CITY OF HENDERSON SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, November 8, 2023 I. CALL TO ORDER Chair Joanna Gerali called the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission meeting to order at 4:00 p.m., at the Heritage Park Senior Facility, 300 South Racetrack Road, Henderson, Nevada 89015. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Karie Teruya, Executive Administrative Assistant, confirmed the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission meeting had been noticed in compliance with the Nevada Open Meeting Law. PRESENT: Chair Joanna Gerali Steve Boyce Ed Long David Tulanian Favil West Audrey Woods ABSENT: Judy Belanger Roop Raich Delwin Potter STAFF: Corey Clark, Parks and Recreation Manager Bethany Sanchez, Assistant City Attorney III Karie Teruya, Executive Administrative Assistant III. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments presented. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA (For Possible Action) (Motion) Commissioner Audrey Woods introduced a motion to accept the agenda, as presented. The roll call vote favoring passage was: Those voting aye: Chair Joanna Gerali, Steve Boyce, Ed Long, David Tulanian, Favil West, Audrey Woods. Those voting nay: None. NEW BUSINESS 1 MINUTES SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING OCTOBER 11, 2023 PARKS AND RECREATION Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting minutes of October 11, 2023. (Motion) Commissioner Steve Boyce introduced a motion to adopt the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting minutes of October 11, 2023, as presented. The roll call vote favoring passage was: Those voting aye: Chair Joanna Gerali, Steve Boyce, Ed Long, David Tulanian, Favil West, Audrey Woods. Those voting nay: None. Those absent: Judy Belanger, Roop Raich, Delwin Potter. Those abstaining: None. Chair Joanna Gerali declared the motion carried. 2 FRATERNAL ORDER OF THE EAGLES GUEST SPEAKER SUSAN BEAN PARKS AND RECREATION Susan Bean, Trustee for the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, will introduce the commission to the Fraternal Order of the Eagles non-profit organization and the services the organization provides. Susan Bean will also provide an overview of the Annual Senior Thanksgiving Dinner Event held by the Fraternal Order of the Eagles on November 18, 2023. Susan Bean, Trustee for the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, introduced herself and briefed the Commission on what the organization does for the senior community. She stated the Fraternal Order of the Eagles is a 501c3 organization and is located at 310 West Pacific Avenue at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Van Wagenen Street. Ms. Bean advised that the organization will be providing turkey dinners to over 400 seniors for the 54th Annual Senior Thanksgiving Meal on November 18, 2023. Ms. Bean handed out information on ways to donate or volunteer for the Thanksgiving Meal which has been included in the agenda packet. Ms. Bean also handed out information regarding how to become a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Commissioner Ed Long provided information regarding the Honor Flight Pancake Breakfast fundraiser. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting Page 3 of 5 Wednesday, November 8, 2023 - Minutes Commissioner Joanna Gerali asked about how to properly dispose of a tattered American flag. Ms. Bean advised a tattered American flag could be taken to Elks Lodge in Boulder City. Commissioner Steve Boyce inquired if there would be transportation available for seniors to attend the annual event. Ms. Bean advised that the organization would provide transportation to some of the senior homes but will not be offering a delivery meals service. 3 SENIOR AUXILLARY PRESENTATION PARKS AND RECREATION Henderson Senior Auxiliary provided a report of the activities of the organization. A representative from the Henderson Senior Auxiliary was not present; therefore, this item was not heard. 4 AUTHORIZE PARTICIPATION BY SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MEMBERS AT UPCOMING EVENTS FROM NOVEMBER 9, 2023, TO DECEMBER 12, 2023. PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will discuss and approve whether Commissioners may officially attend or participate in upcoming community programs or events as a representative of the Commission for November 9, 2023, to December 12, 2023. Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, presented a summary of this item and provided information on the different upcoming events. (Motion) Commissioner Audrey Woods introduced a motion to accept the calendar of events, as presented, supporting the interest of any Commissioners to attend any of the upcoming events from November 9, 2023, to December 12, 2023. The roll call vote favoring passage was: Those voting aye: Chair Joanna Gerali, Steve Boyce, Ed Long, David Tulanian, Favil West, Audrey Woods. Those voting nay: None. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting Page 4 of 5 Wednesday, November 8, 2023 - Minutes 5 APPROVE THE CANCELLATION OR A CHANGE IN TIME AND LOCATION FOR THE DECEMBER 13, 2023 SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will select one of the following options for the December 13, 2023, Commission Meeting: Cancel the December 13, 2023 Meeting, change the location from Heritage Park Senior Facility to the Henderson Multigenerational Center and the time from 4:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., or keep the original meeting time and location. Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, presented a summary of this item and presented the above-mentioned options for the December 13, 2023, Senior Citizen Advisory Commission Meeting. (Motion) Commissioner Favil West introduced a motion to cancel the December 13, 2023, Senior Citizen Advisory Commission Meeting. The roll call vote favoring passage was: Those voting aye: Chair Joanna Gerali, Steve Boyce, David Tulanian, Favil West, Audrey Woods. Those voting nay: Ed Long. Those absent: Judy Belanger, Roop Raich, Delwin Potter. Chair Joanna Gerali declared the motion carried. 6 STAFF REPORT PARKS AND RECREATION Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, will give an update on recent events at the Heritage Park Senior Facility and the Downtown Senior Center. Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, presented a summary of this item and discussed the following events:  The Heritage Harvest Festival had about 2,000 people in attendance and offered a train, crafts, and kid’s games. The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission also had a booth at the Heritage Harvest Festival.  Heritage Park Senior Facility will be hosting a Thanksgiving meal on November 22, 2023, and will begin seating at 10:30 a.m. Staff are expecting around 600 attendees for the event.  The Downtown Senior Center will be hosting a Thanksgiving meal on November 22, 2023, and will begin seating at 11:00 a.m. Staff are expecting around 300-400 attendees for the event. CHAIRMAN\COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Audrey Woods provided positive feedback for the Heritage Harvest Festival. Commissioner Ed Long proposed that staff add a discussion item on the January 2024 agenda for the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meetings to move from 4:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Commissioner Favil West expressed disappointment that the Veteran’s Day Event at City Hall was held on November 5th at 11:00 a.m. instead of on the actual day of November 11th. Commissioner David Tulanian expressed positive feedback on the senior lunches provided by the Heritage Park Senior Facility. Chair Joanna Gerali Joanna advised while at the Heritage Harvest Festival, she spoke to Mayor Michelle Romero and offered the services of the Commission. Commissioner Ed Long advised that the Eagles Pancake Fundraiser for veterans. 8am to 1 pm for Honor Flight of Southern NV. It’s an important fundraiser as they raise money to send veterans to Washington DC. VII. SET NEXT MEETING The next meeting was set for Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. VIII. PUBLIC COMMENT Anita Gant, 89110, strongly encouraged the Commission to attend one of the thanksgiving meals at Heritage Park Senior Facility or Downtown Senior Center. IX.
