CITY OF HENDERSON SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES September 21, 2016 I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Dan Hyde called the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting to order at 5:30 p.m., at 240 Water Street, Henderson City Hall, in the Council Chambers Conference Room. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Monica Rivera, Administrative Assistant III, confirmed the meeting had been posted in accordance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, Multigenerational Center, Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, and Fire Station No. 86. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no comments presented by the public. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF THE AGENDA (Motion) Ms. McEvers introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Hyde declared the motion carried. V. NEW BUSINESS NB-1 MINUTES AUGUST 17, 2016 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Adopt the minutes of August 17, 2016 meeting. (Motion) Ms. Baldizan introduced a motion to adopt the August 17, 2016, minutes, as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Hyde declared the motion carried. NB-2 ELECTION CHAIRPERSON PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will elect a Chairperson. Fran Smith introduced a motion to elect Dan Hyde as chairman, unanimous. (Motion) Ms. Smith introduced a motion to re-elect Dan Hyde to the office of Chairman. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Hyde declared the motion carried. NB-3 ELECTION VICE CHAIRPERSON PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will elect a Vice Chairperson. Fran Smith introduce a motion to elect JoAnn McEvers as vice chairman, unanimous. (Motion) Ms. Smith introduced a motion to re-elect JoAnn McEvers to the office of Vice Chairperson. NB-4 HENDERSON SENIORS' AUXILIARY PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION A member of the Henderson Seniors' Auxiliary will give the monthly report. Marianne Stanger, Henderson Seniors’ Auxiliary gave a report on the events that are occurring in the month of September. NB-5 AGE-FRIENDLY HENDERSON PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will be provided with an update from the stakeholders meeting. Shelley Labay, Planner, gave a PowerPoint presentation regarding Age-Friendly Henderson. Areas of discussion included: The Purpose of the AARP, AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, and Roles for the Senior Advisory Commission. Discussion ensued regarding the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission’s role in the process. NB-6 MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT EDUCATION PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION David Karel, David Karel Group, will request the support of the Commission to host a Medicare Open Enrollment educational presentation. Commission members will discuss and potentially vote on the issue. David Karel, David Karel Group, gave a presentation and noted that he is seeking the Commission’s verbal support for his presentation at Sun City Macdonald Ranch as well as other upcoming opportunities. A discussion ensued regarding the benefits of Mr. Karel’s presentations. (Motion) Ms. Baldizan introduced a motion to support David Karel giving a Presentation at Sun City Macdonald Ranch, on October 16, 2016. Those voting Aye: Baldizan, Fields, Hyde, McEvers, Mullin, Smith. Those voting Nay: None. Those absent: Flake, Jolliff, Nies, O’Neill. Those abstaining: Berman. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Hyde declared the motion carried. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 4 September 20, 2016 – Minutes NB-7 AGEWELL: THE ACTIVE 50+ EXPO PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will discuss and possibly vote on being involved in the October 15, 2016 AGEWELL: The Active 50+ Expo. Corey Clark, gave a brief update on the AGEWELL EXPO taking place on October 15, 2016, at the Cashman Center. Baldizan moved that the Commission participate in the AGEWELL Expo at the Cashman Center, unanimous. (Motion) Ms. Baldizan introduced a motion that the Commission participate in the AGEWELL Expo at the Cashman Center on October 15, 2016. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Hyde declared the motion carried. NB-8 HENDERSON STRONG DRAFT PLAN REVIEW PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION A representative from the Henderson Strong group will present the Commission with the plan progress. Brittany Markarian, Henderson Strong, gave a PowerPoint presentation and update on Henderson Strong. Areas of discussion included: The Comprehensive Plan, Public Outreach, Phase 2 Outreach, Phase 2 Outreach Results, Stakeholder Groups, Community Engagement, Schools and Education, Healthy Communities, Housing, Transportation, Planning for Implement & Citywide Relevance, Master Transportation Plan Update, Planning for Implementation, Henderson’s Proposed Target Industries, and Public Comment. NB-9 SENIOR TRANSPORTATION PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will provide planning updates on the October 13, 2016 senior transportation forum. Corey Clark gave an update on the Senior Transportation Forum which is taking place on October 13, 2016. Discussion ensued regarding ways to promote the Forum to seniors at various locations. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 5 September 20, 2016 – Minutes NB-10 STAFF REPORT PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Recreation Services Manager, Corey Clark, will give a staff report and an update on the City's senior services. Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, gave a brief staff report and gave an update on the City’s senior services. It was noted that the future reports will be emailed to the Commission members and future staff reports will only include the monthly numbers for the Meals on Wheels program. VI. CHAIRMAN/MEMBER COMMENTS There were no comments presented. VII. SET NEXT MEETING The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on October 19, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers Conference Room of City Hall. VIII. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no comments presented by the public. IX.
