Community Clean-U p Day
The date has been set for April 6, 2024. Need to determine who is going to be there and when. Debbie
and Michele will work at the sign-in desk. We will need two people at the equipment table to hand out
vests, gloves, trash bags and grabbers. Shaunna has signed up for one time slot. Frank will work at the
maps desk. Robert Cox and others will help where needed.
Rock Castle - Kathy did not get confirmation until April 3, 2024 that they want us to help with the
cleanup. This is the Sumner Health Committee's cleanup. We are helping them. Our cleanup has the
most participation; but we must abide by their regulations. Also, we are working with TOOT and are
restricted by what we can and cannot do. We must stay on public rights-of-way and no private
properties. We can't cleanup on SR-386 because it is too dangerous. No media will be present at the
cleanup. A group from St. Timothy's Lutheran Church will be cleaning up. Also, the Beta Club from
Hawkins School will clean up the Lock 3 area. ServPro has donated 600 bags for the cleanup. Kathy will
pick them up.
Robert said we need to make sure we have the correct number of people in each area and they know
where to park. We need more locations since a lot has already been cleaned up throughout the city by
different organizations. Frank suggested sending people to the Arboretum since it is not on the list.
This will be a busy weekend for the Parks Department. All the parks will be in use for different athletic
events this coming weekend. The Parks Department has done a good job of keeping them clean.
Beautification Awards
The BOMA Meeting is April 23, 2024. We need to have the selections made and presented by April 15,
r 2024. The business that has been selected is Goldie's Salon . Kathy explained the process to Chris Evans.
Greg Yandell, owner of ACE Hardware, has agreed to donate gift cards again this year for the winners.
Bridge and Gazebo - Pressure Wash, Paint
TDOT owns the bridge. There is no problem with us cleaning and pressure washing the bridge. We will
have to get approval from them to paint it. There are codes to follow and a certain kind of paint. Kathy
asked Rob to get pricing (see attached sheet) for the bridge cleanup. Kathy asked Mr. Walls if he could
pressure wash the gazebo as well as the bridge. She hasn't heard back from him.
Kathy met with Andy Gilley. He said Parks has a pressure washer and they can take care of it if Mr. Walls
is going to charge. He said we could paint the gazebo; but it stays underwater and in need of repair.
Trevor said that the Parks Department has a guy we can work with on the landscaping. He will go over
and see what kind of repairs need to be done on the gazebo. Kathy asked Andy if the Parks Department
could pay for the paint. It is on hold to paint the bridge until we hear from TDOT.
Rob was called to speak with the group via ZOOM about the bridge wall and gazebo painting. Kathy
spoke with the lady over Friendship Committee. She said they have nothing to do with the gazebo. This
was put there in remembrance of the Sister City visit several years ago under a different mayor. The
railroad ties on the walkway are messed up. Trevor said we will need to talk to Andy because he is not
sure about what we can do. Dallas doesn't think Andy will want to do anything about the walkway.
Replacing the railroad ties may be okay.
We still plan to meet on May 1, 2024 and need to coordinate what we plan to do. Kathy will get with
everyone when she sees what can be done.
Other Agenda Items:
Treasurer's Re port
As of February 29, 2024 we had a balance of $9,595.23. Michele tallied what was turned in for March
plus $1,600 requested for the artist for a total of $4,800 for the cans. The total turned in was $6,917
leaving a balance of $2,677. So far this year, we have spent $12,724.30.
There was a mid-year allocation of $12,500 designated for electrical expenses at the bridge. For
projects, we will need to get written estimates to submit for the budget that is coming up. Alderman
Garza shared that on some of the big projects, other committees may share some of the cost.
Artsy Trash Cans
Kathy talked to Andy Gilley on March 8, 2024. He doesn't want the trash cans at the volleyball side of
the road. Kathy talked to several businesses about placing one at their place of business. All except one
were receptive. Greg at ACE Hardware didn't want one placed there because people would be bringing
their trash from home, etc. to put in it. Kathy said we may have a "scavenger hunt" contest to see who
can find all the cans and take their picture.
Kathy spoke with Andy on April 3, 2024. He has decided he wants to have 15-20 decorated cans in the
Parks. He said we must go through the Parks Board, submit drawings and have everything approved.
Trevor said we could submit the photos of the cans for them .
The decorated cans will be displayed at the Community Clean-Up Day and then taken around and placed
at the businesses that have requested them.
Banners
Kathy discussed putting pictures of local artists on flags and displaying them on the bridge. He loved the
idea. He mentioned to Kathy they may be naming the bridge to honor the Oak Ridge Boys.
