Kendallville Park and Recreation Department 211 Iddings StreetKendallville, Indiana 46755 Phone (260)347-1064 KENDALLVILLE PARK AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT BOARD MEETING MINUTES June 8, 2020 6:30pm Present: Kevin Jansen, President; Dave Button; Tom Jansen; Kara Hand; Dennis Nartker; Jim Pankop, Park Director; Dawn McGahen, Recreation Director and Brett Slone, KORC Manager. Also present Brian and Doris Baker, Friend of the Park recipients. Public Comments: Brian and Doris Baker commented on what a great asset the Park is to the community and thanked the Board and Staff. Minutes of the meeting of May 11, 2020 were approved as presented. (T. Jansen/Hand) Claims were reviewed and approved as presented. (Hand/Nartker) Brian and Doris Baker were awarded “Friend of the Park” for their continued support of the Department. They walk in the park daily and instead of just walking, this past spring they took time to pick up trash along the lakeshore. Directors Report: Highlights 1. Reviewed the Appropriation Reports from the Clerk Treasurer for the month of May2020. 2. The Board learned that Pavilion and Youth Center rentals started in June. They had been put on hold due to COVID-19. 3. The Board was informed that the 4th of July festivities for 2020 have been cancelled. 4. The Board was given an update on projects that are underway. Vacation Extension for Brett Slone was approved for 80 hours. (T. Jansen/Nartker) Maintenance Report: Highlights 1. With the State closing playgrounds till further notice we are having difficulty keeping the caution tape and signs up. It has been a daily routine. 2. Worked on cleaning both beaches and added 20 ton of sand to each. 3. Installed Nature Deck signs. 4. Painted Sunset bathrooms. 5. Turned on more winterized water services and completed repairs. 6. Converted florescent lights in Day Camp building to LED. Kendallville Outdoor Recreation Complex Update: Brett reported that since the ball leagues have cancelled this year he is attempting to fill in some of those open times with other play. He also reported that Adult League play will start June 14. Procedures for Tournament play are still being determined at the State level. Projects being completed include; work on all infields, fertilization, over seeding and herbicide application. There are less children this year which was expected with COVID-19. Acceptance of Donations: (Button/Hand) ❖ Bixler Lake Park Gatehouse Flowers o Aubrey & Ginny Ray - valued at $147.53 ❖ Park Bench Repair o Mearl Hawkins - $100.00 Board Input: Dennis asked how the Campground is doing. He was informed that there have been more campers than expected but numbers are down. Dennis also mentioned that he would like to see a representative from the Library Board join the Park Board as that position has been vacant for some time. Dave mentioned that the Tennis Court project is coming along and he is sure it will look great when finished. Tom commented that we could give the KORC sponsor banners more coverage if we put them on our Facebook and entrance sign. The meeting was adjourned at 7:16 pm.
