CITY OF HENDERSON BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION ON EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AND YOUTH OPPORTUNITY REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, November 14, 2018 I. CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Keiana Williams called the Regular Meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity to order at 4:00 p.m., in the City Hall Annex, Rebel Conference Room, 280 Water Street, Henderson, Nevada. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Rayna Booker, Administrative Assistant III, confirmed the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity had been noticed in compliance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the Agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, the Multigenerational Center, the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, Fire Station No. 86, the Nevada Public Notice Website, and the City of Henderson Website, and by electronically mailing a copy of the Agenda to everyone appearing thereon the Agenda Master Electronic Mailing List. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments presented. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA (For Possible Action) (Motion) Mr. Scott introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairperson Williams declared the motion carried. V. UNFINISHED BUSINESS UB-1 TRUNK OR TREAT 2018 PARKS AND RECREATION Review the Trunk or Treat Event from October 25, 2018. It was noted that no complaints were received, and the setup was good. A suggestion was made that students should dress up or in costume at this event in future years. UB-2 BLUE STAR MOTHER'S STOCKING STUFFING EVENT PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss days and times Blue Ribbon Commission Members will be volunteering for the event occurring November 26th through November 29th, 2018. Students volunteered to attend this event for three days, and selected times. It was noted they can wear casual attire including Blue Ribbon Polo shirts, name tags, and jeans. The location for this event is at the Convention Center. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 3 of 6 Wednesday, November 14, 2018 – Minutes UB-3 LEADERSHIP DAY 2018 - THEME PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and recommend a theme for Leadership Day 2019. The following themes were suggested:  You are confined only to the walls you build yourself  You are your only limit  Believe in the power of yet  Break your own walls  No walls, No limits  Break down barriers A suggestion was made to hand out laminated cards with variations of quotes. Through a voting process of elimination, there was a consensus to select “No walls, No limits” as the theme for Leadership Day 2019. (Motion) Miss Aleman-Reyes introduced a motion to select “No walls, No limits” as the theme for Leadership Day 2019. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Williams declared the motion carried. UB-4 LEADERSHIP DAY 2019 - T-SHIRT PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and explore options for t-shirt color, logo, and graphics for Leadership Day 2019. There was a consensus to select brick red for the shirt color. Graphic ideas included: bricks and a partially knocked-down wall, and Wreck-it Ralph character knocking down a wall. It was suggested the theme be incorporated into a broken wall. Ms. Gann will submit shirt information to marketing staff, who will prepare a mock design for the members to review at the next meeting. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 4 of 6 Wednesday, November 14, 2018 – Minutes UB-5 LEADERSHIP DAY 2019 - GIVEAWAY BAGS PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and explore options for items to place in giveaway bags for Leadership Day 2019. The following suggestions were made: Order fanny packs rather than string backpacks, and giveaways to include lanyards, coupons, candy, water bottles (Motion) Mr. Zeller introduced a motion to allow Ms. Gann to price check the fanny packs and backpacks, and to price check giveaway items. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Williams declared the motion carried. UB-6 LEADERSHIP DAY 2019 - WORKSHOP GROUPS PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and recommend workshop group assignments for Leadership Day 2019. The following two work groups were identified: Group 1: Avrey Callis, Serenity Aleman-Reyes, Bradley Vidal, Christian Scott, Caitlyn Shirley-Tecumseh, and Lauren Fairchild. Group 2: Zayli Jackson, Macey Reeves Jennifer Pride, Samantha Elliot, Renea Buckles, and Daniel Klinger. It was suggested to schedule a mock run of the presentations before Leadership Day to make sure students are prepared. Adult members will attend the mock up presentations to mentor and facilitate. Contact Ms. Gann to schedule the location and times for the mock presentations at a City facility. (Motion Miss Aleman-Reyes introduced a motion to accept the group assignments for Leadership Day 2019. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. NEW BUSINESS NB-7 MINUTES BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING OCTOBER 17, 2018 PARKS AND RECREATION Blue Ribbon Commission Regular Meeting Minutes of October 17, 2018. (Motion) Miss Davis introduced a motion to adopt the minutes of October 17, 2018, as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairperson Williams declared the motion carried. VII. CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS Ms. Gann will help determine meeting space for the groups, times and days, as well as scheduling a facilitator. Students were reminded to not exceed a quorum when meeting in their groups. At the next meeting, students will discuss program details for each group and produce an outline of the workshop. Students were asked to think about the following issues to be discussed at the next meeting: Ice breaker games, workshop themes, operation of the workshop, supplies, and workshop setup. Students were reminded to include Ms. Gann in all group emails. Rayna Booker, Administrative Assistant III, was introduced as the new administrative secretary for this board. VIII. SET NEXT MEETING The next meeting was set for December 19, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. IX.
