Town and Gown Committee Meeting Tuesday, November 15, 2018 Lawson Conference Room, 8th Floor City Hall MINUTES ATTENDEES: Ann Bane, Steve Bond, Novelle Dickenson, Mary Fugere, Kellie Goral, Anzell Harrell (12:23p), Jordan McKinney (12:23p), Toni Williams, Raymond Tripp, and Brenda Bailey Guests: Robin McCormick, City of Hampton Communications Strategist; Darren Robinson, City of Hampton Neighborhood Development Associate I. Call to Order – Chair Tripp called the meeting to order at 12:18pm II. Roll Call III. Approve October 9, 2018 Meeting Minutes – Chair Tripp advised the minutes were distributed and called for a motion to accept; Mary moved, Novelle seconded and the minutes were unanimously approved IV. Nominating Committee Update – Mary reminded the committee of the nominee names: Lakeisha Renfro Brown, Steve Mallon or Cyndi Masterstaff, Robert “Bob” McKenna, Lisa Wornom-Zahlraddin, Mark Crump, Steve Bond, Darren Robinson, Robin McCormick, Dan Mackey, and Sgt Nakia Peek; Chair Tripp called for a motion to accept the nominees as presented, Mary moved to accept the names presented and Novelle seconded; a roll call vote was taken which resulted as follows: Ayes: Bane, Dickenson, Fugere, Goral, Harrell, McKinney, Williams, Tripp Nays: None **Mary will contact the new committee members and invite them to the December 11 meeting V. Strategic Direction Subcommittees Goals & Objectives Update Communication/Community Education – Mary stated no subcommittee meeting was held in November; Mary will coordinate with Patra Johnson at Hampton University to schedule a Town & Gown Committee session in University 101; Mary called for volunteers to join the subcommittee to which Robin, Jordan, Toni and Darren responded Economic Development/Student Retention – Raymond reported, in Steve Lynch’s absence, that the subcommittee met November 7 to identify strategies for capturing student engagement and feedback; the December meeting will incorporate student government leaders to determine methods of engaging the broader student body **Anzell will notify the subcommittee of the optimal date in December to maximize Hampton University Student Government Association participation **Raymond will initiate moving forward with similar participation of Thomas Nelson Community College student government members VI. Key Updates Since the October 9, 2018 Town & Gown Committee Meeting Ann noted the City of Hampton State of the City Address was a resounding success that provided participants with valuable recognition of the Academies of Hampton initiative Mary stated she and Raymond were interviewed about the Town & Gown Committee for recorded session of HCS Connects that has aired twice; she will schedule a future Round Robin session; she expressed excitement about very busy event calendars for October and November; she announced the 30th Annual Downtown Hampton Lighted Boat Parade will take place from 715-9p on Friday, December 7 Toni announced grand opening of The Hampton (event venue for up to 125 maximum occupancy) was very well-attended; Fuller’s Raw Bar is in the final stages of opening preparations; the 7th Annual Phoebus Holiday Illumination will take place 5-9p Friday, December 7 with a special reading of “The Night Before Christmas” by Vice-Mayor Jimmy Gray followed by a variety of special activities Kellie thanked Raymond and Mary for their part in the HCS Connects Town & Gown Committee taping session; Phoebus High School will be pitted against their rival York High School in the 2018 Virginia High School Football Playoff Brackets: VHSL Group 3A on Friday, November 16 at 7p; she praised the schools and city for a very successful combined State of the City Address featuring Hampton City School students and an Academies of Hampton presentation; Hampton City Schools will be closed Wednesday through Friday, November 21-23 for Thanksgiving; the first Opioid Awareness event will be held at the Ruppert Sargent Building (One Franklin Street) on Tuesday, November 27 at 630p; WorkOne Center Ribbon Cutting & Open House 10a Friday, November 30 at Y.H. Thomas Community Center (1300 Thomas Street); Hampton City Schools executive staff and school board members are attending the 2018 Virginia School Board Association (VSBA) Convention today and tomorrow where the Academies of Hampton are being showcased **Kellie will send Brenda a HCS Connects link to be published on the Town & Gown Committee webpage Robin stated the State of the City Address was a great success due to the participation of Hampton City Schools students; Daily Press will publish the Hampton Holiday Events calendar on November 16; she distributed the 2019 Hampton calendar, noting that having all public events on one calendar provides enhanced event planning coordination and promotion Steve advised the October 30th Community Plan Kickoff was a great success with a wide demographic variety of attendees; he called for student volunteer participation at the August 24th kickoff events being planned by 2019 Commission Committee; the 2019 Cities United Annual Conference will be hosted by Mayor Tuck at the Hampton Coliseum August 19-23, staff is seeking volunteers from any and all related avenues Darren advised the previously announced Hampton Home Repair Blitz was rained out and has been rescheduled for May 4th, 2019, staff is recruiting additional homes in need of repairs; Hampton 101 is scheduled for Saturday, November 17 and includes free breakfast, lunch and a bus tour of the city Jordan announced Hampton University was the victor at their homecoming game and all activities were well-attended; HU students were very active in the November 7th local elections  Anzell requested prayers for Pamela Richardson whose mother was placed in hospice last week; this year’s homecoming events featured more than 100 vendors, garnered the highest attendance in more than 10 years and surrounding hotels were completely booked; the Student Leadership Program hosted a Harvest Fair that was attended by more than 250 local community children; the Leadership students continue to tutor youth at local churches and 3-4 more churches have been added to the roster; students will host an on-campus thanksgiving dinner for 40+ families at 6p on Friday, November 16; Senior Day/Corporate Partners Day at 1p on Saturday, November 17 will be the last game of the season and the Pirates will play against the St. Andrews Knights; the Emancipation Oak Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony will take place at 6p Monday, November 26 Novelle stated more than 150 honor students from the local area were invited to participate in classes and a variety of events at Hampton University; an open house was hosted by Hampton by more than 1500 students from around the state Raymond announced the 20th Annual Coliseum Central Holiday Parade at 930a on Saturday, November 17 sponsored by Sentara CarePlex will feature 65 entries, 6 large balloons, 7 marching bands (one from Richmond), and will be recorded to air on Channel 3 for two showings; additionally, HCS held an art contest and the winning art will be featured on promotional items including t-shirts worn by parade volunteers; the Coliseum Central Chick-Fil-A owner honored the winners at each school with Chick- Fil-A meals for a year; Bryant & Stratton will sponsor the VIP tent; parade volunteers include 15 Hampton City Schools students VII.
