Approve October 8 , 2019 Meeting Minutes – Due to a technical difficulty, approval of the minutes was tabled to the December 10, 2019 meeting V. Strategic Direction Subcommittees Goals & Objectives Update Communication s/Community E ngagement – the committee met November 5 where Mary noted Raymond made a Town & Gown presentation to University 101 to more than 500 Hampton University freshmen students and Kellie distributed 25+ Hampton City Schools’ volunteer opportunity folders; the upcoming 10th Annual HCS Boys Conference (open to boys grades 6-12 who attend Hampton City Schools) is still in need of volunteers 8a-230p Saturday, November 23 in the Hampton University Student Center; as a result of the Hampton City tour Page 1 / 4  T OWN AND G OWN C O M M I T T E E M E E T I N G 1 2 : 0 0 PM T U E S D A Y , N O V E M B E R 1 2 , 2 0 1 9 C OMMUNITY D EVELOPMENT C ONFERENCE R O O M H A M P T O N C ITY H ALL 2 2 L I N C O L N S T R E E T , 5 TH F L O O R MINUTES organized for the Bahamian students, Mary and Dr. Quimby discussed coordinating a recurring Hampton city tour for freshmen students; Mayor Tuck suggested a similar orientation tour for Thomas Nelson Community College and Bryant & Stratton students; that discussion prompted a suggestion to provide a student leadership tour; Mary mentioned she would like to introduce a Screen Cloud direct feed program at Hampton University to alert students of events happening within the city **Mary and Eric will collaborate on ways to implement the above ideas** VI. Key Updates Since the October 8, 2019 Town & Gown Committee Meeting Mayor Tuck reminded the group of Hampton’s State of the City address 1130a November 19 at Hampton Roads Convention Center Eric announced Bryant & Stratton will host their annual Open House event December 2 where there will be awards & prizes; classes begin January 15 Novelle stated Hampton University is anticipating that Bahamian students will remain enrolled for their 2nd semester; 1619 The Journey of a People: A New Musical will be performed at 8pm Friday, November 15 in Ogden Hall; the 4th Annual Hampton University Film Festival runs 9a-5p November 12-14; the Hampton University Players will perform Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare November 15-17 at Armstrong Hall Little Theater; and he invited the Town & Gown Committee members to attend basketball games during the 2019-2020 athletic season Mark announced his office is hosting an Angel Tree & Holiday Party for Hampton Boys & Girls Club and invited committee members to stop by the State Farm Agency at 910 W Mercury Boulevard to select an angel from the tree Steve Mallon announced the Lighted Boat Parade 6-830p Friday, December 13, and Holly Days & Parade Saturday, December 14 Toni stated Partnership for a New Phoebus will host a home decorating contest now through December 1st, winners will be announced during the 8th Annual Phoebus Holiday Illumination from 5-9p December 6 where Mayor Tuck will be reading to the children Ann thanked Mark Crump for his Back-to-School Supplies Drive; Phoebus Culinary Arts School students prepared and served lunch for the Bahamian Hampton University students as a part of their city tour; Community Priorities Workshop, an annual event engaging a representative sampling of a variety of community sectors for the purpose of sharing information and gathering Page 2 / 4  T OWN AND G OWN C O M M I T T E E M E E T I N G 1 2 : 0 0 PM T U E S D A Y , N O V E M B E R 1 2 , 2 0 1 9 C OMMUNITY D EVELOPMENT C ONFERENCE R O O M H A M P T O N C ITY H ALL 2 2 L I N C O L N S T R E E T , 5 TH F L O O R MINUTES community input, will take place Thursday, November 14, the focus theme this year is “creating safe and nurturing learning environments” Darren noted the Hampton 101 Key Spouses event was a success and featured lunch at Sentara Hospital where they have committed to being a community partner by offering meeting space available to the community Mary announced a special event “1619: When Destinies Collide” being performed by Hampton City Schools 6th graders, presented as a partnership between Fort Monroe Authority and Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau 3p November 22 at Fort Monroe Theater, while the event is free and open to the public, reservations are required; Academies of Hampton Hospitality and Tourism students will attend the 2019 VA1 Tourism Summit in Arlington, VA November 17 Robin recently interviewed a Thomas Nelson Community College film student and reminded everyone that there are open spots to interview Round Robin guests on any city-related topic or event Cpl Gallishaw announced he will be retiring at the end of 2019 and would like to recommend Cpl Stalnaker be added to this committee to aid in facilitating public events hosted by Town & Gown partnerships where Public Safety support is necessary Naima announced Thomas Nelson Community College’s Pop-Up Clothes Closet 8a-7p Tuesday, November 27 at Hampton Campus Espada Conference Room, donations will be accepted 8a-7p Monday, November 26 at Hampton Campus Espada Conference Room; the closet is open to all students, faculty and staff who may need cold weather gear; tickets are available online for the Performing Arts Department’s performances of Chicago November 15-17, 22-24 in the Mary T. Christian Auditorium on the Hampton Campus; spring classes will begin January 13, 2020 and include a new Career Studies Certificate for Small Unmanned Aircraft (Drone) Systems Flight Technician Nigel Allen, Thomas Nelson Community College Student Government Association Representative stated the Volunteer Community Service Scholarship program offers TNCC students the opportunity to earn $100 in tuition assistance per semester by volunteering to work 10 hours with an approved community agency or 15 hours assisting on campus.
