CITY OF HENDERSON BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION ON EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AND YOUTH OPPORTUNITY REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, October 18, 2017 I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity was called to order by Chair Brooklyn Darmody at 4:02 p.m., in the City Hall Annex Conference Room, 280 Water Street, Henderson, Nevada. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Tina Sigman, Recording Secretary, confirmed the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity had been noticed in compliance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the Agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, the Multigenerational Center, the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, Fire Station No. 86, the Nevada Public Notice Website, and the City of Henderson Website, and by electronically mailing a copy of the Agenda to everyone appearing thereon the Agenda Master Electronic Mailing List. PUBLIC COMMENT The Blue Ribbon Commissioners welcomed Keiana Williams and Genaro Marcial-Lorza as the two newest members of Blue Ribbon Commission. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA (For Possible Action) (Motion) Mr. Zeller introduced a motion to accept the agenda as amended to hear NB-9 as the first item on the agenda, seconded by Miss White. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chair Darmody declared the motion carried. V. UNFINISHED BUSINESS UB-1 REVIEW COLLEGE AND BEYOND - LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL EVENT THAT WAS HELD ON OCTOBER 7, 2017 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Review College and Beyond - Life After High School Event at Henderson Multigenerational Center on October 7, 2017. Note: UB-1 was heard following NB-9. The Commission determined the event a success. There were 35 students in attendance with approximately 65 family members. The feedback was positive, and the Commission agreed it is an event worth continuing. UB-2 TRUNK OR TREAT EVENT - OCTOBER 26, 2017 AT BLACK MOUNTAIN RECREATION CENTER PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and review plans for event theme, supplies, and commissioners who plan to attend, and approve any plan changes. Ms. Gann communicated that the department spent approximately $200.00 on decorations for Trunk or Treat. Mr. Mutzhaus stated that there will be five or six superheroes handing out comic books to children. The Commission will request two spaces – one for photo opportunities and the other to pass out candy. Commissioners should wear either superhero costume or Blue Ribbon Polo shirts, and should arrive at approximately 3:00 p.m. if he or she can assist with decorating. Otherwise, each commissioner / Super Hero should arrive no later than 5:30 p.m. for the event or any time later to help with clean up. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 3 of 6 Wednesday, October 18, 2017 – Regular Meeting Minutes UB-3 BLUE STAR MOTHERS STOCKING STUFFING EVENT AT HENDERSON CONVENTION CENTER ON NOVEMBER 29, 2017 AT 4:00P.M. PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and approve the process to collect donations from each school to help support this event. Commissioners shall collect items to place in stockings for military troops overseas. Miss Nelson mentioned that hard candy is a popular item. Ms. Gann mentioned socks are especially needed. Chair Darmody charged commissioners with the task of approaching administrators at each respective school to designate a collection space and method of advertising for collections. UB-4 LEADERSHIP DAY 2018 - THEME PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and approve a theme for Leadership Day 2018. Chair Darmody suggested that the commission combine the themes of “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader” with “Characters of Leadership”. The focus will be on the “Hero’s Journey”, highlighting characters from books/movies. For example, which characteristics does Harry Potter have that proves leadership qualities and which characteristics does he lack. (Motion) Vice Chair Callis introduced a motion to have the Leadership Day 2018 theme as “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader,” seconded by Mr. Marcial-Lorza. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chair Darmody declared the motion carried. UB-5 LEADERSHIP DAY 2018 - T-SHIRT LOGO AND GRAPHICS PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and explore options for t-shirt logo and graphics for Leadership Day 2018. Chair Darmody advised that all commissioners should think about t-shirt color and designs for Leadership Day and be ready to offer complete ideas at the next meeting. Suggestions included: - Participating school names printed on the back of the shirts in lieu of printing on the sleeves. - Baseball tee - One color on a plain shirt Blue Ribbon Commission Page 4 of 6 Wednesday, October 18, 2017 – Regular Meeting Minutes - Books as stairs with leadership titles or characteristics of leaders Mr. Zeller called dibs on the Golden Snitch if a Quidditch Match is played. UB-6 LEADERSHIP DAY 2018 - KEYNOTE SPEAKER PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and explore potential options for the Keynote Speaker for Leadership Day 2018. Miss Jackson volunteered to ask Andre Agassi to keynote speak at Leadership Day. Mr. Agassi is the Commission’s first choice. Miss Jackson will request services to be donated and will evaluate the time frame to be determined by Mr. Agassi. UB-7 LEADERSHIP DAY 2018 - GIVEAWAY BAGS AND T-SHIRTS PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and explore options for items to place in giveaway bags for Leadership Day 2018. Chair Darmody requested that each commissioner work on obtaining donations for giveaway bags now so that organizations can budget for potential donations ahead of time. The quantity should be 300. VI. NEW BUSINESS NB-8 MINUTES BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING SEPTEMBER 20, 2017 Public Works, Parks and Recreation Adopt Blue Ribbon Commission Regular Meeting Minutes of September 20, 2017. (Motion) Mr. Mutzhaus introduced a motion to adopt the minutes of September 20, 2017, seconded by Mr. Marcial-Lorza. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chair Darmody declared the motion carried. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 5 of 6 Wednesday, October 18, 2017 – Regular Meeting Minutes NB-9 HENDERSON DEVELOPMENT OVERVIEW AND DEMOGRAPHICS CITY OF HENDERSON - ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TOURISM BARBRA COFFEE, DIRECTOR OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TOURISM PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Presentation of Henderson Development Overview by City of Henderson Economic Development and Tourism Department. Note: NB-9 was discussed first. Barbra Coffee, Director of Economic Development and Tourism, presented an overview of Henderson Economics, Demographics, Development Services, and the attractive quality of life businesses and families can expect in Henderson. She additionally invited each commissioner to become a part of the Young Entrepreneurs Alliance. NB-10 SET 2018 DATE FOR COLLEGE AND BEYOND - LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Set 2018 date for College and Beyond - Life After High School. (Motion) Mr. Marcial-Lorza introduced a motion to set College and Beyond - Life After High School for Saturday, September 29, 2018, seconded by Miss Aleman-Reyes. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chair Darmody declared the motion carried. VII. CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS Mr. Adamo suggested the Commission consider one of the businesses Ms. Coffee highlighted in her presentation for the Blue Ribbon Commission outing. Mr. Adamo additionally suggested that the Commission consider an alternative source for catering Leadership Day. Ms. Gann asked the Commission to share with his or her respective schools/fellow classmates that the City of Henderson is recruiting now for Recreation Assistants and Senior Recreation Assistants for next summer. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 6 of 6 Wednesday, October 18, 2017 – Regular Meeting Minutes VIII. SET NEXT MEETING Chair Darmody set the next meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission for November 15, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. IX. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments. X.
