjournment Linda closed the meeting by asking all to remember to be a ray of sunshine in someone’s cloud, adding that you may be the only person someone sees, and your smile or act of kindness will brighten someone’s day.
