Town and Gown Committee Meeting Tuesday, October 9, 2018 Lawson Conference Room, 8th Floor City Hall MINUTES Attendees: Mary Fugere, Kellie Goral, Anzell Harrell, Tommy Hunnicutt, Rodenna Kirksey, Steven Lynch, Dr. Richard Mason, Jordan McKinney, Chad Smith, Donnie Tuck, Raymond Tripp, and Brenda Bailey Guests: Chuck Rigney, Darren Robinson I. Call to Order – Chair Tripp called the meeting to order at 12:17 pm, introduced Chuck Rigney, newly appointed Director of Economic Development, called for a moment of silence to honor Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) coach Armand Brown who passed away unexpectedly last month and a card will be passed around for all to sign; Chad announced he has resigned from his position at Thomas Nelson Community College for another opportunity out of Virginia and this will be his last meeting with this committee II. Roll Call III. Approve August 14, 2018 Meeting Minutes – Mr. Hunnicutt moved to approve the meetings as presented, Mr. Harrell seconded and the motion passed unanimously IV. Nominating Committee Update – Ms. Fugere advised the following considerations for committee membership: Lakeisha Renfro Brown, Owner Mango Mangeaux, Simply Panache Nail Salon, The Hampton Steve Mallon or Cyndi Masterstaff, Downtown Hampton Development Partnership Robert “Bob” McKenna, CEO Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Lisa Wornom-Zahralddin, Peninsula Council for Workforce Development Assistant Vice President for Private/Public Partnerships Mark Crump, Owner State Farm Insurance Agency Steve Bond, City of Hampton Assistant City Manager Darren Robinson, City of Hampton Neighborhood Development Associate Robin McCormick, City of Hampton Communications Strategist Dan Mackey, Hampton Police Department Master Police Officer Sgt. Nakia Peek, Hampton Police Department V. Strategic Direction Subcommittees Goals & Objectives Update a. Communication/Community Education – Mary provided a summary of meeting notes distributed; volunteers are needed for Hampton University Hampton 101 session; Chad will share Thomas Nelson Community College SDV 100 contact; Raymond and Mary will participate in a taping of HCS Connects at 11a October 16 at Jones Middle School to discuss the Hampton University Town & Gown Committee b. Economic Development/Student Retention – Steve noted the committee drafted a written survey for post high school students; the committee is exploring possibilities for a town meeting with student government associations to increase interaction between students and the Town & Gown Committee; the subcommittee will  continue to meet and explore why students leave the area and/or how to retain them; Jordan McKinney will join the subcommittee; Anzell will provide Hampton University point of contact information VI. Key Updates Since the August 14, 2018 Town & Gown Committee Meeting Tommy advised he would appreciate more discussion of job opportunities for post high school students during summer months Donnie announced the City of Hampton Strategic Planning Kickoff meeting at Hampton Roads Convention Center on Tuesday, October 29 Jordan noted the 2018-2019 school year has begun and homecoming events will take place October 28-30; the HU students thank the City of Hampton for assistance during Hurricane Florence; HU students are looking for volunteer opportunities Kellie advised Dr. Jeffery Smith will be speaking at the State of the City address November 13; HCS is sponsoring an Opioid Awareness Night from 630-8p November 27 in the Veterans Conference Room at the Ruppert Sargent Building where they will premiere a video Chad advised he will obtain a TNCC Human Services degree point of contact so they can be invited to the Opioid Awareness Night event; he announced the following events: -TNCC Career Fair being held from 10a-1p October 17 and is open to the public -Community Health Day October 15-16 -proceeds of the basketball game on Saturday, November 3 at Bethel High School will go to scholarships -staff is coordinating women’s basketball games to occur prior to men’s basketball games Rodenna noted the 50th Anniversary Gala will take place on Saturday, October 13 and tickets are still available at TNCC.edu Chuck is excited to be part of the Town & Gown Committee; he would like to add Workforce Development information to the webpage Darren advised he would like to see Town & Gown represented at the Community Plan Kickoff and will forward the information to Brenda for distribution; volunteers are needed for the next Hampton Home Repair Blitz in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity will take place October 20 when work will be done on 18 homes and the Boys & Girls Club, Anzell offered Hampton University student volunteers Anzell noted the opening convocation of seniors was conducted on September 30; as president of the Student Government Association, Jordan was selected to participate in the U.S. Senate Town Hall featuring Senator Tim Kaine on October 3 and was invited to spend the day with Senator Kaine; student leaders are involved in tutoring Hampton City Schools students and a special welcome ceremony at select schools in the district; more than 700 parents attended parents weekend October 5-6 and more than 800 people were served food and beverages at the tailgate party before the game Steve announced the following: Fish & Grits Southern Kitchen (southern food with a twist) opened September 25 at 3110 Allainby Way in Peninsula Town Center; Gourmet Takeaway (gourmet meal pick up or delivery service of chef prepared healthy meals) will open at 1973 Pembroke Avenue in the Buckroe Shopping Center; construction at the Rally’s at 1072 W Mercury Boulevard in Riverpointe Shopping Center is expected to be complete in 3-4 weeks; Tecnico Corporation (Marine & Industrial Contractors) are preparing to occupy 150K square feet  at 2000 Enterprise Parkway under a new 3-year lease; Ashley Stewart will open a retail store at 2571 McMenamin Street in Peninsula Town Center on November 9th with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony; Sale’s New York Pizza opened Monday, September 24th at 87 Lincoln Street. In other business news, the WVS Development agreement due diligence period and the developer’s right to terminate the master development agreement expired on September 26, no notice of title defects for respective properties was given and the developer continues to advance the project; sponsorship opportunities are still available for the Coliseum Central BID 20th Annual Holiday Parade being held Saturday, November 17. The Hampton, a Simply Panache Venue, will hold an open house on October 18 from 5-8p at 34 E Mellen Street; staff met with engineers to review submission requirements for the revised new Kroger Grocery Store in Riverpointe Shopping Center, the square footage of the store has been reduced from 125,000 to 113,000 and the revised floor plan requires realignment of the parking and entrances, the developer will submit new plans around November 1st while the plans for 50,000 square feet of new retail remains unchanged; staff communicated with Harris Teeter’s director of real estate on October 3 when he stated they will place signs to notify the community the store is coming to Willow Oaks Shopping Center on Fox Hill Road and he will notify staff when the signs are installed Mary announced the following events: Signature Equipo November 11-13 at Hampton Coliseum; Virginia School Counselor Association (VSCA) Conference October 14-16 at Hampton Roads Convention Center; Phish October 19-21 at Hampton Coliseum; Peninsula SPCA Barktoberfest Festival & Dog Walk October 20 at 5p in Mill Point Park; Hampton Comicon October 20-21 from 9a-4p at Hampton Roads Convention Center; Stamp Scrap Art Tour October 20 from 10a-5p and October 21 from 10a-3p at Hampton Roads Convention Center; Salty Dawgs 2018 Fall Rally October 24-November 2 at Bluewater Yachting Center; Hampton University Homecoming Weekend October 25-27; Hampton Roads Soul Music Festival 730p October 27 at Hampton Coliseum VII. **REMINDER** Next Meeting: November 15, 2018 VIII.
