LAFAYETTE PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD
REGULAR MEETING
4:00 pm
13 January 2020
The City of Lafayette Parks and Recreation Board met in regular meeting, January 13, 2020 at
4:00 pm at the Rush Pavilion in Columbian Park.
The meeting was called to order by Park Board President Dave Mecklenburg. The Board
members present were John Ragan, Pat Corey, and Maurie Denney. Parks Superintendent
Claudine Laufman, Parks Director of Operations Jon Miner, and Recording Secretary Carlynn
Smith were present. Parks staff members present were Mike Perry, Neil Dale, Tyler Wade,
Emily Butler, Kurt Wolf, and Samantha Haville.
New Business: Election of Officers for 2020
Upon motion by Pat Corey, seconded by John Ragan, and unanimously carried, Maurie
Denney was elected President.
Upon motion by Maurie Denney, seconded by John Ragan, and unanimously carried, Pat
Corey was elected Vice-President.
Upon motion by Maurie Denney, seconded by Pat Corey, and unanimously carried, John
Ragan was elected Secretary.
Upon motion by Maurie Denney, seconded by Pat Corey, and unanimously carried,
Carlynn Smith was elected Recording Secretary.
Upon motion by Mr. Ragan, seconded by Mr. Mecklenburg, and unanimously carried, minutes of
the December 16, 2019 Park Board meeting were approved.
Upon motion by Ms. Corey, seconded by Mr. Denney, and unanimously carried, claims in the
amount of $473,034.70 were approved.
Superintendent’s Report:
Zoo Director Neil Dale provided an update on the penguin exhibit construction. The
project is still on schedule for completion and housing of the penguins the first part of
March.
Superintendent Laufman reported that work at Crosser Sports Complex should be
completed by the end of January. A mid-April dedication is expected. Jon Miner will be
working with representatives of Lafayette Youth Softball and Lafayette Jeff to coordinate
scheduling. Regarding the Memorial Island and Carousel projects, she indicated that
construction documents for both should be complete soon and ready to go out for bids. In
addition, she added that Maintenance has been working on improvements at the
Clubhouse rental facility as greater use is expected as a result of the Jenks Rest closure.
Director of Operations Miner provided an update on the Loeb project. Welding on the
steel structure continues and inspections are scheduled. Foundation work continues.
Meetings this week will address keying and the color palette.

Marketing Manager Samantha Haville gave an update on the increase in social media
followers of Lafayette Parks and Recreation Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram since
November. Loeb construction updates have generated the most viewing.
McAllister Asst. Director Emily Butler spoke about the 3rd annual Father/Daughter Dance
that will be held on February 15 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Activities include carriage rides, a dj
for dancing, and crafts. Tickets are $40/couple; the McAllister Foundation provides
financial assistance for those who need it.
Seasonal jobs are now posted on the City of Lafayette website. Applications are
completed and submitted on line.
Declaration of Surplus Property:
Upon motion by Mr. Mecklenburg, seconded by Ms. Corey, and unanimously carried,
livestock from the marine tank at the Columbian Park Zoo were declared surplus.

Communications:
Members of the Board welcomed several attendees who are enrolled in Leadership
Lafayette and spoke briefly about the role of the Board and its makeup and answered
questions from the guests.
There being no further business to come before the meeting, on motion by Mr. Ragan, seconded
by Mr. Mecklenburg, and unanimously carried, the meeting adjourned at 4:29 pm.
