Call to Order Chair Tripp called the meeting to order at 12:23pm II. Approve April 9, 2019 Meeting Minutes Chair Tripp advised the minutes have been distributed for review and called for a motion to approve minutes as presented; Mary Fugere moved, Ann Bane seconded, and the minutes were unanimously approved IV. Strategic Direction Subcommittees Goals & Objectives Update Communication/Community Education – Mary Fugere noted that the subcommittee members were invited to a meeting during the May 7th Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau Open House at the Hampton History Museum which Kellie Goral attended; no other updates were provided Economic Development/Student Retention – Steve Lynch stated the group continues its efforts to develop a directory and the information sheets are ready for review by Marketing, Inc.; a fall semester outreach event for HU students to enhance communication and connection with the university is under development V. Key Updates Since the April 9, 2019 Town & Gown Committee Meeting Kellie announced Dr. Smith was selected as the 2020 Virginia Superintendent of the Year and is now eligible for the national title; three of five sessions in WVEC’s Cheryl Tan series on Academies of Hampton have aired and are available on Hampton City Schools YouTube channel; a link for Hampton Education Foundation’s Give Local 757 campaign is available on the HCS home page; watch for upcoming high school commencement ceremonies Darren recapped the May 4th Habitat for Humanity Home Repair Blitz sponsored by Starbucks Coffee with the following information: 117 volunteers made repairs to 15 homes in the Shell Road neighborhood; he announced the next blitz will be a joint effort with Newport News in September or October 2019 Mary advised Phoebus High School culinary students won the national NASA HUNCH Culinary Challenge and their winning dish will be processed for spaceflight within six to nine months; a film developed by the 2019 Commemorative Commission K-12 Institute will be shown at  Hampton University School of Journalism Monday-Thursday’s in July to increase awareness surrounding the history of the 1619 First African Landing; the film is also available on YouTube, Facebook and by link to be shared as broadly as possible; the culmination of 2019 events will be taking place as Hampton University students return to campus in August 2019 so getting this information out as soon as possible will increase exposure opportunities Robin noted City Council will honor this years “Vals and Sals” (valedictorians and salutatorians) at their May 22 evening meeting; and she has been wowed by Hampton City Schools student art displayed in the lobby of City Hall Toni announced Phoebus Dive Bar is now open in the former Old Town Tavern at 31 E Mellen Street; Partnership for a New Phoebus will hold their 2019 annual meeting 6-8p Monday, June 3 at The Hampton 34 E Mellen Street – Donnie Tuck, Glenn Oder and Charles Rigney will speak and light refreshments will be available Pamela distributed flyers for or announced the following events: Hampton Football 2019 Schedule; Hampton Nation Hall of Fame Golf Tournament Friday, May 31; Hampton University Athletics 2019 Hall of Fame Induction Gala featuring Darryl Skinner, Thomasina Busch Cunningham and Walter “Fuzzy” Ward on Saturday, June 1 at Hampton Marina Hotel; 105th Minister’s Conference and 85th Choir Director’s & Organists’ Guild Workshop will be held June 2- 7, 2019; Hampton Jazz Festival June 28-30, 20189 at the Coliseum; if anyone has a need to contact Pamela, her cell #770-310-6193 Beth noted Thomas Nelson Community College held its 50th Commencement Ceremony Thursday, May 9; five and ten-week summer classes will begin Monday, May 20 Jordan stated Hampton University held its 149th Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 12; summer sessions will begin for continuing students on May 28; he thanked the City and their partners for all their assistance during his tenure as a student; he announced the new Student Government Association President is Jonathan Mack (sgapresident@hamptonu.edu) and can be reached at cell phone #757-641-7645 Steve L. announced Harris Teeter in Willow Oaks is now open; a new Japanese Fusion restaurant is under construction at Peninsula Town Center; Boo Williams Sportsplex HVAC and track are undergoing improvements; Three Bowls of Color will open soon in Downtown Hampton; The Vanguard was featured in 2019 Coastal Virginia magazine for winning four gold, one silver and three bronze awards for their craft beer and spirits; Hampton Economic Development will hold their annual Business Appreciation Golf Tournament on Thursday, May 15 at the Hamptons Golf Course with food catered by County Grill and all are welcome to join them for lunch Rhonda Toll, representing Bryant & Stratton, noted that their commencement will be held at Hampton University on June 22; donations of professional wear are being collected for Gayle’s Closet; a Tie Breaker event is being developed for the fall where all participants will be instructed in how to tie a tie Mary showed the 2019 Commemorative Commission film highlighting the 1619 First African Landing and upcoming events surrounding the celebration of this historical event VI.
