HENDERSON BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION ON EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AND YOUTH OPPORTUNITY REGULAR MEETING November 16, 2016 MINUTES I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity was called to order by Acting Chairperson Brooklyn Darmody at 4:06 p.m. in the City Hall Annex Conference Room, 280 Water Street, Henderson, Nevada. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Recording Secretary, Tina Sigman, confirmed the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity had been noticed in compliance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the Agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, the Multigenerational Center, the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, Fire Station No. 86, the Nevada Public Notice Website, the City of Henderson Website, and by electronically mailing a copy of the Agenda to everyone appearing thereon the Agenda Master Electronic Mailing List. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no comments presented by the public. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA (For Possible Action) (Motion) Ms. Bolshazy introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. Mr. Underwood seconded. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Acting Chair Darmody declared the motion carried. V. NEW BUSINESS NB-4 MINUTES OCTOBER 19, 2016 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION For Possible Action. RECOMMENDATION: Adopt Adopt minutes of October 19, 2016 (Motion) Ms. Bolshazy introduced a motion to adopt the minutes as presented, seconded by Mr. Underwood. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Acting Chair Darmody declared the motion carried. NB-5 COLLEGE NIGHT 2017 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION For Possible Action. RECOMMENDATION: Approve Adopt minutes of October 7, 2017 (Motion) Ms. Bolshazy introduced a motion to schedule College Night 2017 for October 7, 2017 from 1:00PM to 3:00PM at the Henderson Multigenerational Center. Ms. White seconded. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Acting Chair Darmody declared the motion carried.  Blue Ribbon Commission Page 3 of 5 Wednesday, November 16, 2016 - Minutes NB-6 REVIEW TRUNK OR TREAT AT BLACK MOUNTAIN RECREATION CENTER ON OCTOBER 27, 2016 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION The Commissioners who participated in Trunk or Treat agreed that it was a community event worth attending. All found it to be a rewarding and fun opportunity. Ms. Bozworth created a power point of photographs from that evening. Ms. Gann suggested the commissioners write a letter to the coordinator of this event at Black Mountain Recreation Center offering feedback, such as the desire for Food Trucks. The Commission agreed to participate again next year. VI. UNFINISHED BUSINESS UB-1 BLUE STAR MOTHERS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY NOVEMBER 28 THROUGH DECEMBER 2, 2016 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION For Possible Action. RECOMMENDATION: Approve Decide the date and time for Commissioners to attend this opportunity, and which members will commit their time to this endeavor. (Motion) Ms. Bolshazy introduced a motion to participate in Blue Star Mothers volunteer opportunity on November 29, 2016 from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Acting Chair Darmody declared the motion carried. Mr. Underwood, Ms. Driscoll, Ms. Darmody, and Ms. Bolshazy agreed to this committed time. Members will wear their Blue Ribbon Polo shirts. Commissioners may volunteer at any time during the week, however. All members may collect donations listed on the forms. Both Ms. Darmody and Ms. Bolshazy will ensure members remember to attend and will lead the pursuit of collecting donations. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 4 of 5 Wednesday, November 16, 2016 - Minutes UB-2 LEADERSHIP DAY 2017 – T-SHIRT COLOR, GRAPHIC, AND DESIGN PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION For Possible Action. RECOMMENDATION: Approve Select a t-shirt color and potential graphic and design for Leadership Day. The t-shirt color selected is light purple, Gildan Soft Style, white font. The graphic on front will include a flesh colored flexed arm with capitalized “DO” above and “SOMETHING” beneath. The back of the shirt in sentence case will read “No one can do everything, but everyone can…” in white font. The sleeves will include the Be Kind logo and the Blue Ribbon Commission Logo on either sleeve. Staff will request that Marketing create the graphic for display in time for next meeting for a vote. UB-3 LEADERSHIP DAY 2017 – INVITATIONS FOR EVENT PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION For Possible Action. RECOMMENDATION: Approve Ms. Gann recommended that the invitations be completely ready before the end of December so invitations can be sent in January. Ms. Wong had already added Leadership Day 2017 to the CCSD master calendar. (Motion) Mr. Underwood introduced a motion to accept the design as displayed on the white board: One single sheet flier type of invitation with a similar graphic as the t-shirts with the theme on the bottom. The font will be black and the theme in the footer will be in purple. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 5 of 5 Wednesday, November 16, 2016 - Minutes VII CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS Attorney Michael Oh reviewed the changes that had been made to the Blue Ribbon Commission Ordinance. The ordinance now allows for a minimum of 15 members and a maximum of 21 members. There is no longer a limitation of a maximum two Commissioners from each school. Ms. Gann advised that it is the goal to have all Henderson schools represented but also to not have a focus on the differing schools – to focus more on individuality and a team environment. Commissioners discussed the difficulty with the date of Leadership Day 2017 due to conflicting events such as “AP Season” and “Zone”. Ms. Gann will see if the dates can be changed with the Convention Center. This topic will be added to the next agenda. Ms. Gann announced that Mr. Tim Schneider with Soaring Eagle Enterprises has agreed to donate one hour of keynote for Leadership Day. Acting Chair Darmody reminded commissioners to consider gifts for the speakers. VIII. SET NEXT MEETING The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on December 14, 2016 at 4:00p.m. in the Recreation Conference Room of the City Hall Annex. IX. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no comments presented by the public. X.
