CITY OF HENDERSON BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION ON EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AND YOUTH OPPORTUNITY SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, September 6, 2017 I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity was called to order by Vice-Chairman Brooklyn Darmody at 4:00 p.m., in the City Hall Annex Conference Room, 280 Water Street, Henderson, Nevada. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Tina Sigman, Recording Secretary, confirmed the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity had been noticed in compliance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the Agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, the Multigenerational Center, the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, Fire Station No. 86, the Nevada Public Notice Website, and the City of Henderson Website, and by electronically mailing a copy of the Agenda to everyone appearing thereon the Agenda Master Electronic Mailing List. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments presented. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA (For Possible Action) (Motion) Miss White introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Vice-Chairman Darmody declared the motion carried. V. NEW BUSINESS NB-1 MINUTES JUNE 21, 2017 Public Works, Parks and Recreation Adopt minutes of June 21, 2017. (Motion) Mr. Adamo introduced a motion to adopt the minutes of June 21, 2017, as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Vice-Chairman Darmody declared the motion carried. NB-2 INTRODUCE NEW MEMBERS OF BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION Public Works, Parks and Recreation Introductions of new Blue Ribbon Commission Members: Serenity Aleman- Reyes, Avrey Callis, Samantha Elliot, Zayli Jackson, Josephine Nguyen, and Michael Mutzhaus. All Commission members and staff introduced themselves and noted their favorite television show. NB-3 BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION CHAIRPERSON AND VICE-CHAIRPERSON ELECTIONS Public Works, Parks and Recreation Discuss process and requirements for the elections of Chair and Vice-Chair positions that will occur during the September 20, 2017, Regular Meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission. Staff explained that any members interested in the Chair or Vice-Chair position should be prepared to give a presentation at the next meeting. Please inform staff if you intend to give a PowerPoint presentation. Blue Ribbon Commission Special Meeting Page 3 of 4 Wednesday, September 6, 2017 – Minutes NB-4 COLLEGE & BEYOND....LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL Public Works, Parks and Recreation Discuss details, including institutions that have agreed to attend. Ms. Gann reported that this event is scheduled for October 7, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Commissioners should plan to arrive at noon to set up. The City’s Public Information Officer, Kim Becker, will provide information for parents and students to apply for scholarships. It was noted that several colleges and technical institutions will be represented. Nevada State College is not yet confirmed. Miss Callis will contact representatives from the military to see if they can attend this event. Students were asked to present more suggestions at the next meeting. Fliers were distributed to commissioners for posting at each of his or her respective school. NB-5 TRUNK OR TREAT - OCTOBER 27, 2017 - 6:00 P.M. TO 8:30 P.M. Public Works, Parks and Recreation Selection of theme and discussion on details of event to include meeting location, dress code, decoration, and items to be distributed to the public attendees. There was a consensus for a superhero theme. Mr. Mutzhaus will invite volunteer “superheroes” to attend the event on behalf of Blue Ribbon Commission. Mr. Mutzhaus may have a contact whom will donate comic books to hand out to participants. Mr. Adamo advised that handing out paper masks to participants was popular last year, and recommended repeating for this year. Vice-Chair Darmody volunteered to utilize her car for the event. Commissioners should either dress in superhero costume or Blue Ribbon polo. NB-6 BLUE STAR MOTHERS STOCKING STUFFING EVENT AT HENDERSON CONVENTION CENTER Public Works, Parks and Recreation Discuss date, time, duties, and dress code for the Blue Star Mothers Stocking Stuffing Event at Henderson Convention Center. A brief discussion ensued regarding what takes place at this event. Dress code is Blue Ribbon polo and casual slacks or jeans. Blue Ribbon Commission Special Meeting Page 4 of 4 Wednesday, September 6, 2017 – Minutes NB-7 LEADERSHIP DAY - APRIL 12, 2018 Public Works, Parks and Recreation Overview of mission, goals, duties, dress code, and expectations for Leadership Day 2018. Commissioners should inform his or her respective school of this event so that it will be placed on the school calendar. VI. CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS There were no Chairman\member comments presented. VII. SET NEXT MEETING The next meeting was set for September 20, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. VIII. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments presented. IX.
