6. Police Department Camera Presentation
Chief Matt Canfield from the Laconia Police Department discusses how the city will be looking to move
forward with cameras in the future. He discussed that they are still in the research phase and have a
contractor to analyze the city and detail where cameras should be placed and the type of camera used.
Highlighting that any system the city looks to use will be upgradeable and expandable.
The board discusses the current climate downtown and that some business owners feel unsafe and are
worried that they could be burglarized. Chief Canfield highlights that any system they get should have
cameras at some more significant intersections and provide a greater line of sight through the downtown
area. This information should help the PD reduce response times and allow their dispatch to better monitor
the situations as they should have camera feeds with any new system. Business lighting was also
discussed as a way to help combat some of these issues. There was consensus that any camera system
should help serve as a deterrent to theft and vandalism.
Finally, the board discussed homelessness and drug abuse in the downtown area. Members of the board
discussed the change of public bathrooms to be more for business patrons only because of the significant
drug use issues. It was also noted that many residents had seen increased police presence downtown, and
people were pleased.
