BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY
COUNCIL CHAMBERS-CITY HALL
AUGUST 25, 2020-8:30 A.M.
Roll call was answered by Mayor SuzAnne Handshoe and Chairman Jim Dazey and Board Member Don Gura.
Others present were: Scott Derby, Steve Garbacz- KPC, Mark Schultz, Jeremy McKinley, Lance Waters, Scott
Mosley, Katie Ritchie, Jim Pankop, Ryan Alwine and Cindy Marple.
Pledge of Allegiance
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all in attendance.
Minutes
The minutes of the August 11, 2020 Board of Public Works and Safety meeting were presented for approval.
Board Member Don Gura made a motion to approve the minutes with a second by Mayor SuzAnne Handshoe.
The motion passed 2 ayes-0 nays.
Petitions or Comments
No petitions or comments were heard.
Engineering
City Engineer, Scott Derby, provided a tree update from the previous storm. There are an additional four trees
that have been added to the removal list. The projected cost amount for the trimming and removing of these
damaged trees are $33,799.39.
Fire
Fire Chief, Jeremy McKinley, requested authorization to purchase new leather fire boots from Hoosier Fire
Equipment Inc. in the amount of$16,560.00. This is for 40 pair of boots for the whole department. The monies
for this will come from the rural firefighting account. Board Member Don Gura made a motion to approve with
a second from Mayor SuzAnne Handshoe. The motion passed 2 ayes - 0 nays.
Fire Chief, Jeremy McKinley, requested authorization to give Kody Forker his first wage increase of $500/yr as
he has successfully completed his six month evaluation. Board Member Don Gura made a motion to approve
with a second from Mayor SuzAnne Handshoe. The motion passed 2 ayes - 0 nays.
Police
Chief of Police, Lance Waters, requested authorization to pay Ascension St. Vincent Public Safety Medical in
the amount of $4,013.16. This includes the exams for the new hires and a follow up exam for Officer
Desormeaux to ensure his injured hand had healed properly to release him to active duty status. Board Member
Don Gura made a motion to approve with a second from Mayor SuzAnne Handshoe. The motion passed 2 ayes
-0 nays.
WWTP
Superintendent Mark Shultz requested authorization to extend employee, Allen Deter, vacation time for 30
days. Allen is currently off due to having knee surgery and is set to return back to work the first week in
September. Allen's vacation days are set to expire on September 9, 2020. This extension would give him until
October 9, 2020 to use his vacation days. Board Member Don Gura made a motion to approve with a second
from Mayor SuzAnne Handshoe. The motion passed 2 ayes- 0 nays.
The July Revenue/Expense Report was presented for review.
The July Monthly Activity Report was presented for review.
Superintendent, Mark Schultz, requested authorization to purchase a new 2019 John Deere Excavator in the
amount of $237,000.00 from West Side Tractor Sales in Fort Wayne. The equipment will be acquired by a lease
purchase agreement consisting of four payments of $61,971.85 that will come from the capital improvement
account. Since there are no sewers scheduled to be lined this year the budgeted amount of $125,000 will be used
to make the first and second payment. The remaining two payments will be budgeted in the WWTP annual
capital improvement budget. Board Member Don Gura made a motion to approve with a second from Mayor
SuzAnne Handshoe. The motion passed 2 ayes - 0 nays.
Water
The July Revenue/ Expense Report was presented for review.
Motion to Adjourn
Board Member Don Gura made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Chairman Jim Dazey adjourned the meeting at
9:10 AM.
