CITY OF HENDERSON SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES November 19, 2014 I. CALL TO ORDER Vice Chairman Duane Ruliffson called the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting to order at 5:40 p.m., at 240 Water Street, Henderson City Hall, in the Council Chambers Conference Room. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Joanne Wershba, Administrative Assistant III, confirmed the meeting had been posted in accordance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, Multigenerational Center, Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, and Fire Station No. 86. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no comments presented by the public. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF THE AGENDA (Motion) Liz Baldizan introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. NEW BUSINESS 1 MINUTES OCTOBER 15, 2014 PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION Adopt the October 15, 2014, Senior Citizens Advisory Commission minutes. (Motion) Mr. Flake introduced a motion to adopt the minutes of September 17, 2014, as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Vice Chairman Ruliffson declared the motion carried. 2 SUCCESSFUL AGING EXPO PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission will discuss collaboration with the organizers of the Successful Aging Expo, to be held on January 31, 2015. Corey Clark announced that the City’s Senior Services will have a booth at the Expo staffed by City personnel. He will provide brochures from the Senior Advisory Commission. Ms. McEvers will check into resources regarding contact names for senior issues that she can forward to Melissa McCabe from the Review Journal. It was noted that the Clear Council Law Group will have a booth available to assist seniors with free wills. 3 EDUCATIONAL FORUM REGARDING IRS SCAM PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION The Senior Advisory Commission members will discuss the possibility of holding a forum to discuss the IRS scam as well as other scams encountered by seniors. No discussion occurred at this time. This item will be continued on next month’s agenda. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 3 November 19, 2014 – Minutes 4 HENDERSON SENIORS' AUXILIARY PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION A member of the Henderson Seniors' Auxiliary will give a report for October. Judy Boyer, Chairman for the Henderson Seniors Auxiliary, gave an update on the Henderson Seniors’ Auxiliary. During the months of October and November, they had a bake sale, boutique, and two yard sales, which netted approximately $1,650. They moved their storage unit to a larger unit with the help of a four Basic High School students so they are able to store more donations of used items. They were just given 50 cases of Ocean Spray juices, so they have room for that as well. The Auxiliary is currently involved with a few of projects: they are assembling “blessing bags” with essential toiletry items that they will be donating to the homeless; they are selling raffle tickets for 2 bicycles that were recently donated; and they are also sharing the table with the City at the Expo in January. 5 INFORMATIONAL SENIOR ISSUES PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members to discuss and approve subjects for articles from the "Senior Newswire" that would be included in the weekly report at Heritage Park Senior Facility. Ms. Baldizan submitted an article from the Senior Newswire which was printed in the Heritage Park Senior Facility’s weekly report. An article will be submitted on a monthly basis. 6 POTENTIAL LIVING WILLS PROGRAM AT THE HENDERSON SENIOR FACILITY. PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss process for bringing a Living Wills program from law firms or other service providers to the Henderson Senior Facility. There will be no further discussion on this item. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 4 November 19, 2014 – Minutes 7 STAFF REPORT PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION Recreation Services Manager, Corey Clark, will give a staff report and an update on the City's Senior Services. Mr. Clark announced that the café at the Heritage Park Senior Facility (HPSF) reached a milestone of achieving 99% cost recovery. He reported that the Thanksgiving meal will be served at HPSF and the Downtown Senior Center and approximately 1,100 attendees are expected between both locations and the Meals on Wheels program. He invited everyone to attend if they can. He also announced that new art pieces will be displayed at the gallery and they have arranged two buses for transporting the seniors to the gallery. VII. CHAIRMAN/MEMBER COMMENTS JoAnn McEvers presented a flyer regarding a Friday forum at the Downtown Senior Center (DSC). Mr. Clark reported that the flyer contained information that was not current. He will check to see that the flyers are no longer being displayed at the (DSC). VIII. SET NEXT MEETING The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on December 17, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers Conference Room of City Hall. IX. PUBLIC COMMENT Judy Boyer suggested that she would like to see more publicity regarding the activities and programs offered at the Downtown Senior Center. She indicated that a number of members on the Auxiliary are not aware of the events at this location. Mr. Clark pointed out that most of the activities at this facility are advertised in the Henderson Happenings. X.
