CITY OF HENDERSONVILLE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY BOARD Operations Center – Second Floor Conference Room | 305 Williams St. | Hendersonville, NC 28792 Tuesday, May 12, 2026 – 4:30 PM MINUTES 1. CALL TO ORDER Meeting called to order at 4:45pm Present: Gina Baxter; City Council, Kasey Lyons; Staff Liaison, Linda Zietlow, Ron Zietlow (non-members) Emily Davidson, Kimberly Blackwell, Virginia Tegel, Joey Burnett (members) 2. EnterTextHere APPROVAL OF AGENDA Public Comment added to agenda. Emily motioned to approve, Kim seconded. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Vote to approve April 2026 meeting minutes Emily motioned to approve, Virginia seconded. PUBLIC COMMENT: Linda Suggested installing Chimney Swift Towers in the City. Suggested funding could be through the Mud Creek Restoration Project or Blue Ridge Audubon Society. BUSINESS 2. Review and vote on quote for Lower Mudd Creek Edible Forest Educational Sign - Follow up on Virginia's question - Synthetic pesticides and herbicides are not used on stream restoration projects unless in uncommon applications to address invasive species. Virginia Made a movement to accept the current sign, all present members voted yay; signage was approved. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY BOARD – May 12, 2026 Page | 1 3. Supporting Strive Not To Drive Week - Virginia Tegel, Member Note: the City is hosting the Bike to Work Day which Emily and Joey volunteered to help out at. Sustainability Demonstration Station - Virginia Tegel, Member monthly schedule to check site monthly schedule of activity at Farmers Mkt process to prepare and set up at Farmers Mkt second stolen battery - do we continue to include solar? Compost bin order update - board member link to view updates: CompostProgramImpact.xlsx Volunteer sign up sheet is available to water SDS frequently. A second battery has been stolen, leading to a need for increased security. Kasey will continue tracking the compost bins purchased by community members. 5. Consider partnership with Bike/Walk/HVL - Virginia Tegel, Member Kasey will look into rules for partnership. 6. Develop plan to recruit and retain ESB members - Virginia Tegel, Member Provide new members with notebook including Handbook for members Note - City leadership has been meeting on refining process of new board members and there should be an update on the new protocol in the next few months. Also with the notebook for new members also consider refining onboarding meeting/protocol. Considering placing flyers in local areas to increase involvement. Increase tracking of community involvement in public events. Consider placing ads in local news outlets and radio stations. Using public events such as Rhythm & Brews, HVL PrideFest, ect. as outreach opportunities. Kasey will reach out to Communications Department about paid social media posts. Goal: Fill the Board by August. 7. Hendo Earth Fest feedback - Emily Davidson, Chair ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY BOARD – May 12, 2026 Page | 2 Overall the event went well. Organization of EarthFest should start sooner in the year, ideally by September. Caregivers of Mother Earth may be unavailable next year. 8. Consideration of meeting time - Emily Davidson, Chair Meeting time is adequate, Kasey will look for the brochure holder for City Ops. ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 5:54pm.
