Commission members to discuss and approve a subject for an article would be
included in the weekly report at Heritage Park Senior Facility.
Chairman Hyde said he met with Lisa Sich, representing the Henderson
Community Foundation, to discuss a transportation component and trying to get
a donation of $5,000.00 to get started. He reported that a non-profit
organization called The Foundation Assisting Seniors is willing to donate money
for this effort; however, he questioned the legality of one non-profit organization
donating to another non-profit organization.
Nechole Garcia, Assistant City Attorney I, commented that she does not know
of any conflicts, but will research this issue and report at the next meeting.
Ms. Baldizan distributed and reviewed a handout entitled “Senior Newswire,”
and suggested that information in this newsletter can be provided to patrons at
the Heritage Senior Center. She offered to will follow up the outlet who
publishes this newsletter to see if they will give consent to share this
information.
7 STAFF REPORT
PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION
Recreation Services Manager, Corey Clark will give a staff report and an update
on the Heritage Park Senior Facility. He will also give a follow up to concerns
that were presented by Vice Chair, Duane Ruliffson during the July 16, 2014,
meeting.
Regarding an issue brought up at the last meeting about seniors being tired of
sales pitches, Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, apologized for the
misunderstanding and noted that the comment was taken out of context. He
stated that staff wants feedback, support, and ideas from the Commission.
Mr. Clark reported that the United Riders (formerly ITN) transportation
enrollment is at 90 and continues to increase. He noted that there are problems
with new drivers not meeting the needs of folks using the program, such as
helping them on and off the vehicles.
Ms. McEvers said she hears complaints that some people miss the bus

because it is coming early, no reservation found, and people are waiting hours
for the bus. She noted that the driver of the blue van does not help seniors off
the vehicle.
Mr. Clark noted that City staff is communicating issues with United Riders and
they are resolving issues. He commented that Fran Smith can discuss these
concerns at the next meeting.
Mr. Clark reviewed the Heritage Park Senior Facility July 2014 Report. He
noted that staff is working with Gavin Walker to host an exhibition to display art
work from the Facility at his office on September 11, 2014. Staff is organizing
an excursion from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and refreshments will be provided.
The address for the location is 1368 Paseo Verde, Suite 200B. Mr. Clark noted
that some of the artwork will be for sale and frames and gift bags will be given
out or raffled.
Regarding the Senior Newswire, Mr. Clark noted staff may need printed articles
which fit in the existing patron newsletter. He suggested that the commission
could select one of the topics from the Senior Newswire to be used as a
reference in the patron newsletter. He suggested this issue needs to be
discussed further.
Regarding low attendance at the Facility, Mr. Clark noted that participation
improved slightly since last month’s report and the return of seniors who travel
during the summer (snowbirds) is expected to increase participation.
VII. CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS
Ms. McEvers commented that the City of Henderson Public Works/Parks and
Recreation Department is undergoing a comprehensive review of pricing
structure. She expressed concern that a meeting to review information is
scheduled at the Henderson Multigenerational Facility; however, many seniors
cannot travel to this location.
Mr. Clark commented that he could not recall the locations the meeting was
being offered and would report back to the commission with more information.
Chairman Hyde asked that this item be on the next agenda for discussion.
