CITY OF HENDERSON SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING AGENDA Wednesday, October 18, 2017 I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Liz Baldizan called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m., at the City of Henderson, City Hall Council Chambers Conference Room, 240 Water Street, Henderson, Nevada 89015. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL The Board Secretary confirmed the Regular Meeting had been noticed in compliance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the Agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, the Multigenerational Center, the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, Fire Station No. 86, the Nevada Public Notice Website, the City of Henderson Website, and by emailing a copy of the Agenda to everyone appearing thereon on the Agenda Master Mailing List. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments presented. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA (For Possible Action) (Motion) Ms. McEvers introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Baldizan declared the motion carried. V. CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS Chairman Baldizan recognized Gina Jolliff, Richard Berman and Francine Fields for representing the commission and attending the Sun City Anthem Health Fair on September 23, 2017. Chairman Baldizan mentioned it was a great experience, built awareness and they received positive feedback from attendees. VI. NEW BUSINESS NB-1 MINUTES SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING SEPTEMBER 20, 2017 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting minutes of September 20, 2017. (Motion) Ms. Smith introduced a motion to adopt the minutes of September 20, 2017, as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Baldizan declared the motion carried. NB-2 PRESENTATION AARP AGE FRIENDLY APPLICATION UPDATE PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Shelly Labay, Sr. Planner for Community Development Long Range Planning will present the City's AARP Age Friendly Application and Action Plan for discussion only. Ms. Labay informed the commissioners that in 2015 the City was accepted as an age friendly and livable community and provided an update. Ms. Labay also reviewed the process, what the City’s role is, housing options, future plans as well as what the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission can do. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 3 of 5 Wednesday, October 18, 2017 – Minutes Currently, they are waiting for final approval from AARP, followed by City Council approval in order to implement strategies. The Henderson Senior Summit is scheduled for January 30, 2018 and will have guest speakers on senior needs and services at Heritage Park Senior Facility from 8:30 a.m. – noon. A brief discussion ensued; in response to commissioners’ questions, Ms. Labay will get a copy of the approved plan to the commissioners; agreed to have the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission speak or have a presence at the Henderson Senior Summit; that the role of the commission did not need to be solidified prior to council approval. NB-3 PRESENTATION AARP SOCIAL MEDIA CLASS PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Nancy Flagg of AARP will provide information about an AARP class she has created that deals with social media. Ms. Flagg, a volunteer for AARP Nevada and HopeLink of Southern Nevada, informed the group about AARP offering free social media classes this winter and spring which includes: Beginning Facebook, Intermediate Facebook, Introduction to Twitter, Getting to Know Your iPad and Getting to Know Your Android Tablet. Ms. Flagg is also offering a new class on November 17, 2017, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the AARP Nevada State Office located at 5820 S. Eastern Avenue, Suite 100, Las Vegas, NV 89119 on Preserving Your Digital Legacy. This class will provide an overview, issues and steps on how to preserve your digital legacy in the event of long-term illness, incapacitation or death and help you make your wishes known in writing on preserving your bank accounts, retirement accounts, medical records, email/text, social files, digital/electronic files. You do not need to be a member to attend. NB-4 ATTEND AND OR PARTICIPATE IN UPCOMING EVENTS PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commissioners will discuss and possibly approve whether the commissioners will attend and or participate in upcoming community programs or events. Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, clarified that this item is to coordinate who from the group is attending upcoming events, networking, setting up and handling collateral. If you have any events you would like to add for consideration, feel free to contact Chairman Baldizan, Corey Clark or Karie Teruya to put it on the agenda. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 4 of 5 Wednesday, October 18, 2017 – Minutes A brief discussion ensued regarding who is planning on attending the Veterans Day Ceremony and Talk Shop with Cops. (Motion) Ms. Smith introduced a motion to have commission presence at the Veterans Day Ceremony and Talk Shop with Cops. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Baldizan declared the motion carried. NB-5 COMMUNITY RESPONSE FORM PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION This item was heard before NB-4. Commissioners will discuss and possibly approve community response form for concerns, challenges and/or suggestions in the senior community to gain information from community events. Chairman Baldizan asked the commissioners for their feedback in reviewing the community response form to use at events as a tool to solicit ideas and feedback from the community. A brief discussion ensued and Mr. Clark stated that during City events, vendors are not allowed to collect contact information from patrons, however, they can hand out information on their business and patrons can decide to call them for more information. Mr. Clark will bring a draft to the next meeting. No action was taken. NB-6 STAFF REPORT PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Recreation Manager, Corey Clark, will give an update of the Meals on Wheels program and on the City's senior services. Mr. Clark provided an update on the following senior services: Meals on Wheels, Mayor March’s March On event and the Harvest Festival. VII. PUBLIC COMMENT Marianne Stanger, Henderson Seniors Auxiliary, reported on the following activities: Valentine’s homeless project for next year and asked if groups were interested in partnering with them; Giving Tree; Freddy’s Fundraiser and a bake sale tomorrow. Chairman Baldizan introduced Michael Oh, Assistant City Attorney III, who was assigned to the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission and he introduced himself. IX.
