CITY OF HENDERSONVILLE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY BOARD Operations Center - Assembly Room | 305 Williams St. | Hendersonville NC 28792 Thursday, March 16, 2023 – 3:00 PM MINUTES 1. CALL TO ORDER A. Call to Order- Ann Twiggs, Vice Chairperson 3:05 Start. Geri is absent. All other members are present. APPROVAL OF AGENDA 2. Approval of Agenda- Ann Twiggs, Vice Chairperson Ann suggested to create 7C- Discussion of Sustainability hero award, Move 6D and 6C to be updates under 5C, and to move 7B to be under old business B. Beth moved to accept all agenda changes. Will 2nd it. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 3. Public Comment - Allotted Time 15 minutes Botanist William Coffee spoke on the importance of invasive plant management in regards to native tree health. 1207 Pinebrook Cir. Hendersonville, NC 28739, (480) 688-7366, treecityrewild@gmail.com SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATES 5. Bee City- Will Garvey, Board Member Annual Report has been submitted on behalf of Bullington Gardens 6. Recycling and Plastics- Geri Conley, Board Member Absent 7. Hendo Earth Fest- Ann Twiggs, Vice Chairperson Extend a Courtesy Invitation to County and Local Municipal Offices to Join the ESB and Hendos Earth Fest. Want to repurpose billboard afterwards if possible. HEF needs volunteers, email city employees to see if there is interest. Have them email Virginia Teagel. 8. Sustainability Plan - Will Garvey, Board Member No update- waiting on SM 9. City Council - Lyndsey Simpson, Council Woman We are creating our own new flood maps. Want to ask fema to update theres with our new ones. Council has a top priority of creating a parks and rec department - disc golf, tree canopy map (10 years old) and now we have a new one to compare/contrast. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY BOARD – March 16, 2023 Page | 2 new bike racks around town OLD BUSINESS 10. Mayors Monarch Pledge (Due by March 31st 2023) - Will Garvey Board Member i. Please review and select your commitment choices before the meeting ii. https://www.nwf.org/~/media/PDFs/Garden-for-Wildlike/Mayors -Monarch-Pledge_Action- Items.pdf Will proposed we select three action items from the mayors monarch If we are to sign again, need to do so before April 12th Decided on the items 1, 8 Already doing 1, 10, and 22 11. Fountain Works Board Retreat Proposal- Ann Twiggs, Vice Chairperson Hold Discussion on who they want to work with and put it to a vote between Fountain works and the other recommended consultants. Voted to use FW. Mary Ellen moved to use FW for may 28th retreat. Will abstained, Lyndsey Abstained. Gracie abstained. Marcia, Ann, Virginia, Grady, and Beth all voted yes 12. Update on Sustainability Manager Position- Gracie Erwin, Staff Liaison NEW BUSINESS 13. Ecusta Trail Update - Will Garvey, Board Member Discuss ESB commenting on issues such as landscaping? ESB to provide feedback on management list for ecusta trail. volunteers to help manage trail? Will proposes we take this list and review to discuss deeper at next meeting ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY BOARD – March 16, 2023 Page | 3 14. Suggestions for Board Retreat Consultants- Grady Nance, Board Member 15. Discussion of Sustainability Hero Award -Will Garvey, Board member CLOSED SESSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY HERO AWARD 16. Closed Session for Sustainability Hero Award- Will Garvey Will moved them to go into closed session, Mary Ellen second it, everyone else agreed. " I move that we go into closed session as allowed by NCGS Section 143-318.11(a)(2) to prevent premature disclosure of an honorary degree, scholarship, prize, or similar award " closed session begain at 4:20 Gracie left as to not be a part of closed session. City Attorney Angela Beeker was present to ensure legal compliance.
