CITY OF LACONIA HERITAGE COMMISSION
MAY 9, 2018
MINUTES
I. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m.
II. PRESENT: J. Whitehead (chair), D. Duffy, J. Hoey, M. Boudman, C. Tokarz
ABSENT: M. Haynes
STAFF: D. Wood (recording the meeting)
III. MINUTES: The Minutes of the meeting on April 11, 2018, were reviewed. D. Duffy made a motion to
approve the Minutes (with some minor corrections). M. Hoey seconded the motion, and it was approved
unanimously.
IV. INTRODUCTION OF POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER: J. Whitehead introduced Laurel Briere who
is interested in becoming a member of the Heritage Commission.
V. CITY COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT: None
VI. PLANNING BOARD UPDATE: D. Duffy gave a synopsis of the meeting. There was nothing
pertinent to the Heritage Commission.
VII. REPORT ON LAKEPORT FIRE STATION BROUHAHA: J. Whitehead asked if everyone knew
what was going on with the former Lakeport Fire Station. She also brought in a copy of the article that
appeared in the The Laconia Daily Sun. C. Tokarz said she had noticed equipment had moved into the fire
station area and the next day she saw that demolition had started. She stopped at the location and saw that a
demolition permit had been posted (and had not been brought to the Heritage Commission for approval). C.
Tokarz said that skipping over the Heritage Commission cannot become a precedent.
VIII. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Area Studies/Photography: C. Tokarz said she has the camera and book so on the next cloudy day
they need to go out to take pictures. According to the weather forecast, Sunday looks like the best
day.
B. Property Restoration Recognition: Nothing new to report.
C. St. Joseph’s Church: J. Whitehead said there was nothing new.
IX. OLD BUSINESS:
A. State Preservation activities
1. J. Whitehead said that she had tickets for any members who wanted to see Laura Knoy/NHPR
at the Belknap Mill on May 11, 2018.
2. D. Duffy – Tour of Riverbank House. D. Duffy said she has been communicating with
Andrew and picking dates as Randy Bartlett was away but would be returning this weekend. D. Duffy is
waiting for them to get back to her with potential dates. The purpose of the tour is to see reuse of old buildings.
3. Preservation Day meeting in Center Harbor: J. Whitehead said that this meeting will be
rescheduled and she will let everyone know.
B. 125th Anniversary celebration and other projects: J. Whitehead asked if there was anything new.
She also said maybe some other houses could be included in the walking tour.
C. Historic Structure Directory: C. Tokarz passed out the Historic Structure form and asked
Commissioners to give the form to anyone they knew who owned a historic structure so that they could
fill out the form (narrative and pictures). J. Whitehead will give the form to N. Brown to put in
LACONIA LINKS.
X. Public Comments none -
XI. Adjournment: M. Boudman made a motion to adjourn, which was seconded by M. Hoey. The
meeting was adjourned at 6:03 pm.
