CITY OF HENDERSON SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION DRAFT MINUTES August 16, 2017 I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Liz Baldizan called the meeting to order at 5:33 p.m., at the City of Henderson, City Hall Council Chambers Conference Room, 240 Water Street, Henderson, Nevada 89015. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL The Board Secretary confirmed the Regular Meeting had been noticed in compliance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the Agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, the Multigenerational Center, the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, Fire Station No. 86, the Nevada Public Notice Website, the City of Henderson Website, and by emailing a copy of the Agenda to everyone appearing thereon on the Agenda Master Mailing List. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA (For Possible Action) The Commissioners reviewed the Agenda as presented. (MOTION) Ms. McEvers introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Baldizan declared the motion carried. V. NEW BUSINESS NB-1 COMMISSION MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Members of the Commission will informally speak about their background and connection to senior citizens, including any particular area of interest that they currently have regarding seniors. Commission members briefly introduced themselves and provided their background information regarding seniors. NB-2 PRESENTATION SPRING MOUNTAIN TREATMENT CENTER PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION A member of Spring Mountain Treatment Center will give a presentation on clinical depression, bipolar and mood disorders. This item was continued due to a member of Spring Mountain Treatment Center not being in attendance. NB-3 PRESENTATION HENDERSON SENIORS' AUXILIARY PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION A member of the Henderson Seniors' Auxiliary will give their monthly report on activities of the organization. Sue Wojcik, Senior Auxiliary, provided information on two fundraisers for September. If anyone wanted to donate new or gently used donations they could be dropped off at Heritage Park Senior Facility Mini Mart up until September 11, 2017. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 3 of 5 Wednesday, August 16, 2017 – Minutes NB-4 SENIOR CITIZENS RELOCATION SUPPORT PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commissioner Francine Fields will lead a discussion on accessibility of community resources to assist low income seniors when they are in a situation where they need to relocate. This item was continued due to Francine Fields not being in attendance. NB-5 MINUTES SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISISON MEETING JULY 19, 2017 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting minutes of July 19, 2017 (MOTION) Mr. Flake introduced a motion to adopt the minutes of July 19. 2017, as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Baldizan declared the motion carried. NB-6 PARTICIPATE IN THE AGEWELL ACTIVE 50+ EXPO PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and take possible action to decide whether the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission wishes to participate in the AgeWell Expo on October 14, 2017 at Cashman Center. If approved determine what the scope of the commission’s participation will be and designate a commission member to facilitate the commission’s participation, including registration for the event. A discussion ensued regarding commission participation in the AgeWell Expo. No action was taken. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 4 of 5 Wednesday, August 16, 2017 – Minutes NB-7 STAFF REPORT PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Recreation Manager, Corey Clark, will give an update on the Meals on Wheels program and on the City's senior services. Corey Clark provided an update on senior services which include:  Fall classes will be starting this month.  Mayor March’s March On meeting will be held at Heritage Park Senior Facility on September 21, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.  Community Conversations will be held on September 13, 2017, at Heritage Park Senior Facility at 9:30 a.m. to talk to patrons using the facility, and have dialogue with patrons on events and concerns.  Reviewed the Meals on Wheels report. VI. CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS Chairman Baldizan asked Commissioners for agenda items for next month’s meeting.  Chairman Baldizan would like to have, “Clarify roles and responsibilities on subcommittees” as well as, “Proposal to revise bylaws”.  Ms. Smith would like to have “Potential outreach events through the end of year; city and others”.  Mr. O’Neil would like to have Visiting Angels speak about the program.  Mr. Berman would like to discuss the commission’s function as “advisory.” Ms. Smith suggested a commissioner attend Mayor March’s March On meetings. Chairman Baldizan recognized Joyce Nies and Gina Jolliff for being reappointed. She also congratulated Jordan Flake for his news article in Vegas, Inc. which was published on August 14, 2017. This news article was passed around. VII. PUBLIC COMMENT David Karel of David Karel Group, a healthcare company, commented about the importance of being visible in the community, and that the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission should be at Mayor March’s March On Meeting on September 21, 2017, as well as upcoming health fairs to best serve the community. IX.
