CITY OF HENDERSON SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES August 17, 2016 I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Dan Hyde called the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting to order at 5:30 p.m., at 240 Water Street, Henderson City Hall, in the Council Chambers Conference Room. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Monica Rivera, Administrative Assistant II, confirmed the meeting had been posted in accordance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, Multigenerational Center, Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, and Fire Station No. 86. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no comments presented by the public. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF THE AGENDA (Motion) Ms. Baldizan introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Hyde declared the motion carried. V. NEW BUSINESS NB-1 MINUTES JULY 20, 2016 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Adopt the minutes of July 20, 2016 meeting. (Motion) Ms. Smith introduced a motion to adopt the minutes of the July 20, 2016 meeting, as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Hyde declared the motion carried. NB-2 HELP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Jim Hutchison will conduct a presentation on community resources available to seniors. This item was heard immediately following NB-6. Jim Hutchison, Outreach for HELP of Southern Nevada, introduced Thomas McClain, Director of Operations for HELP. Mr. McClain presented information on services provided by HELP to assist individuals and families throughout Southern Nevada. He focused his presentation on their weatherization program. Mr. McClain informed the commission that the weatherization program offers assistance to low-income families. He discussed the benefits of weatherizing a home. Mr. Hutchison advised that all contractors used to weatherize a residence are licensed and bonded. He is hoping that members of the commission spread the word of the services HELP can bring to seniors in the community. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 3 August 17, 2016 – Minutes NB-3 HENDERSON SENIORS' AUXILIARY PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION A member of the Henderson Seniors' Auxiliary will give the monthly report. Maryanne Stanger, Henderson Seniors’Auxiliary gave the following update:  The Auxiliary is continuing to work on their business plan and sponsorship kits.  Harvest Fest is October 1, 2016. The Auxiliary invited the Commission to share a booth with them.  The Auxiliary is not hosting any yard sales because they have not received any donated items. Please let them know if you have anything to donate.  The Auxiliary is looking for bakers for their upcoming bake sales in November and December.  The Auxiliary is working on a Review Journal article that will be published in the Henderson View. NB-4 MEDICARE PRESENTATION BY DAVID KAREL PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION David Karel will conduct a presentation on Medicare issues. David Karel of David Karel Group informed the commission that Medicare open enrollment starts October 15 to December 7, 2016. He asked the commission to support him in helping educate seniors on Medicare issues. Chairman Hyde asked for an item to be placed on the September agenda for the commission to vote on the issue. NB-5 COMMISSION PRIORITIES THROUGH CALENDAR YEAR 2016 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will review commission's 2016-2017 priorities. This item was heard immediately following NB-9. Corey Clark reviewed the commission’s priorities. Fran Smith questioned if the council members had to approve the priorities. Chairman Hyde responded that they did not need to be approved by them, and reminded the commission that the members of the council review the backup and minutes of the meeting. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 4 August 17, 2016 – Minutes NB-6 CAPTION CALL PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Chairman Hyde will provide information on a program called Caption Call. Chairman Hyde provided the commission with information and background regarding a program called Caption Call. Caption Call is a free program that provides telephone service for individuals with hearing loss. Chairman Hyde encouraged members to spread the word about the program. NB-7 AGE FRIENDLY HENDERSON PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will be provided with an update from the stakeholders meeting. This item was heard immediately following NB-1. Chairman Hyde had nothing to report on this item. The next Age Friendly meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. NB-8 ADULT DEVELOPMENT AND AGING AT NEVADA STATE COLLEGE PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Liz Baldizan will provide information on a new course at Nevada State College. This item was heard immediately following NB-4. Liz Baldizan presented information about a service learning internship program that she is working with at Nevada State College. The program earns students three academic credits to meet with home bound senior citizens in the community. The students will be able to visit with a senior and learn about their life story, while providing companionship. Ms. Baldizan is looking for students interested in participating. She urged commission members to spread the word about the program. NB-9 SENIOR TRANSPORTATION PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will provide planning updates on the October 13, 2016 senior transportation forum. This item was heard immediately following NB-7. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 5 August 17, 2016 – Minutes Chairman Hyde informed the commission that Councilman Sam Bateman and Councilwoman Debra March will be in attendance. He asked that the commission members invite their council person to the forum. NB-10 STAFF REPORT PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Recreation Services Manager, Corey Clark, will give a staff report and an update on the City's senior services. This item was heard immediately following NB-8. Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, asked the commission members to review the Heritage Park Senior Facility July Report. He reported that Dr. Sung, a patron at the center, performed the Heimlich maneuver on another patron that was choking during lunch. VI. CHAIRMAN/MEMBER COMMENTS There were no comments presented. VII. SET NEXT MEETING The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on September 21, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers Conference Room of City Hall. VIII. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no comments presented by the public. IX.
