PENINSULA STADIUM AUTHORITY Minutes from June 4th, 2018
The meeting was called to order by Jim Wilson, Chair. Others in attendance included: Sallie Marchello,
Kevin Myers, Wayne Gomes, Frank Feagan, Lola Perkins and Linda Williams for the Board. Chris
Guthomson, Maintenance Manager for the City of Hampton. Heather Criner and Lauren Jones from
Newport New Shipbuilding. Darren Nicely, Henry Morgan and Hank Morgan from Community
Baseball.
Treasurers Report was presented and a motion was made by Sallie to approve them, Linda seconded
and the motion was approved by the Committee.
Kentucky Ave resurfacing by the City of Hampton has been completed and all were in agreement that
the City did a good job.
Site Plans for the Entryway Pavilion and the Beam work were out on display for the Committee
members to review. Pavilion plans should go to Procurement this month.
Capital Improvement regarding the New Sign. In our last meeting, the Committee approved up to
$60,000 for the new sign, however, the cost for the sign will actually be closer to $63,000. Jim sent an
email to Committee members to increase the amount and did receive a quorum to do so. In order to
make it official a motion was made by Sallie to increase the amount to $63,000 and seconded by Frank.
The motion was approved by the Committee. Progress has begun and every effort is being made to
have the sign up by the end of June.
Chris Guthomson, Maintenance Mgr with the City of Hampton briefed us on the progress of the clearing
of small trees and brush around the sign on Pembroke Ave. They are about a third of the way done.
Kevin informed the Committee that the City will be depositing money for the FY19, City Council
approved funding request for the Peninsula Stadium Authority ,into the account by July 1st.
Right Field Bull Pen Project, box seats are in and just need to be installed. Jim met with Peninsula
Pilots Management about a week after our last meeting. They have requested to reallocate the funds
that were already approved for the Right Field Bull Pen Project to go to two other projects they feel are
more important for the Stadium. 1) Batters Eye - they have met with Hercules Fence Company and
for $7500.00 can install the Batters Eye. This will eliminate night lights coming from the parking lot
towards the Batters. 2) Batters Cage by Beacon Sports in the amount of $4582.59. The Batters Cage
would be mounted past the locker rooms on the right hand side. It would help with the baseball
program to have a batting cage on both sides. The Batting cage on the 3rd base side will be
eliminated during the building construction. Jim motioned to reallocate the funds for the
dugout/padding/bench/rubber infield (not used) to go towards the Batters Cage and the Batters Eye,
Sallie seconded and the motion was approved by the Committee.
Jim had a meeting with the City Officials and Peninsula Pilots to discuss drain lines. It was discovered
that the 48" drain lines would be too costly. It was recommended to go back to the Engineers to see if
36" lines would accommodate the water run off from the Stadium. The City will get a response this
week and it looks favorable. The cost should be under $200,000. Work to start the 3rd week of
June. Also, $8565 to go towards the underground conduit for all the future lights in the parking lot.
The City is working with Basic Construction to asphalt the parking lot and it is set for August 15th so not
to interfere with the fans and the ball games.
We watched part of a recorded ball game from Friday evenings game made possible by the new Fiber
Optic Infrastructure system. There are 3 cameras, 3rd Base Line, 1st Base Line and Center.
Henry asked that we reimburse the Pilots for electrical work that was not expected but necessary in
order to put up the Center camera. Jim made a motion to approve the $714 requested by Henry,
Sallie seconded and the motion was approved by the Committee.
New Business - Frank would like to see some handicap seating, or an area designated for handicap
seating and improved handicap accessible restroom.
Meeting was adjourned by Jim.
Next meeting will be Monday, July 2nd.
