WAR BONNET ROUNDUP RODEO ADVISORY COMMITTEE Thursday, July 7, 2022 Recreation Center 11:00 a.m. Members in Attendance: D. Marshall, K. Staten, K. Jones, P. Holm, C. Horsley, J. Stephens, R. Buchan, H. Pettingill, B. Cranor, E. Grossarth, B. Robertson, B. Skinner, D. Sorensen, R. Campbell Members not in Attendance: J. Newgard Call to Order K. Jones called the meeting to order at 11:00 am. Approval of Minutes D. Marshall motioned to approve the June 23rd minutes. K. Staten seconded. All in favor. Director Updates – P. Holm • P. Holm introduced our newest advisory committee member Brent Robertson. • P. Holm thanked K. Jones and her family, royalty members, and D. Marshall for their participation in the parade. • He will touch base this week with all our contracted rodeo officials. Chairman/Production – K. Jones • The Fourth of July parade was successful with a huge turnout. • Ely Sharkey will be replacing Lelo Garcia as bullfighter. • Regarding the tribal opening, we will be working on finding some drummers and riders for the tribal opening. Shelby will look for drummers and K. Jones will work with Talon Teton on securing two or three riders. • K. Jones recommends we get a social media expert for rodeo week. • The status of the National Anthem singers was discussed. P. Holm says we have Thursday filled by Heather Hathaway and Friday filled by Councilman Ziel-Dingman. We have 16  submissions for the third night. We will accept submissions until Friday July 8 th and then make the decision on Friday, July 15th. • Status on the 2022 rodeo posters. They need to go to print a.s.a.p. • Wilderness Circuit Sponsorship. Should we remain at $1,000 or add the buckle and increase to $1,500? K. Staten motioned we increase sponsorship to $1,500. D. Marshall seconded. All in favor. • The Good, Bad, Ugly meeting should be scheduled now. After group discussion it was decided we will hold that meeting on Wednesday, August 28th at noon. • Who will be using the walkie-talkies this year? She recommends we check them out at 4:00pm daily from the director’s room. They will need to be checked back in nightly. • Thursday Night Family Night and First Responder’s lineup. K. Jones needs someone to line up sheriff, police, ambulance, etc. to be paraded into arena. P. Holm volunteered to contact the agencies. The lineup will go in just moments before the rodeo opening. • Super fans – K. Jones recommends the super fans be picked from social media. E. Grossarth will handle. • What will be the rake numbers for the barrel racing? B. Robertson motioned we have five rakes, and K. Staten seconded. All in favor. • Discussion on “special guest” night at the rodeo. • K. Jones led discussion on access to the arena for mutton bustin and the calf and lamb scramble. We will make a final decision two weeks from now. J. Stephens will work on locating entrances. • Discussion on EMT’s, massage therapists, horse chiropractors, etc. It was decided to move forward with veterinarian Dr. Jeff and his magna wave, but we will ask contestants on a questionnaire whether these other services would be useful. We will also hand out a list to contestants with these local specialist contact names and numbers in case they need them during the rodeo. Committee Reports Military Affairs/American Legion – B. Skinner No current updates. Hospitality/Sponsorships – K. Staten • Gem State posse is not going to be able to participate. • She has a contact of a lady who will do the Lord’s prayer in sign language while a video of it is being played simultaneously. She is from the tribe and will dress in authentic native dress. • K. Staten reminds the board that the rodeo begins Thursday morning at 9am on August 4th. She will need assistance this year and keys. • The comment card for the contestants will have around four questions and the cards along with sweatshirts will be given to contestants when they check in. • The final hotel matrix was sent to the hotel this week and any changes need to be made now.  • Discussion on how many programs and day sheets to print. It was decided to print 3500 programs and 5500 day sheets but we will first confirm with Tyler Smith on how many he remembers being left over, if any. • K. Staten showed the committee the new I.E. Commercials and posters. • Caterers for the rodeo are still being decided on. • Sponsorship updates: The War Bonnet has received $195,000 in cash, $72,600 in trade thus far. Facilities/Grounds & Security – R. Campbell/J. Stephens • J. Stephens needs confirmation on firework location. P. Holm will reach out to find out how much square footage is needed and whether they can be shot from the stadium roof. Media/Emergency Action Plan – B. Cranor • B. Cranor advises that press releases for Mutton Bustin are being released and social media is being worked on. • He has collected some animal welfare stories to use. • The group known as the Knowsy Neighbors will be doing a feature on the War Bonnet. • He needs contact for the PRCA photographer as the Post Register no longer has one. Youth Rodeo/Family Night – C. Horsley • Mutton Bustin has 35 kids registered right now. The first two sessions are full. • The buckles and trophies have been ordered. • Committee discussion on having a “cash cow” event for kids. • C. Horsley has still not heard from Lori with Champ’s Heart regarding pony rides. Financial Report – D. Sorensen No current updates. Livestock Welfare – B. Robertson • B. Robertson had some question for the committee including: What equipment is he provided and who runs it? He was advised that City staff will run the equipment for him. Do we have a gurney available for calves and steers? It would be helpful if we located one. They can be purchased at Army Surplus. Who are the judges and who is his arena director? B. Robertson was advised that he is the arena director on both ends. Is there an isolation tent for inured animals? When does the stock arrive? • K. Staten advised Brent that she will get him contact info for Bart Stolworthy who will be a valuable resource. • There will be a tour of the facilities and pens for Brent and give him an opportunity to suggest any changes. • Brent will hold an animal welfare rehearsal the week of the rodeo. • K.
